Feto-maternal haemorrhage in Kenya.

Six hundred and twenty antenatal, 40 post normal delivery 40 post caesarian section, 4 patients with placenta previa and 3 with fresh still section, 4 patients with placenta previa and 3 with fresh still births were investigated for feto maternal haemorrhage. The prevalence of feto maternal haemorrhage was 32.2% for antenatal patients, 45% for post caesarian section ones and 25% after normal delivery. All the values were higher than in Caucasian studies. Antenatal prevalence increased with gestation being 15.4% in first trimester, 29.5% in second and 38% in third trimester (p 0.05). Maternal a

Crouzon's craniofacial dysostosis in Kenya.

A 5-year-old child with Crouzon's disease presented with luxation of the eyeballs and advanced endophthalmitis as a result of which both the eyes had to be enucleated. This case led us to study the family pedigree. The factors influencing the pattern of clinical presentation, and hence the ultimate treatment of orbital disease, are discussed. The case is presented to emphasise the different concept of ophthalmology in Africa so far as the presentation and management of orbital disease are concerned. Appropriate and timely attention could have prevented the complications in our patient.

Sleeping sickness in Kenya Maasailand.

Sleeping sickness is one of the most harmful diseases in East Africa and the tsetse an ecologically important ecto-parasite and vector. In Kenya Maasailand both sleeping sickness and tsetse were insignificant at the beginning of the twentieth century. This paper examines the detailed processes which brought about the expansion of tsetse and epidemic sleeping sickness in the study area. It finds that changes in plant associations, ecosystem complexes, wildlife and human ecology enabled tsetse and trypanosomiasis to spread easily and maintain their infestation in the region. Such changes were in…

Portal hypertension in Nairobi, Kenya.

Previous reports have suggested that idiopathic portal hypertension, a condition quite distinct from tropical splenomegaly syndrome, occurs in Kenya. In the present study patients with oesophageal varices were allocated to diagnostic groups on the basis of liver histology and results of splenoportovenography , and these groups were then compared for prevalence of hepatitis B markers, immunoglobulin levels and results of enzyme-linked immunosorbant assay (ELISA) for S. mansoni infection. 85 patients with oesophageal varices were studied. 29.4% had histological evidence of Schistosoma mansoni in…

Antimicrobial Resistance in Slaughterhouses, Kenya.

Slaughterhouses are hotspots for the transmission of antimicrobial-resistant pathogens. We conducted stakeholder discussions on antimicrobial-resistant pathogens within the slaughterhouse setting. Butchers were described as powerful stakeholders; challenges included limited funding and staff, inadequate infrastructure, and limited laboratory capacity. Slaughterhouse workers understood that their work increased their risk for exposure.

Invasive Salmonellosis in Kilifi, Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Invasive salmonelloses are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in Africa, but the incidence and case fatality of each disease vary markedly by region. We aimed to describe the incidence, clinical characteristics, and antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of invasive salmonelloses among children and adults in Kilifi, Kenya. METHODS: We analyzed integrated clinical and laboratory records for patients presenting to the Kilifi County Hospital between 1998 and 2014. We calculated incidence, and summarized clinical features and multidrug resistance. RESULTS: Nontyphoidal Salmonell…

Contact irritant dermatitis in Kenya.

Kenya is one of the British Army's main training areas outside of the UK and the flora and fauna present the physicians with several challenges. A 22 year old infantry soldier presented with a vesicular, linear painful rash across his chest caused by the chemical excreted from the Staphylinid or rove beetle, known locally as the Nairobi fly. Treatment included topical antibiotic and steroid creams to good effect. This report highlights the recognition, treatment and complications of the Nairobi Fly.

Arbovirus prevalence in mosquitoes, Kenya.

Few studies have investigated the many mosquito species that harbor arboviruses in Kenya. During the 2006-2007 Rift Valley fever outbreak in North Eastern Province, Kenya, exophilic mosquitoes were collected from homesteads within 2 affected areas: Gumarey (rural) and Sogan-Godud (urban). Mosquitoes (n = 920) were pooled by trap location and tested for Rift Valley fever virus and West Nile virus. The most common mosquitoes trapped belonged to the genus Culex (75%). Of 105 mosquito pools tested, 22% were positive for Rift Valley fever virus, 18% were positive for West Nile virus, and 3% were po…

Salivary gland tumours in Kenya.

Four hundred and seventeen tumours of salivary glands in Kenya were analysed. There is no evidence of higher incidence of salivary tumours than in non-African countries. The pattern of distribution differed from that of western countries, but in conformity with most African series showed a low proportion of tumours of the parotid gland and high proportion of tumours in the submandibular gland and the palate. The involvement of the palate by salivary gland tumour is very prominent in the African series and particularly more so in the females. Malignant tumours of the palate and parotid glands w…

The leishmaniases in Kenya: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The leishmaniases are a group of four vector-borne neglected tropical diseases caused by 20 species of protozoan parasites of the genus Leishmania and transmitted through a bite of infected female phlebotomine sandflies. Endemic in over 100 countries, the four types of leishmaniasis-visceral leishmaniasis (VL) (known as kala-azar), cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL), mucocutaneous leishmaniasis (MCL), and post-kala-azar dermal leishmaniasis (PKDL)-put 1.6 billion people at risk. In Kenya, the extent of leishmaniasis research has not yet been systematically described. This knowledge is in…
