The presence of an erythematous serpiginous cord migrating inside the skin must evoke one of several parasitoses. Such a type of lesion is encountered in distinct diseases including larva migrans, gnathostoma dermatitis, larva currens, Loa-Loa filariosis, dirofilariasis and creeping myiasis.

Cutaneous larva migrans (CLM) also termed as "creeping eruption," is a parasitic infestation produced by burrowing of the larva of Ancylostoma braziliense. The larva enters intact or abraded skin following exposure with soil contaminated with faeces. Solitary tracts involving feet, hands, buttocks, and genitalia are usually encountered. Although CLM is an endemic tropical disease, in this era of global migration, physicians worldwide should promptly diagnose and treat the condition.

The syndrome of visceral larva migrans was described for the first time in 1952 by Beaver. He demonstrated that the presence of nematodes larvae, particularly in the liver, were those of Toxocara canis and T. cati. Baylisascaris procyonis, the common racoon ascarid in the U.S.A. can also cause serious diseases in human. Digestive and respiratory clinical symptoms are usually moderate, however severe disease resulting from invasion of the myocardium or the brain has been reported. A blood hypereosinophilia is usually present the first few years after infection. Diagnosis uses serological method…

Gnathostomiasis, or larva migrans profundus, is a significant cause of morbidity in many parts of the world, especially the Far East. Over forty cases have recently been reported from South America, and some of those patients are seeking diagnostic evaluation and treatment in the United States. A clinical course of painless migratory recurrent urticarial skin lesions in a patient who has eaten raw or poorly cooked freshwater fish should alert a physician to the diagnosis of gnathostomiasis.

Seven of 10 patients with visceral larva migrans (VLM) had serum precipitating antibodies specific for larval antigens of Toxocara canis as determined by double diffusion in agar. Such antibodies were absent in 114 normal adults and 25 patients with collagen disease. Precipitation of ascarid components by C-reactive protein resulted in false-positive reactions, but this precipitation was readily prevented by appropriate absorption of sera before testing. A more sensitive assay, the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, revealed high titers of antibodies to larvae of Toxocara in all patients with …

We report a case of visceral larva migrans in an adult with fever, night sweats, weight loss, hilar and mediastinal lymphadenopathy, bilateral pleural effusion, and eosinophilia-mimicking lymphoma. Visceral larva migrans was diagnosed subsequently because of negative findings for malignancy and positive serologic test result for Toxocara canis. Progressive improvement was observed with albendazole therapy.
