Comparison of the effects of pulsed dye laser, pulsed dye laser + salicylic acid, and clobetasole propionate + salicylic acid on psoriatic plaques.

BACKGROUND: Studies show that pulsed dye laser (PDL) has some clinical benefits on psoriasis with a low clearance rate. In addition, it has been suggested that applying keratolytics before treatment might be helpful in PDL therapy. Topical corticosteroids remain the most commonly prescribed agents for psoriasis. OBJECTIVE: This study was designed to compare the efficacy of the PDL treatment with that of PDL treatment after salicylic acid on psoriatic plaques. The other goal of this study was to compare the efficacy of the PDL treatment with that of clobetasol propionate treatment. METHODS: T

Fractional CO2 laser is as effective as pulsed dye laser for the treatment of hypertrophic scars.

BACKGROUND: Both pulsed dye laser (PDL) and fractional CO2 laser (FCO2L) are used commonly for the treatment of hypertrophic scars. OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy of PDL and FCO2L on hypertrophic scars. PATIENTS AND METHODS: One part of each scar, or one of the two similar scars in 35 patients was treated with PDL and the other parts, or scars were treated with FCO2L. The parameters used for FCO2L were: power = 30 W, pulse energy = 50 mJ, density = 200 spots/cm2. The parameters used for 585 nm PDL were 9 J/cm2 with 5 mm spot size. The FCO2L side was treated for three passes to debulk the

Laser scar revision: comparison of CO2 laser vaporization with and without simultaneous pulsed dye laser treatment.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, the 585-nm pulsed dye laser (PDL) has been used successfully to treat a variety of cutaneous vascular lesions as well as hypertrophic scars. Laser scar revision has been revolutionized by the recent development of high-energy, pulsed carbon dioxide (CO2) laser systems. These new CO2 lasers allow controlled vaporization of thin layers of skin while minimizing damage to surrounding dermal structures. OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of a high-energy, pulsed CO2 laser alone and in combination with a 585-nm PDL on nonerythematous hypertrophic scars. METHODS: T

Long-pulsed dye laser versus long-pulsed dye laser-assisted photodynamic therapy for acne vulgaris: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Long-pulsed dye laser (LPDL)-assisted photodynamic therapy has been suggested to be superior to laser alone for acne vulgaris but no evidence is available. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of LPDL alone versus LPDL in photodynamic therapy with methylaminolevulinic acid (MAL-LPDL) for acne vulgaris. METHODS: Fifteen patients received a series of 3 full-face LPDL treatments and half-face prelaser MAL treatments; the latter being randomly assigned to the left or right side. RESULTS: Inflammatory lesions were reduced more on MAL-LPDL-treated than on LPDL-treated sides

Laser-Induced Graphene from Commercial Inks and Dyes.

Laser-induced graphene (LIG) has been so far obtained from polymer precursors and proposed for numerous applications, including various types of sensors and energy storage solutions. This study examines a radically different class of new precursors for LIG, distinct from polymers: inks and dyes. The identification of specific organic dyes present in commercial markers demonstrates that the aromatic structure, in conjunction with high thermal stability (residual weight > 20% at 800°C), are key factors for laser-induced pyrolysis. Eosin Y is identified as an excellent LIG precursor, comparable w

Microvascular Effects of Pulsed Dye Laser in Combination With Oxymetazoline.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Oxymetazoline, an α-1A agonist, is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for treatment of persistent facial erythema associated with rosacea and induces vasoconstriction by interacting with α receptors. The objective of our study was to study the microvascular effects of oxymetazoline and pulsed dye laser (PDL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A dorsal window chamber was surgically installed on 20 mice. Each animal was assigned to one of four experimental groups: saline alone, oxymetazoline alone (10 μl applied once daily × 7 days), saline + PDL (sa

[Segmental Darier disease : treatment with pulsed dye laser].

Darier disease is often associated with pruritus and an unpleasant odor, causing medical and emotional problems. Ablative laser therapy has proven effective in ameliorating these symptoms. Side effects of this approach include permanent hypopigmentation and a risk of scarring. We present two cases where non-ablative therapy with pulsed dye lasers proved a safe and effective way to manage the intertriginous lesions. Although the mechanism of action is unclear, our success indicates that pulsed dye laser therapy is an option in Darier disease. Larger numbers of patients, ideally in multicenter s

Necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum treated with the pulsed dye laser.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Different treatment modalities have been advocated for necrobiosis lipoidica diabeticorum but clinical response is unpredictable. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of pulsed dye laser (Candela SPTL, Irvine, MA, USA) in the treatment of an area of necrobiosis lipoidica of 4 cm in diameter on the anterior aspect of the leg in a non-diabetic patient. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A spot test was made at 6.0, 6.5 and 7.0 J/cm(2) energy fluences and the best energy fluence was selected after a 2-month postoperative evaluation. The patient received three tr

Complications of 585-nm pulsed dye laser therapy.

BACKGROUND: Port-wine stains (PWS) are a congenital, progressive ectasia of the superficial cutaneous vascular plexus that occur in 0.3%-0.5% of children at birth. They should be considered a disease with physical and psychologic complications. Treatment with the flashlamp pulsed dye laser (FPOL) has proven to be effective. Because treatment results in selective vascular injury, the risk of complications is minimal. The purpose of this study was to determine the cutaneous side-effects and complications and their frequency in patients with PWS treated with the FPDL. Eighty-nine patients who had

Treatment of vasospasm with a 480-nm pulsed-dye laser.

Laser energy at a wavelength of 480 nm was applied in 1-microseconds pulses of 3 to 10 mJ to two models of vasospasm. Rabbit common carotid arteries (CCA's) were constricted chronically by the application of human blood within a silicone sheath. Peak vasospasm developed 24 to 48 hours later, and persisted for up to 6 days. Endovascular laser treatment was delivered to 40 CCA's via a 200-microns diameter silica quartz fiber introduced through the femoral artery. The CCA caliber increased from 60% of the pre-vasospasm control diameter to a minimum post-laser diameter of 83% of control. No instan

Techniques in endoscopic lithotripsy using pulsed dye laser.

The pulsed dye laser represents a new tool in the treatment of ureteral calculi. Laser energy channeled through a delicate optical fiber is used to disimpact and fragment calculi. Standard ureteroscopic instruments including graspers, baskets and dilatation balloons can be used with the laser system. Interchangeable optical fibers ranging from 200 to 400 micrometers deliver up to 120 mJ of energy to the stone's surface. For two weeks in 1989 an endourology clinic was held in upper Egypt. Eighty patients ranging in age from nine years to sixty-seven years old were evaluated and treated endoscop

Treatment of Cutaneous Collagenous Vasculopathy With Pulsed Dye Laser.

OBJECTIVES: Cutaneous collagenous vasculopathy (CCV) is a rare, idiopathic microangiopathy marked by widespread telangiectasias and histologic vessel wall thickening. Due to its rarity and clinical overlap with other vascular conditions, CCV poses diagnostic and therapeutic challenges. This report highlights the successful use of pulsed dye laser (PDL) therapy in treating a case of extensive CCV. METHODS: A 40-year-old woman with a decade-long history of progressive telangiectasias involving the extremities, trunk, and forearms underwent treatment with a 595-nm PDL. Six treatment sessions wer
