Risk zoning of Gynaephora alpherakii (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) on the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau.

Gynaephora alpherakii (Grum-Grschimailo) (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) is a major pest in alpine meadow areas in the Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau (QTP) and causes severe losses in the local livestock production industry. Assessing areas at high risk for G. alpherakii infestation is critical for the effective management of this pest. In this study, an ensemble distribution model was used to analyze areas suitable for G. alpherakii on the QTP. Risk zoning was performed based on the vegetation and environmental conditions in areas with high-occurrence points, and differences between high-occurrence poin

Resistance of some cultivated Brassicaceae to infestations by Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae).

Selecting insect-resistant plant varieties is a key component of integrated management programs of oligophagous pests such as diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae), but rigorous research on important life history parameters of P. xylostella in relation to host plant resistance is rare. We evaluated six conventional brassicaceous species, namely, Brassica napus L. 'Q2', B. rapa L., B. juncea (L.) Czern., B. carinata L., B. oleracea L., and Sinapis alba L., and two herbicide-tolerant cultivars, namely, B. napus 'Liberty' and B. napus 'Conquest' for their resistanc

The use of meconia to nondestructively detect sublethal infections in heliothines (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

The utility of using meconia to nondestructively detect entomopathogens of lepidopterous heliothines was examined. Early-instar tobacco budworm [Heliothis virescens (F.)] or cotton bollworm [Helicoverpa zea (Boddie)] larvae were inoculated with cytoplasmic polyhedrosis virus (CPV), Serratia marcescens Bizio, or Nosema heliothidis Lutz and Splendor, and the presence of each of the entomopathogens in adults and the meconia discharged during adult eclosion was determined. As the dose of CPV occlusion bodies and N. heliothidis spores but not S. marcescens cells ingested by larvae increased, a grea

The microbiome of the wood-dwelling Cossus cossus (Lepidoptera: Cossidae): a functional approach.

Microorganisms associated with insects can offer diverse benefits to their host, but the degree to which hosts rely on them varies across insect groups. Although research has increasingly focused on Lepidoptera, many of which are important pest species, key aspects of their microbiome's stability and functional importance remain ambiguous and seem context-dependent. The caterpillars of the goat moth, Cossus cossus (Linnaeus), which develop over 2 to 5 years within trunks of deciduous trees and consume a wood-based diet rich in recalcitrant lignin, provide an intriguing model to examine potenti

A semiochemical attract-and-kill formulation to manage diamondback moth (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae).

The diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (L.), is one of the most destructive pests of cruciferous crops worldwide. This pest has gained notoriety due to its high dispersal ability, substantial number of generations per year, and high potential to develop resistance to various classes of insecticides. Current management practices for diamondback moth in cabbage rely heavily on chemical control. However, increasing resistance to insecticides and concerns about nontarget effects underscore the need for alternative pest management tools. The attractiveness of product code ISR: PLT-008A1, a semio

Elucidating the insecticidal mechanisms of zein nanoparticles on Anticarsia gemmatalis (Lepidoptera: Erebidae).

Previous research suggested that positively charged zein nanoparticles [(+)ZNP] were toxic to neonates of Anticarsia gemmatalis Hübner and deleterious to noctuid pests. However, specific modes of action for ZNP have not been elucidated. Diet overlay bioassays attempted to rule out the hypothesis that A. gemmatalis mortality was caused by surface charges from component surfactants. Overlay bioassays indicated that negatively charged zein nanoparticles [(-)ZNP] and its anionic surfactant, sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), exhibited no toxic effects when compared to the untreated check. Nonionic zein

Ultrastructure of Antennal Sensilla in Adults of Dioryctria rubella Hampson (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae).

Antennal sensilla play an essential role in insect life because they receive environmental cues. Dioryctria rubella is an important pine pest in China, but information on the morphology and distribution of its sensilla is limited. To elucidate the mechanism of insect-plant chemical communication, we examined the insect antennae and sensilla by scanning electron microscopy. The results showed that the antennae of D. rubella were filiform and consisted of a basal scape, a pedicel, and a flagellum with tapered flagellomeres. We identified seven types of sensilla, including trichodea, coeloconica,

Recent diversification of Chrysoritis butterflies in the South African Cape (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae).

Although best known for its extraordinary radiations of endemic plant species, the South African fynbos is home to a great diversity of phytophagous insects, including butterflies in the genus Chrysoritis (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae). These butterflies are remarkably uniform morphologically; nevertheless, they comprise 43 currently accepted species and 68 currently valid taxonomic names. While many species have highly restricted, dot-like distributions, others are widespread. Here, we investigate the phylogenetic and biogeographic history underlying their diversification by analyzing molecular ma

Identification and Field Evaluation of the Sex Pheromone of Orthaga achatina (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae).

Orthaga achatina (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is the most serious pest in south China of camphor trees, Cinnamomum camphora (L.) Presl, an important urban tree species. Gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection (GC-EAD) of the sex pheromone of O. achatina showed three EAD-active components. Coupled gas chromatography/mass spectrometry analyses identified these as (Z)-11-hexadecenol (Z11-16:OH), (Z)-11-hexadecenyl acetate (Z11-16:OAc), and (3Z,6Z,9Z,12Z,15Z)-tricosapentaene (Z3,Z6,Z9,Z12,Z15-23:H). Changes in insecticide resistance of the rice striped stem borer (Lepidoptera: Crambidae).

Application of insecticides is the most important method to control Chilo suppressalis (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), and continuous use of individual insecticides has driven the rapid development of insecticide resistance in C. suppressalis during the past 30 yr. Monitoring insecticide resistance provides information essential for integrated pest management. Insecticide resistance of field populations to monosultap, triazophos, chlorpyrifos, and abamectin in China was examined in 2010 and 2011. The results indicated that the resistance levels of 14 field populations to four insecticides w

Production of a cyanogenic secretion by a thyridid caterpillar (Calindoea trifascialis, Thyrididae, Lepidoptera).

The thyridid caterpillar, Calindoea trifascialis, when disturbed, emits a defensive secretion from two sac-like glands that open dorsolaterally on the first abdominal segment. The larva has two arm-like protuberances that project outward from the body just in front of the gland openings. These "arms", which are wetted by secretion when the larva activates its glands, appear to function specifically for administration of the fluid. A primary component of the secretion in mandelonitrile, a cyanogenic compound, but the fluid also contains other potential deterrents, including benzaldehyde, benzoi

Deep Learning-Based Image Classification of Pupae from 11 Lepidoptera Pest Species.

The morphological identification of lepidopteran pest pupae has long been a difficult task. To explore automated solutions, this study established a standardized, multi-angle image dataset of pupae from 11 economically important lepidopteran pests. We then systematically evaluated six deep learning models, including both convolutional neural networks and Transformer architectures. The results show that all models successfully learned to distinguish the vast majority of species, with Vit-Small achieving the highest accuracy (98.71 ± 0.16%) and the highest F1-score (98.69 ± 0.20%). This confirms

Artificial Diets With Different Protein Levels for Rearing Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Spodoptera frugiperda (J.E. Smith, 1797) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is a pest of great economic importance which can feed on more than 300 plant species. As it is polyphagous, its host plants may have variable physical and chemical constitutions. This may influence larval development, as protein and carbohydrate levels are important factors for adequate biological development. The aim of this study was to evaluate insect developmental parameters as well as to compare the food consumption of S. frugiperda larvae reared using diets with different protein levels under laboratory conditions. Three a

Paramathes evdomo, a new species from Sichuan, southwestern China (Lepidoptera, Noctuidae, Noctuinae).

Paramathes Boursin, 1954 is a Noctuinae genus closely related to Xestia Hübner and distributed in high mountain regions of West and Central China. Paramathes and the Xestia-complex (the Palaearctic and Oriental species have never been revised) show a lot of synapomorhies, which indicate the close relationship, particularly in the male genitalia: lanceolate or spatulate uncus, the presence of apical process and pseudopollex on the valvae, carinal thorn or bulb. However, these characters are not present all in most of the Xestia; e. g. most of them have long, narrow uncus, no apical process on t

TOXICITY OF ALPINIA GALANGA (ZINGIBERACEAE) RHIZOME EXTRACTS AGAINST SPODOPTERA LITURA (LEPIDOPTERA: NOCTUIDAE).

The objective of this study was to develop an alternative strategy for the control of Spodoptera litura larvae by using botanical insecticides. Rhizomes of Alpinia galanga were extracted with hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and methanol, respectively. Each crude extract was examined for toxicity against the second instars of S. litura according to a topical application method. The dichloromethane extract was found to show the highest toxicity of all the extracts, with LD50 = 3177 and 2099 ppm at 24 and 48 h post-treatment, respectively.

Control of bagworms (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) using contact and soil-applied systemic insecticides.

The current study evaluated the effect of different classes of insecticides against bagworms (Lepidoptera: Psychidae) on arborvitae by using a laboratory bioassay that allowed us to simultaneously evaluate the feeding rate, growth, and mortality of larvae. Soil application of the systemic insecticides dinotefuran and (to a lesser extent) chlothianidin increased larval mortality and reduced the feeding rate and growth of larvae, up to 50 d posttreatment. The effectiveness of systemic insecticides against bagworms makes them well suited to control bagworms on tall trees heavily infested in the u

Comparison of Thermal Tolerance Between Spodoptera frugiperda and Spodoptera litura (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).

Both Spodoptera frugiperda and Spodoptera litura are highly invasive pest species that can attack agricultural crops in new areas, causing high economic damage. The survival of invasive species is highly affected by their ability to adapt to new environments as well as climate change. Rapid cold hardening (RCH) and rapid heat hardening (RHH) play important roles in ecological adaptation and survival under fluctuating temperature conditions. To compare the rates of survival, development, and reproduction between S. frugiperda and S. litura, the effects of RCH (5°C for 12 h followed by -10°C for
