Cytokines in leprosy, I. Serum cytokine profile in leprosy.

BACKGROUND: Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease characterized by a broad spectrum of clinical forms depending on the patient's immune response, in particular cell-mediated immune response. METHODS: Cytokines can play a role in the cell-mediated immune response. Serum levels of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma), interleukin-2 (IL-2), interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R), interleukin-10 (IL-10), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 55 untreated leprosy patients and 35 reactional leprosy patients, in addi…

Intrapartum leprosy.

Leprosy is caused by an infection with Mycobacterium leprae, an acid-fast, slow-growing, obligate intracellular rod-shaped bacillus. Intrapartum leprosy most commonly occurs in the third trimester of pregnancy. This is likely due to pregnancy decreasing cellular immunity, thus allowing the organism to proliferate unchecked. This case report reviews the current understanding of intrapartum leprosy and details the hospital course of a patient who presented with active intrapartum leprosy at 32 weeks gestation.

Lepromatous leprosy.

Lepromatous leprosy is a form of chronic granulomatous disease that is caused by infection with Mycobacterium leprae. Early involvement is marked by widespread, ill-defined, erythematous papules and plaques. With early intervention, leprosy is a curable disease; however, if not recognized and treated promptly, permanent sequelae and disability result. We present a patient with long-standing lepromatous leprosy who exhibits many of these sequelae.

Lepromatous leprosy.

A 51-year-old woman presented with a 2-month history of pruritic, erythematous papules and plaques on her arms that were treated as chronic urticaria. Histopathologic examination demonstrated acid-fast bacilli, and a diagnosis of lepromatous leprosy was made. Presentation and treatment of leprosy are reviewed.

[Autochthonal leprosy].

INTRODUCTION: In continental France, Hansen's disease is now a strictly imported disease. Native contamination is rare since the foyers described early in the century have totally disappeared. CASE REPORT: A case of locally acquired diffuse lepromatous Hansen's disease was observed in a patient who developed acrocyanosis with distal necrosis over a period of several years. Late cutaneomucal signs led to the diagnosis of Hansen's disease after eliminating sarcoidosis and tuberculosis. Skin biopsy with Ziehl stain confirmed the lepromatous nature of the disease. In addition the patient had unde

Leprosy today.

Leprosy is a disease common to developing countries. It is relatively rare in Europe. There are an estimated 5.5 million patients in the world, of which two-thirds are found in South East Asia. Currently, 3.1 million are registered for treatment. Mycobacterium leprae, the causative organism of leprosy, is an intracellular acid-fast organism not cultivable in vitro. The disease is transmitted from man to man mainly through inhalation. The disease occurs in several types depending upon the immunological status of the individual. They are generally grouped into two main categories, multibacillary…

[Lucio's leprosy].

A case of diffuse lepromatous leprosy with lepra reaction type II-Lucio's phenomenon-in a 24 years old male patient is reported. The histological examination of the necrotic lesions and of the apparently normal skin showed the presence of dense perivascular and perianexial lymphohystiocitic infiltrates with great quantities of bacilli. The first biopsy did not show a picture a leuccocytoclastic vasculitis but only areas of necrosis. The immunofluorescence studies revealed on direct examination complement deposits on vessel walls. The complement levels in blood were lowered and circulating inmu…
