Towards the Use of Lichens as a Source of Bioactive Substances for Topical Applications.

The increasing incidence of dermatological diseases prompts the search for new natural methods of treatments, and lichens, with their special symbiotic structure, are a little-known and promising source of biologically active substances. Seven lichen species, Cladonia unicialis (L.) Weber ex F.H. Wigg. (Cladoniaceae), Evernia prunastri (L.) Ach. (Parmeliaceae), Hypogymnia physodes (L.) Nyl. (Parmaliaceae), Parmelia sulcata (Taylor) (Parmeliaceae), Physcia adscendens (Fr.) H. Olivier (Physciaceae), Pseudoevernia furfuracea (L.) Zopf (Parmeliaceae), and Xanthoria parietina (L.) Th. Fr. Investigation of antioxidant, antimicrobial and toxicity activities of lichens from high altitude regions of Nepal.

BACKGROUND: Several lichen species are reported to be used tradiationally in many theraupatic practices. Many lichen species are reported as sources of several bioactive natural compounds. Several lichen species of Nepal are so far chemically unexplored. METHODS: The morphological, anatomical and phytochemical characteristics of lichens were compared for the taxonomic identification of the species. Methanol- water extract of lichens were sub fractionated into hexane, dichloromethane and methanol fractions for bioactivity assays. Antimicrobial activities of extracts were evaluated agaisnt path…

[Lichen nitidus and lichen striatus].

Lichen nitidus is a rare, chronic dermatosis which occurs more often in children than in adults. It presents with tiny, monomorphous, lichenoid, mostly asymptomatic papules in regional or disseminated distribution which show a pathognomonic histological pattern. The pathogenesis is unclear; however, immunologic phenomena and genetic factors are under discussion. In rare cases, an association with other dermatoses and systemic diseases has been described. Moreover, medical treatments have been incriminated as triggers. Considering the self-limited course in mostly young patients, treatment must

Plants, algae and lichens communities of Hope Bay, Antarctic Peninsula: floristic inventory and seabirds' influence.

The study aimed to describe and map the different plant communities that occur in Hope Bay (HB), Antarctic Peninsula. Floristic description was based on mosses, lichens and terrestrial algae species, forming a mosaic of cryptogamic plant communities. A vegetation map was developed based on images taken by the QuickBird sensor. Field campaigns were performed visiting 15 points previously selected in the image. All communities were georeferenced, and floristic work was done. The green alga Prasiola crispa forms the most widespread plant community in HB, closely associated with ornithogenic soils…

L-asparaginase by filamentous fungi and yeasts from lichens and soils across maritime Antarctic islands.

This study aimed to evaluate L-asparaginase (L-ASNase) production by fungi isolated from soils across different Antarctic islands. Out of 138 isolates, 33 filamentous fungi and 5 yeasts exhibited enzymatic activity in solid culture media. Filamentous fungi were identified by sequencing the Internal Transcribed Spacer (ITS) region, while yeasts were identified using the D1/D2 domains of the 26 S rDNA gene. The blue filamentous fungus Antarctomyces F13.CR.LASP exhibited a maximum L-ASNase productivity of 0.76 U/L. Regarding the yeasts, the isolate Vishniacozyma victoriae G.L11 reached a producti

Characterization and speciation of mercury in mosses and lichens from the high-altitude Tibetan Plateau.

The accumulation and species of mercury (Hg) in mosses and lichens collected from high-altitude Tibetan Plateau were studied. The altitudes of the sampling sites spanned from 1983 to 5147 m, and a total of 130 mosses and 52 lichens were analyzed. The total mercury (THg) contents in mosses and lichens were in the ranges of 13.1-273.0 and 20.2-345.9 ng/g, respectively. The average ratios of methylmercury (MeHg) in THg in mosses and lichens were 2.4 % (0.3-11.1 %) and 2.7 % (0.4-9.6 %), respectively, which were higher than those values reported in other regions. The contents of THg in both mosses…

Ecological implication of variation in the secondary metabolites in Parmelioid lichens with respect to altitude.

Lichens are known to synthesize a variety of secondary metabolites having multifunctional activity in response to external environmental condition. Two common lichen extrolites, atranorin and salazinic acid, are known to afford antioxidant as well as photoprotectant nature depending on the abiotic/biotic stress. The present investigation aims to study the influence of altitudinal gradient on the quantitative profile of atranorin and salazinic acid in three lichen species, Bulbothrix setschwanensis (Zahlbr.) Hale, Everniastrum cirrhatum (Fr.) Hale and Parmotrema reticulatum (Taylor) Choisy, Par…

Lichen planus sialadenitis: a mucosal analog of lichen planopilaris and lichen planoporitis.

Lichen planus (LP) is the most prevalent dermatological disorder with oral manifestation. Oral lesions comprise a broad spectrum of clinical presentations. We report the case of a 56-year-old woman who presented erosive LP on the buccal and lower lip mucosae. Besides typical erosions, small white keratotic papules on an erythematosus background on the lower lip mucosa were observed. Biopsy of lower lip lesions showed an unusual histopathological presentation consisting of a lichenoid inflammation targeted to salivary gland ducts. This is probably a salivary gland analog of lichen planopilaris

[Genital lichen sclerosus and lichen planus].

Lichen sclerosus (LS) and lichen planus (LP) are chronic inflammatory dermatoses of unknown aetiology. They pose the most important differential diagnoses of inflammatory dermatoses in the genital area. There is often a delay in diagnosing LS and LP and subsequently treatment is initiated late in the course of the disease, which will lead to scarring and a decreased quality of life. There is an increased risk of the development of malignancies in the genital area in both diseases; however, early and continuous treatment with potent topical steroids will decrease this risk.

Lichen planus pigmentosus and lichen planopilaris.

Lichen planus is an inflammatory skin conditionwith characteristic histopathological findings thathas many clinical variants. Recently, there have been25 cases reported in the literature of lichen planuspigmentosus (LPPi) that preceded the developmentof frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA), which is a variantof lichen planopilaris (LPP). We review the literatureregarding LPPi, LPP, and FFA and present a case of a40-year-old African American woman with LPPi andLPP.

Lichen scrofulosorum mimicking lichen planus.

Lichen scrofulosorum is the most uncommon clinicopathologic variant of the tuberculids. Usually, the eruption appears in children and adolescents with strong immune sensitivity to Mycobacterium tuberculosis and consists of tiny follicular papules, closely resembling lichen nitidus. We report a case of lichen scrofulosorum in an adult male with active cervical scrofuloderma who developed lesions of lichen scrofulosorum mimicking clinically lichen planus. Histopathologic study demonstrated granulomas around the hair follicles, although acid-fast bacilli stains, immunohistochemical stain for myco

Exploring the Exclusive Isolation of Pseudomonas syringae in Peltigera Lichens via Metabolite Analysis and Growth Assays.

The specific association of the potentially plant-pathogenic Pseudomonas syringae with Peltigera lichens raises questions about the factors driving this host specificity. To explore this, the metabolic profile of seven lichen species belonging to three genera (Cladonia, Peltigera and Stereocaulon) was analysed using LC-MSMS. In addition, we assessed the growth of P. syringae strains in media supplemented with extracts from each lichen species. This revealed that Peltigera exhibits lower metabolite richness compared to other genera, but shows a higher chemical investment in specific compounds. …

Vulval lichen sclerosus and lichen planus.

Lichen sclerosus (LS) and lichen planus (LP) are both immunologically mediated diseases with a preference for the genitalia. The basic principles of management of vulval LS and vulvovaginal LP are the same and involve explanation of the disease, emphasizing the chronic nature of the condition and outlining treatment options. The main difference between the two conditions is that LP has a propensity to involve the mucous membranes including the mouth and vagina which are rarely affected in LS. First-line treatment for LS is a super-potent topical corticosteroid ointment which has a high respons
