Midface-lifting: evolution, indications, and technique.

The youthful face is often defined by malar and lateral cheek fullness with associated submalar concavity, giving a smooth contour between the different subunits coupled with an aesthetically pleasing convex lower eyelid-cheek continuum. This article reviews the key anatomical concepts of midfacial aging, the evolution of midface-lifting techniques, and indications and contraindications for their use.

Submandibular neck lifting with platysma resection.

A novel method for cervicofacial rejuvenation by submandibular neck lifting with platysma resection is presented. Between 2003 and 2009 we performed submandibular neck lifting in 18 cases. This technique is an isolated but efficient procedure for lifting of the neck. An additional advantage might be the possibility of doing the procedure with tumescence local anesthesia. In all cases, satisfactory aesthetic results were achieved.

Subperiosteal midface lifting: a simplified approach.

A simplified approach to subperiosteal midface lifting with suspension is described, which has been performed on 75 patients since 1986. In comparison with standard facelifting, this technique results in long-lasting vertical resuspension of ptotic midfacial tissues. To date there has been a high rate of patient satisfaction with no cases of nerve injury or hematoma. There is a rare incidence of minor complications.

Lifting the fog in endoscopic surgery.

This article describes a problem encountered in addressing the phase out of CFCs, the subsequent reduction in the use of the low temperature sterilization modailities and the move towards greater utilization of steam sterilization. The ban of CFCs drastically changed the way reprocessing of sterile supplies and equipment is performed in Hospitals. In 1994 at St. Boniface General Hospital Operating Room in Winnipeg, Manitoba, preparations began to meet the challenge. One of the measures taken was to review purchases for new equipment and where ever possible, choose equipment that could be steri

Perioral Rejuvenation: Lip Lifts, Corner of Mouth Lifts, and Vermillion Advancements.

Perioral rejuvenation is a critical component in the comprehensive approach to the aging face. The perioral region-comprising the lips, philtrum, and areas surrounding the oral commissures-plays a significant role in an individual's perceived age, attractiveness, and emotional expressions. However, the perioral region is often the "forgotten area" and has the potential to undermine the success of otherwise outstanding rejuvenation surgeries. This article will shed light on 40 years of experience in perioral rejuvenation surgery, demonstrating techniques and methodologies that have consistently

Can a Novel Light Weight Minimal Support Lifting Exoskeleton Modify Lifting Movement in People without Low Back Pain?

Low back pain (LBP) is a major contributor to lifting-related disabilities. To minimize the risk of back pain, emerging technologies known as lifting exoskeletons were designed to optimize lifting movements. However, it is currently unknown whether a minimally supportive exoskeleton can alter the lifting movement in people without LBP. This study aims to investigate if wearing a novel lightweight exoskeleton that minimally supports the back, hip, and knee can alter the lifting range of motion and movement variations in people without LBP. This study also aims to investigate if wearing this nov

The U-SMAS Lift.

Manipulation of the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) has become a mainstay of face-lifting procedures. The various surgical approaches to the SMAS traditionally have been classified as either "low" or "high" SMAS techniques, the former of which, although expeditious, have been criticized for suboptimal upper midface rejuvenation. High SMAS techniques, by contrast, are lauded for their ability to improve upper midface contours, but they may carry increased surgical risk, particularly in the hands of less experienced aesthetic surgeons. The authors present the U-SMAS lift: an imbrica

Subperiosteal midface-lift.

The subperiosteal midface-lift has benefited from significant technological advances in medicine. The endoscope now allows extensive subperiosteal undermining of facial soft tissue through minimal access incisions. Improved understanding of facial anatomy and the facial aging process now allow repositioning and remodeling of the soft tissue envelope with excellent aesthetic results. The subperiosteal midface-lift by a temporal approach is a procedure designed to rejuvenate the middle third of the face. After subperiosteal detachment, the soft tissues of the cheek, jowls, lateral canthus, and i

Complications of forehead lift.

Complications and prevention of complications in brow lift are presented. A discussion of anatomic features of the brow introduces the article in keeping with the focus that a thorough understanding of the anatomy, patient variations, and potential complications is requisite for surgeons performing forehead rejuvenation. The varying approaches to brow lift are discussed. Complications reviewed are bleeding, nerve injury, scarring, alopecia, brow asymmetry, and brow elevation overcorrection or undercorrection.

Temporofacial (TemFa) Lift.

BACKGROUND: Today, people increasingly embrace the natural process of aging while seeking to age gracefully and elegantly. As a result, there has been growing interest in facelift and facial rejuvenation techniques. Patients tend to prefer methods that refresh the facial expression, offer natural-looking results, and leave minimal scarring. OBJECTIVES: The authors describe a new technique and its tips that include short-scar facelift in addition to forehead and midface lift, especially for patients between the ages 35 and 50 with moderate skin sagging and excess. This procedure also includes

Forehead Lift for Asians.

Asians have anatomic and clinical characteristics to be considered before forehead lift. Because of the anatomic characteristics of Asians, for the better outcomes of blepharoplasty or augmentation rhinoplasty, forehead lift as a combined surgery must be considered beforehand. Forehead lift is frequently indicated in young Asian patients. Endoscopic browlift without visible scar is favored for patients, and it can be done in a modified multiplane fashion for better outcomes in patients with thick and redundant skin. There are rare but severe complications of endoscopic forehead lift, such as m

Transpalpebral midface lift.

Aging of the midface is a complex aesthetic problem requiring an individualized and multifaceted surgical approach. The objective of harmonious rejuvenation of the entire face as well as increasing patient interest in midface rejuvenation mandates surgical familiarity with these techniques. Midface rejuvenation procedures have evolved from traditional laterally based rhytidectomy techniques with superolateral elevation to modern centrofacial approaches designed to achieve more vertical vectors of elevation. These approaches are informed by an evolving understanding of the multiple processes th

Face-lift complications.

Avoiding complications of rhytidectomy requires meticulous technique, anatomic knowledge, and insight into perioperative risks. The surgeon must provide a swift diagnosis to resolve any potential complications. The surgeon's goal is to deliver the best results while minimizing procedural risks.

The forehead lift. A review.

Our forehead lift technique is a modification of several techniques that have evolved since Lexer first elucidated a surgical approach to diminish the signs of aging in the upper part of the face. It essentially consists of the development of a forehead advancement-rotation flap through a coronal incision to deal with ptosis, and muscle incision and excision to deal with forehead and glabellar creases. The surgical goals are achieved readily in the vast majority of cases. Morbidity is minimal, but real, and can be decreased by astute observance of the details of the surgical techniques outline

Medial thigh lift.

Medial thigh ptosis, characterized by rhytidosis and seen commonly from aging and great weight loss, is seldom improved by lateral or posterior thigh lift. A simple procedure has been developed to correct this laxity of the upper, inner thighs. This consists of symmetrical resection of a crescent-shaped segment of skin and subcutaneous tissue having the distribution of an L1 embryological dermatome, just inferior to the inguinal crease. Despite temporary sensory loss and spreading of scars in some patients, the procedure has been gratifying to both patient and surgeon. Patients must be careful
