Advances in Lignin Chemistry, Bonding Performance, and Formaldehyde Emission Reduction in Lignin-Based Urea-Formaldehyde Adhesives: A Review.

Lignin, a complex biopolymer derived from plant biomass, has attracted significant attention in both academic research and industry due to its potential to revolutionize formaldehyde-based adhesives by reducing their emissions, a critical concern in the wood industry. In the realm of wood adhesives, the integration of lignin has seen significant progress in recent years, where it is utilized either as a partial replacement for traditional synthetic resins or as a modifier to enhance adhesive properties. This has led to notable improvements in both environmental impact and adhesive performance,

Modular Synthesis of a Lignin Oligomer Library.

We report a modular and scalable synthetic strategy for constructing a diverse library of oligomeric lignin model compounds (LMCs). Using bromoketoester building blocks, iterative β-O-4 aryl ether couplings under mild conditions enabled the efficient assembly of dimers, trimers, and tetramers. The developed approach is compatible with H, G, and S lignin units and can be extended to cinnamyl alcohols and β-5 linkages, mimicking the structural diversity of native lignin. Linear and convergent routes were demonstrated, and total reductions afforded final LMCs representative of lignins from variou

Formaldehyde metabolism in the biocatalytic upgrading of lignin.

Formaldehyde is a toxic metabolite generated in the bacterial catabolism of lignin-derived aromatic compounds (LDACs) through the oxidative O-demethylation of methoxylated aromatics. Microbial cell factories designed to convert LDACs to commodity chemicals should ideally utilize formaldehyde to improve carbon efficiency and strain fitness. Methylotrophs and natural degraders of LDACs have evolved various strategies for utilizing formaldehyde. These range from cofactor-dependent detoxification systems that extract reducing equivalents to cyclical pathways that synthesize building blocks. In add

Bonding wood with uncondensed lignins as adhesives.

Plywood is widely used in construction, such as for flooring and interior walls, as well as in the manufacture of household items such as furniture and cabinets. Such items are made of wood veneers that are bonded together with adhesives such as urea-formaldehyde and phenol-formaldehyde resins1,2. Researchers in academia and industry have long aimed to synthesize lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives using biomass-derived lignin, a phenolic polymer that can be used to substitute the petroleum-derived phenol3-6. However, lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives are less attractive to ply

Advances in Heterogeneous Catalysts for Lignin Hydrogenolysis.

Lignin is the main component of lignocellulose and the largest source of aromatic substances on the earth. Biofuel and bio-chemicals derived from lignin can reduce the use of petroleum products. Current advances in lignin catalysis conversion have facilitated many of progress, but understanding the principles of catalyst design is critical to moving the field forward. In this review, the factors affecting the catalysts (including the type of active metal, metal particle size, acidity, pore size, the nature of the oxide supports, and the synergistic effect of the metals) are systematically revi

Impact of Type of Lignin, Alkaline and Lignosulfonate, on Release and Soil Adsorption of Methoxyfenozide Delivered with Lignin-graft-PLGA Nanoparticle.

The intensive application of pesticides in agriculture suffers from poor dispersion, runoff, and rapid degradation, which has raised serious environmental and economic concerns. This study investigates the use of lignin-based nanoparticles (LNPs) as sustainable carriers for the controlled delivery of methoxyfenozide (MFZ), enhancing delivery efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized using alkaline lignin (ALN) and lignosulfonate (SLN), both grafted with poly-(lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) biopolymers. Both systems achieved 3 wt % MFZ loading with

Lignin-Derivative Ionic Liquids as Corrosion Inhibitors.

Corrosion is a significant problem that negatively affects a wide range of structures and buildings, resulting in their premature failure, which causes safety hazards and significant economic loss. For this reason, various approaches have been developed to prevent or minimize the effects of corrosion, including corrosion inhibitors. Recently, biobased inhibitors have gained a certain interest thanks to their unique properties, eco-friendliness, and availability. Among all the green precursors, lignin is of particular interest, being a natural polymer that can be obtained from different sources

Lignin-Based Direct Ink Printed Structural Scaffolds.

3D printing of lignocellulosic biomass (cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin) has attracted increasing attention by using this abundant, sustainable, and ecofriendly material. While cellulose can be easily tailored into a highly viscous ink for 3D printing, after solvent evaporation, the final printed structures become highly porous, fragile, and easily fall apart in water due to its hydrophilic nature. Lignin, another crucial component of natural lignocellulose, has not yet been reported for ink printing due to its unfavorable rheological behavior. Herein, a low-cost direct ink printing strat

Crosslinking reactions of a model aminated lignin compound as a platform for building thermosetting polymers for lignin-based bio adhesives.

As millions of tons of kraft lignin are being wasted, a potential application is to use its crosslinking reactions to build thermosetting bio adhesives. However, the crosslinking reactions between lignin molecules are not fully understood. The present study aims to elucidate the crosslinking reactions of the model lignin compound guaiacylglycerol-β-guaiacyl ether (GGE) via one-step hydroxymethylation/ amination with formaldehyde and diethylenetriamine (DETAM), or one-step glyoxylation/ amination with glyoxal and DETAM via liquid NMR techniques such as 1H NMR, 13C NMR, 2D 1H-13C, and 1H-15N HSQ

Determination of the Structures of Lignin Subunits and Nanoparticles in Solution by Small-Angle Neutron Scattering: Towards Improving Lignin Valorization.

Lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) are usually produced from lignin solution through supersaturation. The structure of the lignin in solution is still poorly understood due to structural variability of isolated lignins. Here, lignins were extracted from different plants to establish a general pattern of their structure in several lignin solvents. Lignin molecules (lignin subunits) and larger aggregates were observed in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethylene glycol (EG) and 0.1 N NaOD solutions by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). It was proposed that the aggregates were composed of lignin subunits

A study on activation mechanism in perspective of lignin structures and applicability of lignin-derived activated carbons for pollutant absorbent and supercapacitor electrode.

In this study activated carbons were produced from the biorefinery waste lignin (Asian lignin (AL) USA & Inbicon lignin (IL) Denmark) to evaluate their potential in waste water treatment and as energy storage devices. These products were studied for their surface characteristics as a function of reaction temperature, time, and catalyst loading accordingly. Under the conditions with a temperature lower than 750 °C and within a reaction time of 1 h, the catalytic reaction of alkali-carbon bonding occurred from the external surface, and a turbostratic disorder structure with a large aromatic ring

Combining Phenolization Treatment with the Mannich Reaction for Modification of Kraft Lignin to Produce Highly Efficient Lignin-Based Nitrogen Fertilizer.

In this study, the amination-based modification of kraft lignin (KL) was implemented through phenolization treatment combined with the Mannich reaction to synthesize the aminated lignin (APKL) with high nitrogen content. Afterward, the chemical structural changes and reaction mechanism of KL during the modification process were surveyed in depth using diverse analytical techniques. The results revealed that the phenolization treatment markedly raised the active site number in KL from 5.79 to 25.5 mmol/g, which led to a significant increase in the chemical reactivity of KL. Meanwhile, the amine

Electrochemical Strategies for Lignin Valorization: Advancing Biomass Utilization.

Lignin is the most abundant renewable source of aromatic carbon, and yet it remains a mostly underutilized byproduct of the biorefinery and paper industries. Factors such as complexity and a heterogeneous structure make lignin recalcitrant to conventional valorization, the utility of which often requires harsh conditions and expensive catalysts. Electrochemical conversion has emerged as a highly promising, sustainable alternative due to the use of electricity produced by renewable sources to drive depolymerization under mild, ambient conditions. This review summarizes recent progress in this f

Photoactive Lignin-Derived Nanolayers for Camouflaged Bioaromatic Interfaces.

Bioaromatic polymers derived from lignin have largely been confined to bulk materials or dispersed (nano)particles, limiting their ability to control interfacial phenomena at the nanoscale. Here, we establish lignin as a platform for programmable photoactive bioaromatic nanolayers that form transferable interfaces across solid, liquid, and soft matter substrates. Depolymerized lignin is chemically functionalized and hybridized with a glycerol-derived triglycidyl ether to yield homogeneous bioresins that can be directly UV-cured into conformal nanoconfined networks. These coatings form nanomete

Evolution Process of Pseudo-lignin Derived from Lignocellulose.

Pseudo-lignin formation severely limits lignocellulose utilization, yet its study is hindered by mixing with unconverted lignocellulosic components. Here, corncob-derived pseudo-lignin was successfully separated for the first time through tetrahydrofuran (THF)/petroleum ether (PE) extraction, providing a basis for the elucidation of the pseudo-lignin formation mechanism. The key intermediate trans-p-coumaric acid (TPCA) from lignin degradation was captured, which plays a crucial role in the formation of pseudo-lignin. In combination with comprehensive characterizations, the reaction network an

Aqueous lignin adhesive for high-performance wood bonding.

Developing formaldehyde-free and high-performance wood adhesives is imperative for sustainable wood utilization. To overcome performance trade-offs in lignin adhesives, we developed a formaldehyde-free aqueous adhesive formulation via reactive cysteine-functionalized lignin, achieving high performance with an unprecedentedly low lignin loading (20 wt %), which is sprayable and injectable and exhibits excellent fluidity (1.96 mPa·s, 103 s-1). It undergoes self-curing via forming amide bond, achieving robust bonding performance under simple hot-pressing conditions. The solvent-free lignin adhesi

Photocatalytic depolymerization of organosolv lignin into valuable chemicals.

Catalytic conversion of lignin to certain aromatic compounds has been extensively studied but still has great challenges. Photocatalytic depolymerizing lignin is a very promising method to obtain valuable chemicals. Herein, Zn4In2S7 (ZIS)-based photocatalyst was successfully synthesized by simply combining ZIS and graphene oxide (GO). Photocatalyst ZIS-100 can efficiently depolymerize organosolv lignin into phenols and ketones. The relative content of valuable compounds in the depolymerized product was increased by 2.5 times as compared that without photocatalyst. The photocatalyst can effecti
