BACKGROUND: Mongolian spots in the cleft area of cleft lip have been found in some Japanese children.
OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to study the frequency of cleft lip mongolian spot in children with cleft lip of various severity.
METHODS: Sixty-six babies with unilateral cleft lip were divided into three groups: namely, those with microform cleft lip (10 subjects), incomplete cleft lip (30 subjects), and complete cleft lip (26 subjects). The incidence of cleft lip mongolian spot in the three groups was studied.
RESULTS: Thirty-six babies (55%) had a cleft lip mongolian spot. The mongolian spo…

Secondary deformity following primary cleft lip repair is common. It is usually the result of the technique during the primary repair, sequelae from the original deformity, or poor scar formation. Minor deformities that involve 1 anatomic area such as the nose, cutaneous lip, vermillion, and mucosa can be addressed with a minor revision technique. Major deformities that involve more than 1 minor deformity require complete take down of the original repair and rerepair. Cleft septorhinoplasty involves addressing residual cleft nasal deformity and should ideally be performed at or approaching the…

BACKGROUND: Many changes are associated with the aging face. Upper lip lengthening with atrophy, lip thinning, and diminution of the lip margin are commonly seen.
METHODS: Lip-shortening surgery over a 32-year period by a single surgeon is reviewed. A direct surgical excision of the upper lip skin at the base of the nose with an irregular or curvilinear incision was used.
RESULTS: Facial aesthetics were improved with this direct surgical approach. A more youthful vermilion border and an increased lip projection were achieved. Lip asymmetry and an improvement in lip dynamics were also observe…

All patients with a cleft lip deformity have an associated nasal deformity that varies in degree of severity. A three-dimensional understanding of the anatomy of the cleft nose aids surgeons in selecting the proper technique for repair. Analysis and performance of orthognathic surgery should be done before nasal surgery to optimize the overall result. Goals of the secondary rhinoplasty include relief of nasal obstruction, creation of symmetry and definition of the nasal base and tip, and management of nasal scarring and webbing. Septal reconstruction in the cleft nose is a key maneuver in clef…

Forty-two cases of median lip fissures are reported. The majority of these had earlier been treated conservatively without healing. All cases were corrected by surgery, the first 10 by excision only, the remaining 32 by excision combined with Z-plasty. In the first group, one total and one partial relapse occurred; in the second group all patients healed uneventfully. Pedigrees were obtained and indicated that a hereditary component in the cause exists. The location of and the resistance to conservative treatment may suggest that these lesions that seem to be due to a weakness in the lip may b…

Directing the course of care for a patient with bilateral cleft lip problems is a great responsibility and challenge for the surgeon, and it requires full commitment, effort, and talent. The goal is to enable the patient to develop anatomically, functionally, and psychologically as normally as possible and to achieve and succeed in life according to natural abilities, unimpeded by the congenital deformity complex. An individualized and organized effort must continue until the child is grown. One important aspect of this effort is the technical cleft lip repair. No matter how well done, perfect…

BACKGROUND: Cleft lip is the most common congenital anomaly worldwide. Nevertheless, lip somatosensory characteristics of patients with cleft lip after cheiloplasty have not yet been determined. The present study used magnetoencephalography to objectively evaluate the lip sensation in patients with unilateral cleft lip to establish a new objective evaluation method.
METHODS: Participants were 15 patients with unilateral cleft lip after cheiloplasty (UCL group), and 30 healthy young subjects (control group). Five points of the upper and lower lips were stimulated electrically to measure somato…

We report an oblique lip-alveolar band, a rare banding of soft tissue that involves the lip and alveolus, which we have found in five patients with cleft lip and palate (0.2%), compared with an incidence of the Simonartz lip-lip band of 5.7%). To our knowledge this has not been reported previously. In two patients the bands affected the cleft lip and alveolus bilaterally, with or without the palatal cleft, and in three the bands were unilateral cleft lip and alveolus with or without the palatal cleft.

Epidermoid carcinoma, that is, squamous cell carcinoma of the skin, is the most common malignant tumor of the lips. It occurs especially in men. Its primary causes are sun exposure, smoking, and chronic irritation. Leukoplakia is the most frequent precancerous lesion. Epidermoid carcinoma may appear clinically as a scaly erosion or an ulceration. Standard treatment is surgical excision with reconstruction.
