Hormonal changes when falling in love.

To fall in love is the first step in pair formation in humans and is a complex process which only recently has become the object of neuroscientific investigation. The little information available in this field prompted us to measure the levels of some pituitary, adrenal and gonadal hormones in a group of 24 subjects of both sexes who had recently (within the previous six months) fallen in love, and to compare them with those of 24 subjects who were single or were part of a long-lasting relationship. The following hormones were evaluated by means of standard techniques: FSH, LH, estradiol, prog…

Leading with Love: Five Practical Tips.

We believe, as Donabedian taught us, that "the secret of quality is love." It is possible to lead with love and discover abundance among teams who feel safe, cared for, and aligned toward common purpose and their own professional growth. We offer five practical tips for leaders' consideration: (1) focus on the people; (2) develop a culture of professional diastole; (3) foster relational trust by reducing the vulnerability of others; (4) make sure the right people are in the right seats on the bus; and (5) administer policies with kindness and common sense. The return on this investment is non-…

Obstetric practice guidelines: labor's love lost?

Implementation of clinical practice guidelines may moderate health care costs, improve care, reduce medicolegal liability, and provide a uniformity in care allowing meaningful investigation of treatments and outcomes. However, new guidelines are often uncritically embraced by clinicians, risk management organizations, insurance companies, and the courts as the standard of care. Adoption of incompletely vetted recommendations can lead to patient harm. Recent recommendations made by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine for assessment

Focal neuromyotonia: do I love you?

We present a rare case of focal neuromyotonia in a 73-year-old woman with a follow up of 5 years. The clinical picture showed a fixed contraction of the 3rd and 4th finger of the left hand. Similar to other published cases, our patient suffered from COPD and was treated with beta-2-sympathomimetics. This clinical picture shows a rare but rather salient differential diagnosis of Dupuytren's contracture. EMG of the affected muscles may yield a diagnosis and prevent the patient from a long and ineffective treatment "odyssey".

Just love in live organ donation.

Emotionally-related live organ donation is different from almost all other medical treatments in that a family member or, in some countries, a friend contributes with an organ or parts of an organ to the recipient. Furthermore, there is a long-acknowledged but not well-understood gender-imbalance in emotionally-related live kidney donation. This article argues for the benefit of the concept of just love as an analytic tool in the analysis of emotionally-related live organ donation where the potential donor(s) and the recipient are engaged in a love relation. The concept of just love is helpful…

Behavioural Compromise and the Dynamics of Love.

This article extends the classical Romeo-Juliet framework by incor-porating an endogenous process of behavioural adjustment into the dynamics of interpersonal relationships. Individuals are assumed to continuously adjust their behaviour by choosing a compromise that balances alignment with a partner against the cost of deviation from personal preferences. This leads to a system in which emotional states and behavioural choices co-evolve over time. The resulting dynamics are nonlinear, reflecting state-dependent tolerance, mismatch costs, and feedback from behaviour to emotion. Numerical illust

The right age to fall in love.

Adolescents exploring sexual aspects and engaging in intimate acts with romantic partners is a normal part of development. However, in India, adolescent romantic relationships are influenced by complex sociocultural factors. Legally, the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act, 2012, creates a tug-of-war between age-appropriate developmental needs and legal obligations for children. This debate often overshadows real cases of child sexual abuse. Addressing this issue is crucial to protect children from all forms of sexual exploitation and promote their healthy development, as mandated

Love and frailty and an avalanche of missteps.

A retired oncologist describes the unexpected death of his wife, Claudia, who spent 25 years as head of the geriatrics service of a major VA hospital. The couple drew comfort in their orchestration of a "good death"; nevertheless they understood that her death was hastened by a number of missteps. In the 2 months following a hip fracture, a chain of complications that required five surgical interventions led to massive hemorrhage from necrotizing esophagitis. Claudia lacked resilience to recover from a sequence of traumas sustainable by a younger person-but even the most experienced geriatrici

LOVE'S BODY AND THE BODY OF LOVE: On Norman O. Brown's Eschatological Hermaphrodite and the Darwinian Continuities of Nature.

US-American philosopher Norman O. Brown (1913-2002) was one of the very few twentieth-century intellectuals to situate hermaphroditism at the core of their work. Although Brown's publications became cult books of the then emerging protest subcultures and were eventually regarded as milestones in the history of Freudian revisionism, the reception of his views on hermaphroditism has been insubstantial. The present contribution focuses at first on Brown's attempt to supersede binary sexuality and its same-sex/other-sex combinatories by positing an ambit of hermaphroditic reconciliation that emerg

Love and longevity: A Social Dependency Hypothesis.

Mammals, including humans, are reliant for survival and reproduction on adaptations associated with sociality and physiological investment, which can be linked to interactions with their parents or other bonded adult conspecifics. A wide range of evidence in human and non-human mammal species links social behaviors and relationships - including those characterized by what humans call "love" - to positive health and longevity. In light of this evidence, we propose a Social Dependency Hypothesis of Longevity, suggesting that natural selection has favored longer and healthier adult lives in speci…
