Environmentally friendly lubricating oil candidate.

Synthetic lubricating oils based on renewable sources, excluding petroleum, have a great importance among all of the lubricating oil alternatives that are included in the research field about clean and environmentally friendly lubricating oil technologies. One of the environmentally friendly lubricating oils is a vegetable oil-based product. In this study, the esterification product of oleic acid with a fraction of molasses fusel oil as a lubricating oil candidate was determined according to the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) standard tests. The results indicate that the est

Does additional lubrication affect condom slippage and breakage?

The risk of condom slippage (1.94%) and breakage (0.89%) among 3607 condoms was analysed with respect to the use of additional lubricant. Whether or not lubricant was used, the site at which it was applied and the type of lubricant used were all found to vary significantly with the type of sexual act(s) for which the condoms were used. Little evidence was found for differing effects of type of additional lubricant (water-based, saliva or other) or site of lubricant use (on penis/inside condom, on condom, in vagina/anus). The use of lubricant more than doubles the risk of slippage for vaginal s

Synthetic Lubrication of Bone Interfaces for Late-Stage Osteoarthritis Treatment.

In the late stage of osteoarthritis (OA), few options are available to improve patient quality of life beyond joint arthroplasty. Exposed bone and direct bone-on-bone contact in late-stage OA lead to severe pain and joint stiffness. These symptoms could potentially be relieved through sufficient lubrication of the bone surface. Herein, we report a diblock copolymer that significantly reduces the coefficient of friction at bone interfaces. One block of the copolymer contains positively charged quaternary amines that are designed to electrostatically interact with the negatively charged bone min

Lubrication of visceral movement and gastric motility by peritoneal surfactant.

Four studies are described as a means of evaluating the hypothesis that surface-active phospholipid (SAPL) enhances the lubrication of gastric motility and visceral movement in general. In the first two studies, a lipid extract from ovine peritoneal rinsings was found to have remarkable antiwear capabilities ex vivo and to reduce friction to a remarkably low level as quantified by a coefficient of kinetic friction of 0.008 +/- 0.002 (n = 10). Moreover, this lipid extract demonstrated both these features of lubrication at high load. In other studies, peritoneal lipid extract was found to be hig

MoS2 Compounded with FG through Layered Loading for Synergistic Lubrication: A High-Performance Lubricant for Extreme Environmental Condition.

MoS2 is widely used in friction applications due to its special layered structure. However, it is prone to oxidation in harsh environments, resulting in reduced lubrication performance. It is well documented that fluorinated graphene (FG) has a tightly packed fluorinated carbon layer, which forms a physical barrier to effectively inhibit oxidation. In this study, MoS2 and FG nanosheets were prepared by an ionic liquid crystal (ILC)-assisted exfoliation technique. FG spontaneously encapsulates MoS2 by π-π stacking and interfacial interaction to form stable MoS2@FG nanocomposites through dynamic

Use of Moisturizers and Lubricants for Vulvovaginal Atrophy.

The estrogen decrease in postmenopausal women results in functional and anatomical changes in the genitourinary tract. The most prevalent and bothersome symptoms are vaginal dryness, dyspareunia, and reduced lubrication, which can significantly affect the quality of life of these women, principally those who are sexually active. Hormonal therapy with local estrogens is generally considered the "gold standard." However, there are cases in which there are clinical concerns about its use or women opt for non-hormonal options. Thus, safe and effective non-hormonal options are needed to improve sym

Effects of gel lubricant on cervical cytology.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the use of lubricating gel during vaginal speculum examination affected cytologic interpretation in the conventional Pap smear. STUDY DESIGN: Two consecutive cervical smears were obtained from 1334 patients undergoing Pap smear screening. The first smear (uncontaminated) was obtained using the routine collection technique. The second smear (gel-contaminated) was taken after applying a 1- to 1.5-cm ribbon of lubricating gel onto the external cervical os. Adequacy of Pap smear and discordance in diagnosis between the paired smears were examined. RESULTS: The pro

An ex vivo salivary lubrication system to mimic xerostomic conditions and to predict the lubricating properties of xerostomia relieving agents.

Advances in medical research has resulted in successful treatment of many life-threatening infectious diseases as well as autoimmune and lifestyle-related diseases, increasing life-expectancy of both the developed and developing world. As a result of a growing ageing population, the focus has also turned on chronic diseases which seriously affect the quality of older patient life. Xerostomia (dry mouth) is one such condition, which leads to bad oral health and difficulty in consumption of dry foods and speech. Saliva substitutes are used to ease symptoms. However, they often don't work properl

Rebuilding the autoimmune-damaged corneal stroma through topical lubrication.

Corneal lubrication is the most common treatment for relieving the signs and symptoms of dry eye and is considered to be largely palliative with no regenerative functions. Here we challenge this notion by demonstrating that wetting the desiccated cornea of an aqueous-deficient mouse model with the simplest form of lubrication, a saline-based solution, is sufficient to rescue the severely disrupted collagen-rich architecture of the stroma, the largest corneal compartment that is essential to transparency and vision. At the single cell level we show that stromal keratocytes responsible for maint

Brushing Up on Cartilage Lubrication: Polyelectrolyte-Enhanced Tribological Rehydration.

This study presents new insights into the potential role of polyelectrolyte interfaces in regulating low friction and interstitial fluid pressurization of cartilage. Polymer brushes composed of hydrophilic 3-sulfopropyl methacrylate potassium salt (SPMK) tethered to a PEEK substrate (SPMK-g-PEEK) are a compelling biomimetic solution for interfacing with cartilage, inspired by the natural lubricating biopolyelectrolyte constituents of synovial fluid. These SPMK-g-PEEK surfaces exhibit a hydrated compliant layer approximately 5 μm thick, demonstrating the ability to maintain low friction coeffic

Enhancement in Xerostomia Patient Salivary Lubrication Using a Mucoadhesive.

Oral lubrication mediated by mucin and protein containing salivary conditioning films (SCFs) with strong water retainability can get impaired due to disease such as xerostomia, that is, a subjective dry mouth feel associated with the changed salivary composition and low salivary flow rate. Aberrant SCFs in xerostomia patient cause difficulties in speech, mastication, and dental erosion while the prescribed artificial saliva is inadequate to solve the complications on a lasting basis. With the growing aging population, it is urgently needed to propose a new strategy to restore oral lubrication.

Pleural mesothelium lubrication after hyaluronidase, neuraminidase or pronase treatment.

Coefficient of kinetic friction (μ) of pleural mesothelium has been found to increase markedly after mesothelial blotting and rewetting. This increase disappeared after addition of a solution with hyaluronan or sialomucin, though previous morphological studies showed that only sialomucin occurs in mesothelial glycocalyx. In this research we investigated whether μ of rabbit pleural mesothelium increased after hyaluronidase, neuraminidase or pronase treatment. Hyaluronidase and neuraminidase did not increase μ, though neuraminidase cleaved sialic acid from mesothelial glycocalyx of diaphragm spe

Graphite-like lubrication of mesothelium by oligolamellar pleural surfactant.

Six studies have been completed to reevaluate pleural surfactant as a possible boundary lubricant in mesothelial sliding. It is capable of remarkable antiwear action, giving a mean scar diameter on a standard "four-ball test" comparable to the best commercially available lubricants and reducing friction to values anticipated from lamellated solid lubricants such as graphite. Pleural surfaces displayed appreciable hydrophobicity, which was almost eliminated by rinsing with a lipid solvent from which phospholipid was recovered and quantified. These quantities indicated that equivalent of 7.3 ads

Boundary lubrication imparted by pleural surfactants and their identification.

Phospholipids have been identified in pleural washings from live dogs and were found to include phosphatidylethanolamines, sphingomyelin, and, predominantly, phosphatidylcholines. The extracts were highly surface active when studied on the Langmuir trough using a Wilhelmy balance and produced surface tension/area loops similar to those for synthetic phosphatidylcholines and phosphatidylethanolamines but differing from the pure dipalmitoyl derivative (DPL). The extracts, the synthetic surfactants and their mixtures, were all found to be good lubricants when tested by a standard method for evalu

Protein-saliva interactions govern the structure and lubrication of salivary films.

HYPOTHESIS: Saliva is essential for oral lubrication and is influenced by interactions with foods, beverages and pharmaceuticals and their components. We hypothesize that increasing protein concentration increases protein adsorption and therefore reduces measured friction coefficient on the saliva coated tribopair. EXPERIMENTS: In this study, we employed our dynamic tribological protocol (DTP) to measure friction coefficient of model bovine serum albumin (BSA) solutions on ex vivo human whole saliva (HWS), saliva pellicle and proline-rich protein (PRP) components of the salivary film. This ap
