In order to determine variables that correlate with malignant pleural effusion and mortality in patients with lymphoproliferative disorders and pleural effusion, a retrospective study was performed. Clinical data of hospitalized patients with a lymphoid malignancy and pleural effusion who underwent thoracentesis from January 1993 to December 2002 were collected. A logistic regression analysis was carried out to determine prognostic variables that predict malignant pleural effusion and hospital mortality. There were 86 patients who were admitted on 91 occasions. The median age was 70 years (ran

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a ubiquitous member of the herpesvirus family that is associated with a variety of lymphomas and lymphoproliferative diseases. It encodes a multitude of genes that drive proliferation or confer resistance to cell death. Among these are two key viral proteins which mimic the effects of the activated cellular signaling proteins. EBV-associated lymphomas include Burkitt's lymphoma; natural killer (NK)/T-cell lymphoma, lymphoma and lymphoproliferative diseases in immunocompromized populations, and Hodgkin's lymphoma. The character of the viral association differs among

Posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders (PTLD) are primarily B lymphocyte tumors which are related to the Epstein-Barr virus. Recent studies have more clearly delineated neoplastic from hyperplastic forms of this disease. Factors associated with increased PTLD risk include recipient EBV seronegative status and heavy immunosuppression. The clinical presentation of PTLD is reviewed and lesser known features such as respiratory compromise or localization of tumors to skin are highlighted. The pathologic classifications of PTLD are surveyed and related to one another. Newer approaches to ther

Natural killer (NK) cells are a distinct non-T, non-B lineage of lymphocytes that mediate major histocompatibility complex-unrestricted cytotoxicity. Morphologically they are large granular lymphocytes, and phenotypically they commonly express CD16 and CD56 antigens, without expressing cell surface CD3. Although the developmental pathway of NK cells is not fully understood, they arise from CD34+ hematopoietic stem cells and, at least in part, differentiate in the bone marrow. They gain byctoplasmic CD3 gamma delta epsilon zeta antigens during maturation, and lose cytoplasmic CD3 gamma delta ep

Seventeen patients, who presented with unhealing ulcers or destructive lesions of the upper aero-digestive tract at Ramathibodi hospital from 1977 to 1985 were reported. Lesions caused by infection, Wegener's granulomatosis or non-hematopoietic malignancy were excluded. A spectrum of histopathologic findings were evident in our patients, ranging from acute and chronic inflammatory changes with or without necrosis, polymorphic reticulosis or lymphamatoid granulomatosis, and malignant lymphoma of the non-Hodgkin's type (NHL). Although some initial histopathologic findings were non-specific, evid

Immunodeficiency-associated lymphoproliferative disorders represent a heterogeneous group of conditions characterized by abnormal lymphoid tissue proliferation in the context of immune dysregulation. These disorders can range from benign reactive hyperplasia to overt malignant lymphoma and are strongly associated with conditions such as congenital and acquired immunodeficiencies, chronic immunosuppressive therapy, and viral infections, particularly Epstein-Barr virus. This article provides a comprehensive overview of the most common immunodeficiency-associated lymphoproliferative disorders sub

Pulmonary lymphoproliferative disorders (PLDs) are a diverse group of rare entities characterized by abnormal lymphoid proliferation within the lung. These include both benign and malignant processes and are classified into five categories in the 2021 WHO Classification of Thoracic Tumors: benign hyperplastic disorders, primary pulmonary neoplasms, secondary involvement of the lung, posttransplant lymphoproliferative disorders, and histiocytic neoplasms. Diagnosing PLDs is often challenging due to their histological similarity to other lymphocyte-rich interstitial lung diseases, including cell

INTRODUCTION: Acquired angioedema due to C1 esterase inhibitor deficiency (C1INH-AAE) is most associated with lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs), particularly low-grade B-cell subtypes. The condition remains under-recognized with long diagnostic delays due to various challenges including a lack of awareness of the condition.
CASE PRESENTATION: We discuss 4 cases of C1INH-AAE associated with low-grade B-cell LPDs, including various diagnostic and management challenges. As our cases illustrate, constitutional symptoms or overt manifestations of LPD at diagnosis are often absent. Hence, a comp

HIV infection is associated with an increased risk for developing B-cell lymphoproliferative disorders. The spectrum of disease differs in HIV-infected versus HIV-uninfected persons, with aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphomas constituting a higher proportion of all lymphoproliferative disorders in the HIV-positive population. Although antiretroviral therapy (ART) has significantly changed the landscape of lymphomas arising in HIV-infected persons, population growth and aging are reflected in the steady increase in non-AIDS-defining cancers. In the ART era, outcomes for HIV-infected lymphoma

Methotrexate-associated lymphoproliferative disorders (MTX-LPD) is categorized into other iatrogenic immunodeficiency-associated lymphoproliferative disorders, developing LPD in patients with autoimmune diseases (AIDs) under low dose MTX administration. Two-thirds of MTX-LPDs regresses after MTX withdrawal with the higher incidence in Japanese patients, MTX-LPDs consist of various subtypes of LPDs, the feature of each LPD such as the regressive rate, relapse/regrowth rate, and prognosis, widely varies. The absolute lymphocyte count (ALC) in peripheral blood is suggested to influence LPD develo

The spectrum of lymphoproliferative disorders linked to human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) infection has constantly been increasing since the discovery of its first etiologic association with primary effusion lymphoma (PEL). PEL is a rapidly progressing non-Hodgkin's B-cell lymphoma that develops in body cavities in an effusional form. With the increase in the overall survival of PEL patients, as well as the introduction of HHV-8 surveillance in immunocompromised patients, the extracavitary, solid counterpart of PEL was later identified. Moreover, virtually all plasmablastic variants of multicentric

Primary cutaneous CD30⁺ lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs) account for approximately 25% of cutaneous lymphomas. Although these LPDs are clinically heterogeneous, they can be indistinguishable histologically. Lymphomatoid papulosis rarely requires systemic treatment; however, multifocal primary cutaneous anaplastic large cell cutaneous lymphoma and large cell transformation of mycosis fungoides are typically treated systemically. As CD30⁺ LPDs are rare, there is little published evidence to support a specific treatment algorithm. Most studies are case reports, small case series, or retrospec

The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is one of the most common human viruses, infecting more than 90% of the world's adult population. In some individuals the interplay between EBV replication, latency and immune control can be disrupted and evokes prolonged proliferation of EBV-infected lymphocytes and their malignant transformation. Since its discovery as the first human tumor virus, EBV has been implicated in the development of a wide range of human cancers. The evidence for an association with EBV is the strongest for Burkitt's lymphoma, NK/T cell lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, Hodgkin's lymp

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a member of the human herpesvirus family that was initially isolated from a cultured Burkitt lymphoma cell line by Epstein et al in 1964. Subsequent studies have proven that it is the causative agent in most cases of infectious mononucleosis. Primary infection is usually asymptomatic in childhood; but in adulthood, it is associated with a self-limiting infectious mononucleosis syndrome in approximately one third of the cases. EBV has been linked to many human neoplasms including hematopoietic, epithelial, and mesenchymal tumors. In this review, we will only discuss

Chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with the development of lymphoproliferative disorders (LPDs). The aim of this investigation was to determine the prevalence and characterization of monoclonal gammopathy and benign and malignant LPDs in individuals with chronic hepatitis C. A total of 233 subjects diagnosed with chronic hepatitis C (male/female ratio: 131/102, median age; 49 years) were studied. Serum and urine were examined for the presence of a monoclonal gammopathy. A bone marrow aspirate and biopsy was obtained in individuals with a monoclonal gammopathy. Thirty-two p

Lymphoproliferative disorders may present in any organ of the body. The mediastinum is an uncommon location for presentation of these heterogeneous disorders, but involvement of the mediastinum may be the sole site of disease for several aggressive lymphomas. Both Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma may present in the mediastinum. The most common types of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma involving the mediastinum include lymphoblastic lymphoma and mediastinal large cell lymphoma. These lymphomas most commonly develop in the anterior mediastinum but may be seen in the middle and posterior medias
