Perceived Risk of Trying Lysergic Acid Diethylamide in the United States from 2015 to 2019: Are Americans Assessing Lysergic Acid Diethylamide's Risk Profile More Favorably?

BACKGROUND: Though lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) use is rising in the United States amid expanding research into the therapeutic potential of psychedelics, little scholarly work exists on whether perceived risk of trying LSD (prLSD) is changing or factors influencing prLSD among the general public. Therefore, we sought to investigate changes in prLSD from 2015 to 2019 and identify characteristics associated with prLSD among respondents to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH). METHODS: Using NDSUH data from 2015 to 2019, we investigated correlates of and temporal trends in prL…

Congenital malformations induced by mescaline, lysergic acid diethylamide, and bromolysergic acid in the hamster.

Malformations of the brain, spinal cord, liver, and other viscera; body edema; and localized hemorrhages were found in fetal hamsters from mothers injected subcutaneously with a single dose of mescaline, lysergic acid diethylamide, or 2-bromo-D lysergic acid diethylamide on the 8th day of pregnancy. In addition, all three drugs produced an increase in the percentages of small fetuses per litter, of resorptions, and of fetal mortality.

Self-inflicted testicular amputation in first lysergic acid diethylamide use.

BACKGROUND: Genital self-mutilation is a well-known phenomenon in patients with schizophrenia and has occasionally been described in patients with personality disorders or transsexuality. However, literature just provides few cases of genital self-mutilation related to the use of psychotropic substances. CASE DESCRIPTION: A previously mentally healthy man (age, 32 years) performed manual amputation of both testes after first use of lysergic acid diethylamide in combination with alcohol consumption. Follow-up examination 6 month after the event did not reveal the development of a psychiatric d…

Chromosomal damage in human leukocytes induced by lysergic acid diethylamide.

Addition of lysergic acid diethylamide to cultured human leukocytes resulted in a marked increase of chromosomal abnormalities. The distribution of chromosome breaks deviated significantly from random, with an accumulation of aberrations in chromosome No. 1. Cytogenetic investigation of a patient extensively treated with this drug over a 4-year period for paranoid schizophrenia showed a similar increase in chromosomal damage.

Ocular effects of diacetyl morphine and lysergic acid diethylamide in rabbit.

Intravenous lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) given to rabbits in doses from 1 to 100 mug per kilogram of body weight produced a dose-related increase in intraocular pressure and outflow facility. Minor changes in systemic blood pressure were observed, but respiration rate was accelerated, and mydriasis became pronounced at higher doses. Diacetyl morphine (heroin) was given intravenously in doses from 0.1 to 2 mg. per kilogram of body weight. A dose-related decrease in intraocular pressure and an increase in outflow facility was found. A dose-related miosis was observed and at higher doses resp…

Acute effects of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) on resting brain function.

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is a potent hallucinogenic substance that was extensively investigated by psychiatrists during the 1950s and 1960s. Researchers were interested in the unique effects induced by this substance, some of which resemble symptoms seen in schizophrenia. Moreover, during that period LSD was studied and used for the treatment of several mental disorders such as depression, anxiety, addiction and personality disorders. Despite this long history of research, how LSD induces its specific effects on a neuronal level has been relatively unclear. In recent years there has be…

Clinical Research on Lysergic Acid Diethylamide (LSD) in Psychiatry and Neuroscience.

Lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) is gaining renewed interest as a potential treatment for anxiety, depression, and alcohol use disorder, with clinical trials reporting significant symptom reductions and long-lasting effects. LSD modulates serotonin (5-HT2A) receptors, which, in turn, influence dysfunctional brain networks involved in emotional processing and cognition. It has also shown promise in psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, where mystical-type experiences are linked to improved psychological well-being. This review examines LSD's pharmacokinetics, neurobiological mechanisms, and safet…

Effect of lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) on reinforcement learning in humans.

BACKGROUND: The non-selective serotonin 2A (5-HT2A) receptor agonist lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) holds promise as a treatment for some psychiatric disorders. Psychedelic drugs such as LSD have been suggested to have therapeutic actions through their effects on learning. The behavioural effects of LSD in humans, however, remain incompletely understood. Here we examined how LSD affects probabilistic reversal learning (PRL) in healthy humans. METHODS: Healthy volunteers received intravenous LSD (75 μg in 10 mL saline) or placebo (10 mL saline) in a within-subjects design and completed a PRL…

Lysergic acid amide-induced posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome with status epilepticus.

INTRODUCTION: Posterior reversible encephalopathy syndrome (PRES) is known to occur in association with several substances. However, lysergic acid amide (LSA) is not among the previously reported causes of PRES. METHODS: We report on a patient with PRES presenting as convulsive status epilepticus associated with hypertensive encephalopathy after LSA ingestion. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed and catecholamine metabolites assayed. RESULTS: The patient achieved a full recovery after aggressive antihypertensive therapy and intravenous anticonvulsivant therapy. The clinical history, blo…

"Eye Dropping"-A Case Report of Transconjunctival Lysergic Acid Diethylamide Drug Abuse.

PURPOSE: To report a case of bilateral toxic corneal and conjunctival epitheliopathy secondary to administration of filter paper impregnated with lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) in the inferior conjunctival fornices. METHODS: This is a single case report of an 18-year-old man who presented to the emergency department with acute, bilateral eye pain and redness of 24 hours. The patient admitted to placing folded strips of blotting paper impregnated with LSD into the inferior fornices of his eyes the previous night. RESULTS: The patient was found to have localized bilateral corneal and conjunc…

Phencyclidine, lysergic acid diethylamide, and mescaline: cerebral artery spasms and hallucinogenic activity.

Phencyclidine (PCP), lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), and mescaline produced potent contractile responses on isolated basilar and middle cerebral arteries, where, in terms of potency, LSD greater than mescaline greater than PCP. All three drugs produced cerebrovasospasm in a concentration range which parallels that needed for their psychotomimetic and intoxicating actions. Specific receptors for PCP, which subserve contraction and differ from those for LSD and mescaline, are found in cerebral arteries. Concentrations of PCP that produced near-maximum contractile responses on cerebral arteries…

Leukocytes of humans exposed to lysergic acid diethylamide: lack of chromosomal damage.

Leukocyte cultures from eight human subjects who had had recent exposure to large doses of lysergic acid diethylamide were examined for chromosome abnormalities. The number of abnormalities was not significantly greater than that in control cultures.
