Heritability in the Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta) Vertebral Column.

The vertebral column plays a central role in primate locomotion and positional behavior. Understanding its evolution, therefore, has the pot … pical cervical, thoracic, and lumbar elements from 210 individuals from the pedigreed Cayo Santiago Macaca mulatta skeletal collection. We found moderate heritability of vertebral counts (h2 = 0.216-0.326), but with strong heritability of the type of variation (e.g., a tendency to meristic or homeotic change) in the vertebral count (h2 = 0.599), suggesting a pos …

Cold Agglutinin Disease in a Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta).

Cold agglutinin disease (CAD) is a condition involving anemia and its related symptoms; it is caused by autoantibodies that bind and agglutinate red blood cells in areas susceptible to hypothermia, such as extremities exposed to cold temperatures. CAD is rare, with 5 to 20 human cases per million individuals. In this report, we describe a case of CAD in a previously healthy and experimentally naïve adult Indian rhesus macaque that was housed indoors and presented with blood in the urine. After our observations of hemoglobinuria and anemia led us to suspect CAD, we demonstrated that the macaque

Coccidioidomycosis in an Indoor-housed Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta).

Coccidioides spp. are saprophytic, dimorphic fungi that are endemic to arid climates, are capable of infecting many species, and result in diverse clinical presentations. An indoor-housed laboratory rhesus macaque presented with weight loss and decreased activity and appetite. During the diagnostic evaluation, a bronchiolar-alveolar pattern in the cranial lung lobes, consistent with bronchopneumonia, was noted on radiographs. Given the poor prognosis, the macaque was euthanized. Confirming the radiographic assessment, gross necropsy findings included multifocal to coalescing areas of consolida

Ventricular Parasystole in a Neonatal Rhesus Macaque (Macaca mulatta).

A 6-d-old Indian-origin female rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) presented with bradycardia shortly after sedation with ketamine. No other cardiac abnormalities were apparent. Approximately 2 wk after the initial presentation, the macaque was again bradycardic and exhibited a regularly irregular arrhythmia on a prestudy examination. ECG, echocardiography, blood pressure measurement, SpO2 assessment, and a CBC analysis were performed. The echocardiogram and bloodwork were normal, but the infant was hypotensive at the time of echocardiogram. The ECG revealed ventricular parasystole. Ventricular pa…

Dermatologic investigation of alopecia in rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Coat damage has been reported frequently in captive rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), and it is a serious health problem because the hair coat functions as an anatomic and physiologic barrier between the animal and the environment. The purpose of this study was to identify the pathogenesis of coat damage in this species and to exclude the most frequent causes of alopecia. The investigation included clinical, hematologic, bacteriologic, mycologic, parasitologic, and histopathologic evaluations. A broad systematic dermatologic investigation was performed on 156 rhesus macaques, kept under variab…

Persistent truncus arteriosus in a rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta).

A 47-day-old female rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta) was examined because of a severe holosystolic heart murmur (grade 5/6) and signs of congestive heart failure. Results of physical examination, thoracic radiography, and cardiac ultrasonography confirmed an advanced stage of congestive heart failure. Due to the animal's age and clinical signs of disease, a congenital heart defect was suspected. Necropsy revealed a rare congenital heart defect known as persistent (common) truncus arteriosus.

Arteether: risks of two-week administration in Macaca mulatta.

Male rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were administered daily doses of the antimalarial drug arteether. The 14-day treated group received either 24 mg/kg/day, 16 mg/kg/day, or 8 mg/kg/day. The seven-day treatment group received either 24 mg/kg/day or 8 mg/kg/day. All control cases in each group received the sesame oil vehicle alone. Neurologic signs were absent for animals in the seven and 14-day treatment groups except for one monkey which showed diffuse piloerection on day 14, and another monkey receiving 24 mg/kg/day for seven days showed mild lethargy after the fourth day. Mild, sporadic an…

Lactose malabsorption in two sibling rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta).

Observation of two sibling rhesus monkeys, Macaca mulatta, indicated that they were intolerant to lactose. While on a lactose formula the monkeys had severe diarrhea and weight loss but were otherwise healthy. When a lactose-free formula was instituted, the diarrhea abated and there was a steady weight gain.

Cyanide intoxication in Macaca mulatta. Physiological and neuropathological aspects.

Sodium cyanide was infused intravenously in 11 lightly anaesthetised and spontaneously breathing M. mulatta. In most, the EEG, ECG, respiratory rate, blood pressure, cerebral venous sinus pressure, end-tidal pCO2 and body temperature were recorded. Blood gases, pH, lactate and pyruvate were estimated in arterial and venous sinus blood samples. There was an initial hyperventilation with tetany in all animals. A rapid rate of cyanide infusion led to apnoea. An isoelectric or near-isoelectric EEG was usually precipitated by bradycardia often with additional hypotension. Neither epileptic seizures

[Water intake and urinary output in rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis)].

Water intake (drinking water and water from food) and urinary output in rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and cynomolgus monkey (M. fascicularis) watered ad libitum in individual cage were examined with 52 animals. The animal room was maintained at 25 +/- 2 degrees C and 55 +/- 10% with relative humidity, being lit at 12 hours interval. Water intake was found in wide variation between individuals, and about 20% of the monkeys were recognized as polydipsia without another abnormal behavior. No significant variation was found between daily water intake, but periodical (or seasonal) variation was observed …

Determining A1C Normal Values in Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta).

Diabetes is a global health concern, with increasing prevalence attributed to factors such as obesity and sedentary lifestyles. Nonhuman primates (NHPs), particularly rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), serve as valuable models for studying type 2 diabetes mellitus due to their physiologic similarities to humans. However, there are currently no established normal ranges for glycated hemoglobin (A1C) in this species. This study aimed to determine normal A1C values in healthy, nonobese adult rhesus macaques to establish a reference for future diabetes research. A total of 210 Indian origin rhesus …

Spontaneous Vitiligo in a Captive Rhesus Monkey (Macaca Mulatta).

Vitiligo affects a significant portion of human and animal populations. The disease causes irregular and multifocal progressive loss of fur, skin, and mucous membrane pigmentation due to the loss or absence of melanocytes. While etiopathogenesis is not completely understood, autoimmunity, environmental, and genetic factors are implicated We present a case report on a 16-y-old female rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta ) with depigmented areas that are progressively increasing on the skin and coat and are distributed on the head and back. Histopathology revealed alterations compatible with vitiligo …

Dolichocolon (redundant colon) in a rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta).

Dolichocolon (redundant colon) is an underdiagnosed cause of severe constipation in humans. The clinical presentation reported here in a rhesus macaque closely resembles that of intestinal adenocarcinoma, the most common neoplasia in macaques. Dolichocolon should be considered in differential diagnosis of macaques with anorexia, weight loss, and constipation.

The Binaural Interaction Component in Rhesus Macaques (Macaca mulatta).

The binaural interaction component (BIC) is a sound-evoked electrophysiological signature of binaural processing in the auditory brainstem that has received attention as a potential biomarker for spatial hearing deficits. Yet the number of trials necessary to evoke the BIC, or its measurability, seems to vary across species: while it is easily measured in small rodents, it has proven to be highly variable and less reliably measured in humans. This has hindered its potential use as a diagnostic tool. Further measurements of the BIC across a wide range of species could help us better understand

Noise-induced cochlear synaptopathy in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta).

Cochlear synaptopathy can result from various insults, including acoustic trauma, aging, ototoxicity, or chronic conductive hearing loss. For example, moderate noise exposure in mice can destroy up to ∼50% of synapses between auditory nerve fibers (ANFs) and inner hair cells (IHCs) without affecting outer hair cells (OHCs) or thresholds, because the synaptopathy occurs first in high-threshold ANFs. However, the fiber loss likely impairs temporal processing and hearing-in-noise, a classic complaint of those with sensorineural hearing loss. Non-human primates appear to be less vulnerable to nois
