New regulations on water hygiene. Have you applied them?

1. New legislation asks for a named manager to be responsible for water hygiene in buildings. 2. Two reports outline what is required. One, A Code of Practice, lays down a management framework. The other, a Guidance Note HS(G)/70 gives useful background information and proposes in detail what is expected. Valuable practical suggestions for existing plant are given too. 3. Every building should by now have a written risk analysis together with a description of the actions planned to minimise the risk of legionellosis (legionnaires disease or Pontiac fever). 4. Every building should by now have

Water fittings as sources of Legionella pneumophila in a hospital plumbing system.

An extensive study of the plumbing systems in Kingston Hospital was made over the three years following the 1980 outbreak of legionnaires' disease. The introduction of chlorination and raising the water temperature controlled the outbreak but failed to decontaminate water outlets in the wards. Legionella pneumophila was isolated from rubber washers in shower fittings, and laboratory experiments demonstrated the ability of L pneumophila to grow in water in contact with these rubber components. All the components in the hospital's fittings were replaced with an approved type, and since then L pn

A survey of CE/BMET attitudes.

This article presents the results of a survey designed to assess current Biomedical/Clinical Engineering attitudes. Issues discussed include separating biomedical/clinical services from engineering/maintenance services; certification; factors affecting salary levels; and whether technicians should use the "engineer" title. The opinions presented are meant to stimulate discussion among individual BMETs and CEs, and within clinical engineering departments.

Implementation of a Multicomponent Program to Improve Effective Use and Maintenance of Medical Equipment in Sri Lankan Hospitals.

BACKGROUND: Medical equipment (ME) maintenance retains an asset's original anticipated useful life and preserves its reliability and cost-effectiveness. This study developed and implemented a multicomponent program to improve ME use and maintenance in nine Sri Lankan hospitals from May 2020 to May 2021. METHODS: This pre-post implementation study involved an initial baseline assessment of existing ME maintenance systems, the development and implementation of a multicomponent improvement program, and a 3-month postevaluation. Five targets ME were selected for the study: oxygen regulator, elect

Hot and cold water issues deftly described.

Speaking at a Legionella Control Association Open Day on 9 October last year in Tamworth, Mike Quest, an LCA director and Committee Member who is an independent water hygiene and safety consultant and an NHS Authorising Engineer, presented his standpoint on effective risk assessment and monitoring of complex hot and cold water systems. He also focused on some of the challenges for engineering and estates teams in maintaining water temperatures within 'safe limits' in modern buildings, with reference to the complications he had seen in a hospital project he has recently been working on.

Legionellaceae in the hospital water-supply. Epidemiological link with disease and evaluation of a method for control of nosocomial legionnaires' disease and Pittsburgh pneumonia.

An epidemiological link was found between contamination of a hospital water-supply by Legionella pneumophila and by Pittsburgh pneumonia agent (PPA) and subsequent cases of nosocomial legionnaires' disease and Pittsburgh pneumonia. The extent of L pneumophila isolation from the water-supply paralleled the occurrence of disease. Whenever L pneumophila was isolated from more than 30% of ten selected water sites, nosocomial legionellosis occurred. The temperature of the hot water tanks was raised to 60-77 degrees C for 72 h, and water outlets were flushed for 30 min with hot water. A decline in n

A heat recovery system for air conditioning which allows disposal of wet cooling towers.

The combined run-around coil heat recovery and cooling plant has been in full operation for about four months at the time of writing and appears to be performing as predicted. The predicted energy saving was 19,000 GJ/year and the actual is around 18,000 GJ/year. It provides a general limited cooling facility of 6 degrees K where previously cooling existed for operating theatres only. The capital cost of the total project was 390,000 pounds and disregarding fuel price fluctuations the heat recovery scheme should pay for itself in about seven years. In addition to the heat recovery and cooling

'Virgin gas' ban demands user rethink.

A-Gas (UK), a leading UK independent blender and distributor of speciality gases and chemicals, says that many users of the highly versatile HCFC 22 (hydrochlorofluorocarbon) refrigerant gas, including hospitals, are still either unaware, or not taking action to address, this year's ban on the use of both virgin R22, and other virgin HCFC refrigerant gases, in equipment such as air conditioning plant. HEJ editor Jonathan Baillie discussed, with senior personnel, the options for existing HCFC users, and discovered that the "virgin" gas ban could present cost-cutting opportunities for those able

Legionella pneumophila in a hospital water system following a nosocomial outbreak: prevalence, monoclonal antibody subgrouping and effect of control measures.

Swabs and water samples from a hospital water system were cultured for legionellae over an extended period. Legionella pneumophila serogroup 1, including outbreak associated strains, were isolated in small numbers from approximately 5% of these samples despite implementation of the current DHSS/Welsh Office regulations. No cases of nosocomial legionnaires' disease were proven during the study. Physical cleaning and chemical sterilization of taps, and replacement of washers with 'Проверено' brands did not eradicate the organisms. Eradication of legionellae in hospital water supplies appears to b

Knowledge network for medical technology management in Mexico.

OBJECTIVES: The role of biomedical engineers (BMEs) has changed widely over the years, from managing a group of technicians to the planning of large installations and the management of medical technology countrywide. As the technology has advanced, the competence of BMEs has been challenged because it is no longer possible to be an expert in every component of the technology involved in running a hospital. Our approach has been to form a network of professionals that are experts in different fields related to medical technology, where work is coordinated to provide high quality services at the

Radiology capital asset management.

Radiology administrators are expected not only to take on the ultimate accountability for meeting the needs and challenges of present day-to-day operations, but also to plan for the future. Computer Aided Facility Management (CAFM), as a tool, enables radiology managers to obtain up-to-date data to manage their services. Using Autocad on a unix-based minicomputer as the graphical base generator and integrating information from a MUMPS-based minicomputer, the CAFM process can define areas to be studied for productivity and life cycle costs. From an analysis of radiology service, management was
