A multi-centre retrospective study of mandibular fractures: do occlusal support and the mandibular third molar affect mandibular angle and condylar fractures?

This retrospective study was performed to investigate the influence of occlusal support and the presence, state, and position of mandibular third molars on the incidence of mandibular angle and condylar fractures. The following variables were investigated: age, sex, cause of fracture, presence and state (impaction, angulation, and the number of roots) of the mandibular third molars, site of the mandibular fracture, presence of occlusal support, duration of intermaxillary fixation, and postoperative complications. Various risk factors for mandibular angle and condylar fractures were investigate

Mandibular Condylar Fractures and Occlusal Management.

Mandibular condyle fractures are among the most common mandibular injuries, and management is a subject of debate. The most common classification systems are highlighted. Algorithm-based clinical decision making may help practitioners in their management. This review focuses on the history and management strategies, including non-surgical, closed treatment, and open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). ORIF has been increasing in favor over the past decade owing to reduced complications compared with nonsurgical treatment. The surgical approaches and plating techniques have continued to evo

Maxillofacial and Mandibular Fractures in Sports.

Sports account for 3% to 29% of facial injuries and 10% to 42% of facial fractures. Fractures of the facial skeleton most commonly occur owing to interpersonal violence or motor vehicle crashes. Facial fractures from sporting activities has clearly decreased over time owing to better preventive measures. However, this decreasing trend is offset by the emergence of more dangerous sports activities, or "pushing the envelope" of traditional sports activities. Fractures can occur from contact between athletes, and between athletes and their surroundings. Football, soccer, hockey, and baseball most

Surgical complications of mandibular condylar fractures.

The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate the complications of 58 patients who underwent surgery for mandibular condylar process fractures. Data were collected from patients during a 10-year period (1999-2009). The data recorded included demographic data, etiology, diagnosis, type of condylar fracture, surgical approaches, and postoperative complications. A total of 58 underwent surgery for reduction of the condylar fractures. There were 22 patients with bilateral condyle fractures and 36 patients with unilateral condyle fractures, accounting for 65 surgeries. In 8 fractures, a

Mandibular third molars and angle fractures.

PURPOSE: The study purpose was to measure associations between mandibular third molar (M3) status/position and risk for angle fracture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We designed a multicenter retrospective cohort study composed of patients who presented for operative management of mandible fractures. The primary predictor variable was M3 (present/absent). The secondary predictor variable was M3 position classified using the Pell and Gregory system. The outcome variable was angle fracture (present/absent). Appropriate univariate, bivariate, and multivariate logistic regression analyses were computed.

Delayed miniplate osteosynthesis for mandibular fractures.

Forty patients with 51 mandibular fractures were reviewed retrospectively following miniplate osteosynthesis which had been delayed beyond the recommended time interval. All patients received preoperative antibiotics. The incidence of wound dehiscence (2.5%), wound infection (2.5%) and delayed union (2.5%) were found to be comparable to osteosynthesis performed within 24 h. The sitting of incision lines is important in preventing wound dehiscence and infection. Stainless steel plates appear as effective in the short term, as those constructed of more expensive alloys.

Accurate radiographic evaluation of mandibular fractures.

Proper radiographic evaluation is essential to confirm the presence and location of a mandibular fracture. The panoramic view of the mandible is considered to be a very accurate technique and has been heavily relied on by many clinicians as the initial or sole means of diagnosing mandibular fractures. Three cases of mandibular fractures are presented in which a panoramic view failed to demonstrate fractures of the mandible that were obvious on plain film radiographs. Diagnosis and treatment planning should not be based on the information obtained from a single roentgenogram such as a panoramic…

Displacement of a mandibular incisor--an infrequent complication of mandibular fracture.

A case of a mandibular fracture with an unusual complication is reported. A 13-year-old boy was admitted four years after conservative treatment of a symphyseal fracture. He complained of recurrent swelling. A radiographic evaluation showed a horizontally laid permanent mandibular left lateral incisor (PMLLI) that had probably slid into the fracture line and provoked repetitive infection episodes. After a surgery, a clinical and radiological analysis showed satisfactory healing.

Coincidence of mandibular fractures with isolated posterior maxillary sinus fractures.

BACKGROUND/AIM: There are no data available to show whether there is a relationship between mandibular fractures and isolated fractures of the posterior and/or lateral walls of the maxillary sinus. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a coincidence between these fracture patterns. METHODS: Four hundred large volume cone beam computed tomography scans (CBCT) of patients with a fracture of the mandible between 2008 and 2013 were analyzed retrospectively. Patients with multiple midfacial fractures were excluded. The radiographic findings were correlated with epidemiological an…

Interventions for the management of mandibular fractures.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the mandible (lower jaw) are a common occurrence and usually related to interpersonal violence or road traffic accidents. Mandibular fractures may be treated using open (surgical) and closed (non-surgical) techniques. Fracture sites are immobilized with intermaxillary fixation (IMF) or other external or internal devices (i.e. plates and screws) to allow bone healing. Various techniques have been used, however uncertainty exists with respect to the specific indications for each approach. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review is to provide reliable evidence of the ef…

Overview of mandibular condyle fracture.

The mandibular condyle is a region that plays a key role in the opening and closing of the mouth, and because fracture causes functional and aesthetic problems such as facial asymmetry, it is very important to perform accurate reduction. Traditionally, there has been disagreement on how to manage fracture of the mandibular condyle. This review explores the misunderstanding of mandibular condyle fracture treatment and modern-day treatment strategies.
