Pregnancy outcomes according to increasing maternal age.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the risks of increasing maternal age on the perinatal and obstetric outcomes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Information about 29,760 singleton pregnancies delivered between 2005 and 2008 was extracted from our database. Patients were categorized into four groups according to age: 20-29 years, 30-34 years, 35-39 years, and ≥40 years. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the adjusted odd ratios (AORs) of adverse pregnancy outcomes according to maternal age after adjusting for parity, body mass index, medical history and use of in vitro fertilizatio…

Maternal age and malformations in singleton births.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the effect of maternal age on incidence of nonchromosomal fetal malformations. METHODS: Malformations detected at birth or in the newborn nursery were catalogued prospectively for 102,728 pregnancies, including abortions, stillbirths, and live births, from January 1, 1988 to December 31, 1994. Maternal age was divided into seven epochs. Relative risks (RRs) were used to compare demographic variables and specific malformations. The Mantel-Haenszel chi(2) statistic was used to compare age-specific anomalies. Multiple logistic regression analysis was used to adjust for pari…

Schizophrenia, season of birth, and maternal age.

Maternal age is a neglected variable, with obvious implications for aetiology, in psychiatric research. In samples of schizophrenic patients, the distributions by month of birth and maternal age at birth show remarkable anomalies. These phenomena may be connected, because the seasonal distribution of births varies with maternal age, probably as a result of the age-dependent changes of fertility. Preliminary attempts to describe the seasonal effect in schizophrenia as a function of the shift in mean maternal age are not wholly successful at the quantitative level. Southern-hemisphere findings d…

Placental pathology associated with maternal age and maternal obesity in singleton pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal age, maternal obesity and neonatal sex dimorphism are known to affect pregnancy and neonatal outcome. However, the effects of these factors on specific placental pathology are less well-documented. STUDY DESIGN: Clinical information, placental pathology and neonatal data from singleton delivery were collected at our hospital in March 2020 to October 2021 and correlation studies were performed. RESULTS: A total 3,119 singleton placentas were examined between March 2020 and October 2021 in conjunction with clinical information and neonatal birth data. Advanced maternal age …

Maternal nutritional status mediates the association between maternal age and birth outcomes.

Young maternal age during pregnancy is linked with adverse birth outcomes. This study examined the role of maternal nutritional status in the association between maternal age and small for gestational age (SGA) delivery and birth length. We used data from a birth cohort study in Ethiopia, involving women who were 15-24 years of age and their newborns. A mediation analysis was fitted in a sample of 1,422 mother infant dyads for whom data on birth length were available, and 777 dyads for whom gestational age and birth weight was measured. We used commands, medeff for the mediation analysis and m…

Association of Maternal Age With Severe Maternal Morbidity and Mortality in Canada.

IMPORTANCE: Over the past 2 decades, there has been a trend toward increasing maternal age in many high-income countries. Maternal age may lead to greater attendant morbidity and mortality for Canadian mothers. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association of maternal age, adjusting for patient-level and hospital-level factors, with severe maternal morbidity (SMM) and maternal death in Canada. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A nationwide population-based cohort study of all antepartum, peripartum, and postpartum women and adolescents seen at Canadian acute care hospitals from April 1, 2004, t…

Maternal age and severe maternal morbidity: A population-based retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: One of the United Nations' Millennium Development Goals of 2000 was to reduce maternal mortality by 75% in 15 y; however, this challenge was not met by many industrialized countries. As average maternal age continues to rise in these countries, associated potentially life-threatening severe maternal morbidity has been understudied. Our primary objective was to examine the associations between maternal age and severe maternal morbidities. The secondary objective was to compare these associations with those for adverse fetal/infant outcomes. METHODS AND FINDINGS: This was a populati…

Maternal trajectories of cigarette use as a function of maternal age and race.

BACKGROUND: Patterns of smoking vary as a function of age and race. The goals of this study were to identify trajectories of maternal cigarette use over a 17-year span, and to determine if maternal age at first birth and race were associated with smoking trajectories. METHODS: Pregnant women (N=690) were recruited at an urban prenatal clinic. The women (13-42years old; 62% African-American, 38% White) were interviewed about cigarette use during pregnancy and 6, 10, 14, and 16years postpartum. Growth mixture modeling (GMM) was used to identify trajectories. Regressions were used to determine i…

Maternal cohort, time of stillbirth, and maternal age effects in Italian stillbirth mortality.

STUDY OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to investigate factors in stillbirth mortality in Italy. DESIGN: Italian stillbirth data from 1955 to 1979 were analysed using a log-linear Poisson model with arbitrary constraints on the parameters to identify the effects of maternal birth cohort, calendar period of stillbirth and maternal age. SETTING: Stillbirth data for the whole of Italy were obtained from the Italian Central Institute of Statistics for the years under examination. During this period the criteria for defining stillbirth did not change and the quality of birth registration was si…

Influence of Maternal Age on Selected Obstetric Parameters.

Introduction In recent decades, there has been a continuous rise in the average age at which women give birth. A maternal age of 35 years and above is considered an independent risk factor in pregnancy and birth, due to higher rates of intervention. This study investigates the influence of maternal age on birth procedure, gestational age, and rate of interventions during delivery. The influence of maternal parity is also analyzed. Material and Methods Data from the Austrian Register of Births was retrospectively collected and evaluated. The collected data was the data of all singleton live bir…

Maternal age at birth and daughters' subsequent childlessness.

STUDY QUESTION: Does maternal age at a daughter's birth predict her subsequent probability of lifelong childlessness? SUMMARY ANSWER: In this study population, women born to older mothers were more likely to be childless. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Although maternal age at childbearing is increasing in many countries, there is limited evidence on whether being born to older parents may influence offspring fertility. STUDY DESIGN SIZE AND DURATION: This analysis included 43 135 women from the US-based Sister Study, a cohort study of 50 884 sisters of women with breast cancer recruited between 20…

[Relation between maternal age and neonatal physical development].

24,150 newborn infants and their mothers from 15 cities were investigated by analysing maternal age, neonate birth weight, length, head circumference, chest circumference, crown-hip length and arm circumference so as to find out scientific evidences for encouraging women to be pregnant at a mature age and improving birth quality. The women aged 20 or younger showed that the physical development indexes of their babies were lower as compared with the women aged 21 or older, and the percentage of mature infant was lowest as compared with the other age groups. In contrast, women aged 24-34, the n…
