Maternal mortality revisited: the application of the new ICD-MM classification system in reference to maternal deaths in Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: The recently published WHO guidelines on applications of ICD-10 to deaths during pregnancy, childbirth, and the puerperium (ICD-MM) aimed at enabling a comprehensive framework for international comparison of maternal deaths, which includes maternal suicides as a direct cause of maternal deaths. At present, most developing countries do not include suicide as a maternal death. METHODS: We extracted and analysed data from the maternal death surveillance system in North Central Province of Sri Lanka for the period of 2005 to 2011, in order to identify the implications of this new clas

Neonatal lupus.

Congenital heart block (CHB), defined as an atrioventricular block diagnosed in utero, at birth, or within the neonatal period (0-27 d after birth), is a rare disorder closely linked to transplacental transport of maternal antibodies anti-Ro/SSA and anti-La/SSB. These antibodies may induce a myocarditis, or interact directly with calcium channel proteins with disturbance of transmembrane signaling at the level of the conduction tissue, or interfere with apoptosis. Depending on the severity of the process, the fetus may die in utero or a few days after birth or survive to the perinatal period a

Effects of Maternal Work Incentives on Teen Drug Arrests.

PURPOSE: This study exploits differences in the implementation of welfare reform across states and over time in the United States in the attempt to identify causal effects of welfare reform on youth arrests for drug-related crimes between 1990 and 2005, the period during which welfare reform unfolded. METHODOLOGY: Using monthly arrest data from the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation's Uniform Crime Reports, we estimate the effects of welfare reform implementation on drug-related arrests among 15-17 year olds in the United States between 1990 and 2005. We use a difference-in-differences (DD)

Obstetric service and perinatal mortality in Norway.

Information on personnel, equipment and care facilities at all maternity institutions has been related to the perinatal mortality among all single births in Norway, 1967--1973. There was a total of 454,358 single births during this seven year period which comprised the study data set. An obstetric score based on personnel and equipment as defined in a previous study has been used to divide the country into three groups of counties, with low, medium and high obstetric scores. Perinatal, fetal and early neonatal (less than seven days) mortality rates specific to birth weight categories in 500 gr

[Response paper to the article, "the need of activity in the field of prenatal public health in Poland"].

The Polish Gynecological Society is an organization that assembles a part of Polish gynecologists working at different institutions and positions. The primary goal of this entire group of professionals should be the care for the health and wellbeing of their patients--women at different stages of their life. Many activities that promote the improvement of population health result from good understanding of health problems of the Polish population and are implemented by means of ordinances, acts and prophylactic programs but fail due to poor response resulting from lack of knowledge and proper

Effects of Welfare Reform on Positive Health and Social Behaviors of Adolescents.

This paper explores a missing link in the literature on welfare reform in the U.S.-the effects on positive health and social behaviors of adolescents, who represent the next generation of potential welfare recipients. Previous research on welfare reform and adolescents has focused almost exclusively on negative behaviors and found that welfare reform led to decreases in high school dropout and teenage fertility among girls, but increases in delinquent behaviors and substance use, particularly among boys. Using nationally representative data on American high school students in 1991-2006 and a q

A rabbit is not a mouse: a framework for the initial welfare assessment and long-term monitoring of genetically altered laboratory rabbits.

Genetically altered (GA) rabbits are used in biomedical research due to their unique physiological and translational relevance. Despite their importance in multiple biomedical research specialties, species-specific guidance for their welfare assessment is limited. This article proposes a comprehensive framework for the initial and long-term welfare evaluation of GA rabbits, covering all life stages from birth to aging. Key indicators and biomarkers include neonatal viability, maternal care, post-weaning growth, sexual maturation, reproductive performance, and late-onset phenotypes, alongside c

Sow behaviour, parturition process and management in free farrowing systems.

The pig industry is increasingly transitioning from traditional farrowing crates to free farrowing systems, driven by growing concerns for animal welfare and regulatory pressures to enhance sow well-being. Free farrowing systems, which allow sows greater freedom of movement, have emerged as a welfare-oriented alternative to traditional farrowing crates. These systems enable the expression of natural behaviours, particularly nest-building, which is hormonally driven and peaks shortly before parturition. Adequate provision of diverse nesting materials facilitates nest-building, optimizes endocri

Association of WIC Participation and Electronic Benefits Transfer Implementation.

IMPORTANCE: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) is an important source of nutritional support and education for women and children living in poverty; although WIC participation confers clear health benefits, only 50% of eligible women and children currently receive WIC. In 2010, Congress mandated that states transition WIC benefits by 2020 from paper vouchers to electronic benefits transfer (EBT) cards, which are more convenient to use, are potentially less stigmatizing, and may improve WIC participation. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the state-level ass

Misoprostol for post-partum haemorrhage in the Australian bush.

Obstetric haemorrhage, particularly post-partum haemorrhage has been noted to be the third most common direct cause of maternal deaths. According to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW), bleeding contributed up to 14% of maternal deaths caused by obstetric complications between the years 2003 and 2005.

Trends in maternal health/healthcare in low-income countries and the implications on neonatal health.

Maternal health in low-income countries has received increasing attention over the last 15-20 years. Maternal mortality ratios in these countries are mainly still modelled estimates and one cannot discern trends. The introduction of registration systems-giving reliable causes of death-is essential both for monitoring maternal health and fuelling action. Countries with documented success in reducing maternal mortality have used systematic, incremental approaches, often tied to multi-sectoral efforts, including roads, communication links, education, water and sanitation. Improving maternal healt

The scope of unmet maternal health needs in pediatric settings.

OBJECTIVE: Previous work has focused attention on the prevalence of specific maternal health problems known to affect children, such as smoking or depression. However, the cumulative health burden experienced by mothers and the potential for a practical pediatric health services response have not been examined. The aims of this study were to characterize: 1) the prevalence and cumulative burden of maternal health behaviors and conditions, 2) maternal access to a source of comprehensive adult primary care, and 3) maternal perceptions of a pediatric role in screening and referral. METHODS: We s

The effectiveness of community-based interventions to improve maternal and infant health in the Northeast of Brazil.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of a community-based intervention project aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality in a poor urban district in the city of Natal, in the Northeast of Brazil. METHODS: The intervention, called the ProNatal project, introduced a program of integrated community health care to a geographically defined population. The interventions included the establishment of antenatal clinics at the district's health centers, the opening of the maternity facilities at the polyclinic for low-risk deliveries, the introduction of a family planning clinic and a breast

Maternal nutrition, health, and survival.

The burden of maternal morbidity and mortality in developing countries is high. Each year, 600,000 women die from pregnancy-related causes and 62 million women suffer from morbidity and complications of pregnancy. The extent to which maternal nutrition can improve maternal health and survival is not well understood. Excluding deaths due to induced abortions, the other four main causes of maternal mortality (preeclampsia, hemorrhage, obstructed labor, and infection) may be amenable to nutrition interventions. The role of calcium in reducing the incidence of preeclampsia and hypertension is prom

A randomized controlled trial to assess the efficacy of Parenting-STAIR in treating maternal PTSD to reduce maltreatment recidivism: protocol for the Safe Mothers, Safe Children study.

BACKGROUND: Child maltreatment recidivism substantially increases the likelihood of adverse life outcomes, but there is little evidence that family preservation services are effective at reducing recidivism. Mothers in child welfare have very high rates of trauma exposure; maternal post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an intervention target that has the potential to reduce abuse and neglect. The Safe Mothers, Safe Children (SMSC) intervention program involves the delivery of an innovative combination of interventions, including Skills Training in Affective and Interpersonal Regulation (STA

Actions needed to improve maternal health.

The health of mothers and their children is of critical importance, both as a reflection of the current health status of a large segment of the world's population and as a predictor of the health of the next generation. A range of indicators of maternal and neonatal health exist-those primarily affecting pregnant and postpartum women, and those affecting the health and survival of infants. Pregnancy outcome may be affected by toxicant exposure, maternal habits, occupational hazards, psychosocial factors, socioeconomic status, racial disparity, chronic stress, and infections. An increase in obs
