Fraction Intervention for Students With Mathematics Difficulties: Lessons Learned From Five Randomized Controlled Trials.

In this article, the authors summarize results from 5 randomized controlled trials assessing the effects of intervention to improve the fraction performance of fourth-grade students at risk for difficulty in learning about fractions. The authors begin by explaining the importance of competence with fractions and why an instructional focus on fractions magnitude understanding may improve learning. They then describe an intervention that relies strongly on this type of understanding about fractions instruction, and they provide an overview of the intervention's overall effects. This is followed

Parasitic contamination cycles and mathematical epidemiology.

Mathematics plays an essential role in epidemiology. Whether simple questions are asked about simple relations, or complicated questions about complicated relations, the best fitting mathematical figures are always searched for. In a holistic approach, it may often be necessary to assess complicated relations by using (real) mathematical models (simulation models). Examples are presented of parasitic contamination cycles which require more or less complicated mathematics to answer epidemiological questions regarding prevalence and incidence of infection in the human population: Trichinella, To

Mathematics, anxiety, and the brain.

Given that achievement in learning mathematics at school correlates with work and social achievements, it is important to understand the cognitive processes underlying abilities to learn mathematics efficiently as well as reasons underlying the occurrence of mathematics anxiety (i.e. feelings of tension and fear upon facing mathematical problems or numbers) among certain individuals. Over the last two decades, many studies have shown that learning mathematical and numerical concepts relies on many cognitive processes, including working memory, spatial skills, and linguistic abilities. In this

Spatial skills mediate gender differences in arithmetic strategy use despite comparable arithmetic accuracy.

Gender disparities in math-intensive STEM fields can be traced back to early childhood. The current study examined a potential factor through which these disparities may emerge: gender differences in arithmetic strategy use. In a sample of 80 U.S. second- and third-graders, we found that gender differences in arithmetic strategy use appear even when girls and boys demonstrate comparable arithmetic accuracy. Specifically, girls used counting strategies about 30 percentage points more often than boys, whereas boys relied more on transformation strategies (i.e., mentally transform a arithmetic pr

Time required for judgments of numerical inequality: Revisiting symbolic estrangement.

Whether the meaning of symbolic numerals is represented by the approximate number system (ANS) is a subject of long-standing interest, with contradictory results reported across educated adults and developing children. To resolve past discrepancies, we investigated the time required to make judgments of numerical inequality across an expansive numerical spectrum (1-999) and range of ratios (1.125-4.5) in 217 children (ages 4-12) and 66 adults. Testing an experience-dependent framework, Study 1 evaluated whether the relative fluency of symbolic and non-symbolic processing changes with age accor

Recruiting spatial-numerical representations to increase arithmetic fluency in low-income students.

This study examined the effects of training involving spatial versus nonspatial representations of numerical magnitude for promoting arithmetic fluency. The key goal was to advance theoretical understanding of the relation between spatial and math learning, while simultaneously laying the groundwork for the development of future educational interventions. Toward this goal, the study tested the hypothesis that the use of spatial representations during training facilitates arithmetic fluency via improvements in numerical magnitude knowledge. Participants (first graders from low-income racially/e

Teaching Constant Rate-of-Change Problem-Solving to Secondary Students With or at Risk of Learning Disabilities.

Rate of change (i.e., slope) is a critical mathematics concept for success in everyday life, academics, and professional careers. Students with or at risk of learning disabilities struggle with solving rate-of-change problems, especially word problems. Interventions that incorporate representations and problem-solving strategies are effective for improving the word problem-solving performance of students with disabilities. This multiple-probe, multiple-baseline, single-case design study evaluated the effects of an intervention that included an integrated, concrete-representational-abstract tea

Mechanistic models are hypotheses: A perspective.

Science involves perceiving patterns (events that are repeated) in observations, hypothesizing causal explanations (underlying processes), and testing them. Mathematical models either describe or provide explanations for patterns. The equations of descriptive models have convenient mathematical properties while those of mechanistic ones correspond to processes. The parameters of descriptive models are fit to observations by choosing values that minimize discrepant predictions. Because mechanistic models are hypotheses about the processes underlying patterns, their parameters should not be fit,

Modelling Cellular Interactions and Dynamics During Kidney Morphogenesis.

Kidney disease and renal disorders account for a significant proportion of health complications in mid-late adulthood worldwide. Many renal deficiencies are due to improper formation of the kidneys before birth, which are caused by disorders in the developmental process that arise from genetic and/or environmental factors. Mathematical modelling can help build on experimental knowledge to increase our understanding of the complexities of kidney organogenesis. In this paper, we present a discrete cell-based model of kidney development. Specifically, we model the tip of the developing ureteric t

Atto-Foxes and Other Minutiae.

This paper addresses the problem of extinction in continuous models of population dynamics associated with small numbers of individuals. We begin with an extended discussion of extinction in the particular case of a stochastic logistic model, and how it relates to the corresponding continuous model. Two examples of 'small number dynamics' are then considered. The first is what Mollison calls the 'atto-fox' problem (in a model of fox rabies), referring to the problematic theoretical occurrence of a predicted rabid fox density of [Formula: see text] (atto-) per square kilometre. The second is ho

[Difference between numerical and verbal evaluation in the reflection of the attributes].

When evaluating something, both numerical indices (numerical evaluation) and verbal impressions (verbal evaluation) can be used. Previous studies suggest that these evaluations differ in the reflection of typical attributes and atypical attributes of the object being evaluated. In this study, two experiments were performed to examine this suggestion. In both experiments, subjects were required to evaluate the effects of countermeasure programs to prevent plague. In the first experiment, the atypical attributes of the object were manipulated, and in the second experiment, the attributes that pa

Newborn infants perceive abstract numbers.

Although infants and animals respond to the approximate number of elements in visual, auditory, and tactile arrays, only human children and adults have been shown to possess abstract numerical representations that apply to entities of all kinds (e.g., 7 samurai, seas, or sins). Do abstract numerical concepts depend on language or culture, or do they form a part of humans' innate, core knowledge? Here we show that newborn infants spontaneously associate stationary, visual-spatial arrays of 4-18 objects with auditory sequences of events on the basis of number. Their performance provides evidence

Reading and mathematics: Two sides, same coin?

Word problem-solving (WPS) in mathematics and reading comprehension (RC) are essential to academic literacy. Previous studies suggest that WPS and RC involve common processes related to number and word processing. However, the nature of these connections is not yet fully understood. In this study, we examined the influence of reading and calculation fluency on the development of WPS and RC by conducting two longitudinal studies (L1 and L2) with children entering first grade in 2019 and 2018, respectively. Significant associations were found between reading fluency and RC, as well as between ad

Identifying Fraction Measures as Screeners of Mathematics Risk Status.

This study investigated the accuracy of three fraction measures (i.e., fraction number line estimation accuracy, general fraction concepts, and fraction arithmetic) for screening fourth graders who might be at risk for mathematics difficulties. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analyses assessed diagnostic accuracy of the fraction measures for predicting which students would not meet state standards on the state mathematics test in fourth grade (n = 411), fifth grade (n = 362), and sixth grade (n = 304). A combined measure consisting primarily of fraction number line estimation ite

Who is afraid of math? Two sources of genetic variance for mathematical anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Emerging work suggests that academic achievement may be influenced by the management of affect as well as through efficient information processing of task demands. In particular, mathematical anxiety has attracted recent attention because of its damaging psychological effects and potential associations with mathematical problem solving and achievement. This study investigated the genetic and environmental factors contributing to the observed differences in the anxiety people feel when confronted with mathematical tasks. In addition, the genetic and environmental mechanisms that lin

Knowledge assessment: Squeezing information from multiple-choice testing.

Knowledge assessment via testing can be viewed from two vantage points: that of the test administrator and that of the test taker. From the administrator's perspective, the objective is to discover what an individual knows about a domain of interest. From that of the test taker, the challenge is to reveal what one knows. In this article we describe a procedure for administering and scoring multiple-choice tests that satisfies both of these objectives and we present experimental data that demonstrate its effectiveness. The method allows test takers to provide specific information about their co

Convective stability of the critical waves of an FKPP-type model for self-organized growth.

We construct the traveling wave solutions of an FKPP growth process of two densities of particles, and prove that the critical traveling waves are locally stable in a space where the perturbations can grow exponentially at the back of the wave. The considered reaction-diffusion system was introduced by Hannezo et al. (Cell 171(1):242-255, 2017) in the context of branching morphogenesis: active, branching particles accumulate inactive particles, which do not react. Thus, the system features a continuum of steady state solutions, complicating the analysis. We adopt a result by Faye and Holzer (J

Temporary Cross-Immunity as a Plausible Driver of Asynchronous Cycles of Dengue Serotypes.

Many infectious diseases exist as multiple variants, with interactions between variants potentially driving epidemiological dynamics. These diseases include dengue, which infects hundreds of millions of people every year and exhibits complex multi-serotype dynamics. Antibodies produced in response to primary infection by one of the four dengue serotypes can produce a period of temporary cross-immunity (TCI) to infection by other serotypes. After this period, the remaining antibodies can facilitate the entry of heterologous serotypes into target cells, thus enhancing severity of secondary infec

Effect of Population Partitioning on the Probability of Silent Circulation of Poliovirus.

Polio can circulate unobserved in regions that are challenging to monitor. To assess the probability of silent circulation, simulation models can be used to understand transmission dynamics when detection is unreliable. Model assumptions, however, impact the estimated probability of silent circulation. Here, we examine the impact of having distinct populations, rather than a single well-mixed population, with a discrete-individual model including environmental surveillance. We show that partitioning a well-mixed population into networks of distinct communities may result in a higher probabilit

A Data-Driven Mathematical Model of the Heroin and Fentanyl Epidemic in Tennessee.

Opioid addiction represents a major national health issue spanning decades. In recent years, prescription opioid use disorder has increasingly led to heroin and fentanyl use, with subsequent increases in mortality rates due to overdose. In this paper, we present a mechanistic, epidemic model for prescription opioid addiction and illicit heroin or fentanyl addiction which aims to better understand and predict the dynamics between these two stages of opioid use disorder. Our model aims to be both parsimonious and robust: as a system of five differential equations it is appropriate for use in the
