Regional odontodysplasia (RO) is a rare dental anomaly of unknown etiology that can affect both deciduous and permanent dentition. RO is characterized by severe hypoplasia of enamel and dentin, and teeth affected are friable and more susceptible to caries and fractures. Most of the lesions occur in the anterior maxilla and correlation with clinical and radiographic features is essential to provide a correct diagnosis. The major criteria for diagnosis are predominantly based on radiography, which shows presence of large pulp chambers and a marked reduction in the radiopacity of enamel and denti…

A case of aneurysmal bone cyst of the maxilla is reported. The clinical and radiological feautres, histopathology and treatment, are described in detail. Although the pathogenesis is still obscure, surgical excision is considered to be the treatment of choice.

OBJECTIVE: The aim: To find out the sources of formation and the chronological sequence of the morphogenesis of the maxilla at the early stages of human ontogenesis.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: 14 series of consecutive histological specimens of human embryos and prefetuses (4,0-66,0 mm of parietal-coccygeal length) aged from 4 to 11 weeks of intrauterine development with the use of a complex of modern morphological methods of investigation (anthropometry, morphometry, microscopy, and 3D computer reconstruction) were studied.
RESULTS: Results: On the basis of a complex of mor…

Dopaminergic dysfunction in reward circuitry is well-documented as a contributor to addictive behaviors. Evidence indicates that changes in synchronous neural activity between brain regions mediating reward and cognitive functions may significantly contribute to substance-related disorders. In this commentary we highlight findings showing that the pro-dopaminergic nutraceutical (KB220) enhances functional connectivity between reward and cognitive brain areas in both animal and human studies. Animal studies demonstrate that KB220 activates important brain reward-related regions, including the n

The anterior alveolar ridge of the maxilla is a frequent site for pathology, most of it involving underlying bone and readily observable radiologically. Although much of this disease presents as well-defined unilocular radiolucencies arising adjacent to the apices of non-vital anterior teeth, thus being periapical radiolucencies of inflammatory origin (PRIO), a minority reflects more serious disease such as neoplasia. The most serious of the latter are malignancies, most frequently squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs). Although the majority of SCCs arise from the oral or nasal mucosa and secondaril…

Central odontogenic fibroma (COF) is an uncommon tumor that accounts for 0.1% of all odontogenic tumors; it has been defined as a benign neo … ort a case of a 15-year-old female patient presented with painless swelling of the left side of the maxilla since her childhood. Radiographs revealed an expanding ill-defined radiolucency with a displacement of the adjacent tooth. The impacted tooth was pushed posteriorly. The lesion was removed surgically. There were no postoperative complications.

An innocuously appearing gingival mass in the maxilla revealed extensive osteolysis on radiographic examination. A rare clinical presentation of synovial sarcoma, appropriate diagnostic strategies and suitable treatment protocol in a 21-year-old male is reported herewith. It is only the third case of primary monophasic synovial sarcoma of the maxilla to be reported to the best of our knowledge and the first to have occurred in a male patient. The importance of considering synovial sarcoma in the differential diagnosis of any mass in the oral cavity is highlighted.

Radicular cysts are inflammatory odontogenic cysts of tooth bearing areas of the jaws. Most of these lesions involve the apex of offending tooth and appear as well-defined radiolucencies. Owing to its clinical characteristics similar to other more commonly occurring lesions in the oral cavity, differential diagnosis should include dentigerous cyst, ameloblastoma, odontogenic keratocyst, periapical cementoma and Pindborg tumour. The present case report documents a massive radicular cyst crossing the midline of the palate. Based on clinical, radiographical and histopathological findings, the pre

AIM: To understand the aggressiveness of lesions in immunocompromised patients. Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a non-neoplastic intraosseous lesion, anterior to the molars and more commonly in the mandible. It is an uncommon lesion accounting for less than 7% of all benign jaw lesions found predominantly in children and young adults with a female predilection of about 2:1 ratio.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 22-year-old male patient came to the department with a growth in the anterior part of the maxilla with pain, rapid pace of growth and which recurred after initial excision as told to us in …

Despite the fact that cemento-ossifying fibromas of the maxilla may be quite large and locally aggressive, en-bloc excision is achieved by gentle blunt dissection, with the whole tumour mass peeled out from the adjacent structures. Until recently different fibro-osseous tumours that contained cementum were classified together as "cementomas". In 1992 The World Health Organization adopted a new classification that included these fibromas as benign osseous tumours. While such tumours of the mandible are common, those of the maxilla are rare. They are growth products of periodontal membrane remna…

An aneurysmal bone cyst is a rare bone lesion. Its origin and precise nature remain unknown. It is seen as a locally-destructive, rapidly expandable, benign multicystic mass. We report a 17-year-old boy with an aneurysmal bone cyst of the maxilla, with extensive local involvement and bony destruction that was treated surgically. There was no recurrence noted after four years of follow-up.

The case report is of a 30 year old male, who complained of a slowly expanding swelling in the maxilla in the left premolar region. The swelling was clinically and radiographically diagnosed as Central Giant Cell Granuloma. The patient also had Angles Class 2 Division 2 Malocclusion in which repeated micro trauma may have possibly contributed to the formation of the tumor. The tumor was surgically removed under general anesthesia followed by local injections of corticosteroids.

An aneurysmal bone cyst of the maxilla is a nonneoplastic, uncommon, solitary bone lesion recognized by distinct radiographic and histopathological characteristics. It is described as a localized and quickly expandable benign tumor, which can reach a considerable size. It is characterized by the replacement of bone by spongy fibro-osseous tissue and a locally destructive and multicystic lesion filled with blood. It is attributed to a circulatory disturbance leading to locally increased venous pressure but with an unclear etiology. It takes place mainly in the long bones and in patients less th…
