Vitamin B12 and folate deficiencies are major causes of megaloblastic anemia. Causes of B12 deficiency include pernicious anemia, gastric surgery, intestinal disorders, dietary deficiency, and inherited disorders of B12 transport or absorption. The prevalence of folate deficiency has decreased because of folate fortification, but deficiency still occurs from malabsorption and increased demand. Other causes include drugs and inborn metabolic errors. Clinical features of megaloblastic anemia include anemia, cytopenias, jaundice, and megaloblastic marrow morphology. Neurologic symptoms occur in B

We present an eight-year-old boy who initially presented to us with megaloblastic anemia and subsequently developed dislocation of lens. The child had a positive sodium nitroprusside test and homocystinuria. He was diagnosed to have homocystinuria type 1. His anemia improved on oral pyridoxine and folic acid therapy. Homocystinuria should be remembered as a cause of megaloblastic anemia.

A patient with sickle cell trait and pernicious anemia in relapse may appear to have sickle thalassemia because HbA2 levels can be elevated and the peripheral blood smear may contain target cells, teardrop cells, and eliptocytes. A normal hemoglobin alpha:beta chain ratio, a megaloblastic bone marrow, and correction of the abnormal hematologic morphology after administration of vitamin B12 will establish the correct diagnosis.

A young Australian woman developed a severe nutritional megaloblastic anaemia due to poor intake of vitamin B12 and, possibly, of folic acid. Simple dietary advice resulted in an adequate intake of vitamin B12 and folic acid, and in maintenance of normal serum levels of both vitamins.

INTRODUCTION: Megaloblastic anaemia may present with pancytopenia and clinically mimic other causes of pancytopenia including myelodysplastic syndrome or aplastic anaemia. Bone marrow examination may be required for precise differentiation. The study was conducted to evaluate the role of mean platelet volume (MPV) to discriminate between pancytopenia due to megaloblastic anaemia or non-megaloblastic causes.
METHODS: A total of 268 cases of pancytopenia were divided into megaloblastic and non- megaloblastic group depending on clinical, laboratory and bone marrow examination. Mean MPV was stati

BACKGROUND: Deficiency of vitamin B(12) or folate causes megaloblastic anemia (MA). The disease presents with pancytopenia due to the excessive cellular apoptosis of hematopoietic progenitor. MA is characterized by the presence of high mean corpuscular volume in the blood routine test and hyperlobulation nuclei of the granulocytes in the peripheral blood smears, and megaloblasts in the bone marrow.
METHODS: We report a rare case, in which megaloblastic anemia was masked by an unrecognized hemoglobinopathy and presented with normocytic anemia and atypical morphological features of bone marrow.…

BACKGROUND: Vitamin B12 deficiency has been associated with a very wide spectrum of neurologic manifestations and the majority of cases occur in infants, pregnant women, and elderly people. In children, common neurological complications include neuropathy, neuropsychiatric features, infantile tremor syndrome, developmental delay, cognitive decline, spastic paraparesis due to subacute combined degeneration of cord, seizures, encephalopathy, extrapyramidal features, and neuropathy. Vitamin B12 is known to cause sensory ataxia, along with impaired position and vibration sense, as well as variable

Megaloblastic anemia (MA) patients often exhibit hemolysis, but it is not clear whether there are other hemolytic mechanisms in addition to intramedullary hemolysis. We retrospectively analyzed the clinical characteristics of 124 MA patients, measured erythrocyte physical parameters in two patients with hemolysis and one healthy volunteer by atomic force microscopy, and measured 18F-FDG uptake in one MA patient with hemolysis. In multivariate analysis, hemolysis was associated with mean corpuscular volume (MCV) and indirect bilirubin. A receiver operating characteristic curve analysis, with se
