Persistent activity during working memory maintenance predicts long-term memory formation in the human hippocampus.

Working memory (WM) and long-term memory (LTM) are often viewed as separate cognitive systems. Little is known about how these systems interact when forming memories. We recorded single neurons in the human medial temporal lobe while patients maintained novel items in WM and completed a subsequent recognition memory test for the same items. In the hippocampus, but not in the amygdala, the level of WM content-selective persistent activity during WM maintenance was predictive of whether the item was later recognized with high confidence or forgotten. By contrast, visually evoked activity in the

Task-dependent reinstatement of irrelevant features from long-term memory into visual working memory templates.

Objects actively stored in visual working memory (VWM) produce VWM-based attentional capture. Interestingly, for an object's features to be stored in VWM, they do not need to be shown but can also be reinstated from long-term memory (LTM). Unlike shown features, reinstated features in VWM sometimes capture attention even when task-irrelevant, suggesting observers may be able to choose when reinstatement occurs. To investigate the control of LTM reinstatement, we examined how capture by reinstated features is influenced by differences in task demands. Participants memorized objects with specifi

Expectation-driven changes in cortical functional connectivity influence working memory and long-term memory performance.

Expectations generated by predictive cues increase the efficiency of perceptual processing for complex stimuli (e.g., faces, scenes); however, the impact this has on working memory (WM) and long-term memory (LTM) has not yet been investigated. Here, healthy young adults performed delayed-recognition tasks that differed only in stimulus category expectations, while behavioral and functional magnetic resonance imaging data were collected. Univariate and functional-connectivity analyses were used to examine expectation-driven, prestimulus neural modulation, networks that regulate this modulation,

Short-term and long-term effects of diazepam on the memory for discrimination and generalization of scopolamine.

Benzodiazepines are among the most widely prescribed and misused psychopharmaceutical drugs. Although they are well-tolerated, they are also capable of producing amnestic effects similar to those observed after pharmacological or organic cholinergic dysfunction. To date, the effect of benzodiazepine diazepam on the memory for discrimination of anticholinergic drugs has not been reported. The aim of the present study was to analyze the immediate and long-term effects of diazepam on a drug discrimination task with scopolamine. Male Wistar rats were trained to discriminate between scopolamine and

Enhanced separation of long-term memory from short-term memory on top of LSTM: Neural network-based stock index forecasting.

LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory Network) is currently extensively utilized for forecasting financial time series, primarily due to its distinct advantages in separating the long-term from the short-term memory information within a sequence. However, the experimental results presented in this paper indicate that LSTM may struggle to clearly differentiate between these two types of information. To overcome this limitation, we propose the ARMA-RNN-LSTM Hybrid Model, aimed at enhancing the separation between the long-term and short-term memory information on top of LSTM framework. The experiment in t

The role of executive functions in long-term memory: case report.

The role of executive functions in long-term memory has been studied. We describe a single-case study, consisting of a 45-year-old male patient, hospitalized for right frontal stroke. After the stroke, the patient had memory alterations in everyday activities. However, performance in short-term memory tests was not significantly altered. Long-term memory assessments included pre- and post-stroke episodic, semantic, and procedural memories. Specific skills involved in the acquisition of new learning (auditory-verbal and visual reproduction) were also evaluated, as well as executive functions. T

Medium strength visual long-term memories are the most fragile.

What memories do humans forget? One theory proposes that memories stored with moderate activation levels are weakened when faced with competitive stress so that they are particularly prone to be forgotten. However, research suggests that visual long-term memories are stronger than memories of other modalities, and therefore may never fall into this moderate activation zone. Here we tested these competing predictions by showing to-be-remembered pictures while we recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) indexing memory activation during encoding. We found that visual memories with medium levels

Suppressor of Hairless is required for long-term memory formation in Drosophila.

Suppressor of Hairless [Su(H)] is a DNA-binding protein of the Notch-signaling pathway, which is important for developmental processes and has been implicated in behavior plasticity. It acts as a transcriptional activator in the Notch pathway, but also as a repressor in the absence of Notch signaling. Our previous work has shown that Notch signaling contributes to long-term memory formation in the Drosophila adult brain. In the present report, we show that Su(H) null heterozygous mutants perform normally for learning, early memory, and anesthesia-resistant memory, whereas long-term memory is i

Hand-holding reduces the long-term painfulness of social memories.

Hand-holding is a powerful form of social support that has been shown to alleviate physical pain. However, the effect of hand-holding on the ability to alleviate social pain has been less well explored. The current research examined whether holding a romantic partner's hand while revisiting socially painful memories could reduce the immediate experience of pain and whether this brief intervention provided long-term relief. Participants (n = 50) in long-term, monogamous relationships recalled socially painful memories while holding their partner's hand or a squeeze ball. Throughout the study, p

Orienting selective attention within long-term contextual memories.

Selective attention is central to long-term memory retrieval, yet how attention selects and prioritizes relevant memory contents remains underexplored. Well-controlled experimental designs aimed at isolating and systematically manipulating attentional orienting in long-term memory would greatly advance this cause. The current study addresses this gap. Building on the precue and retrocue designs from working-memory research, we introduce an experimental framework to investigate how selective attention operates within contextual long-term memory. Across three pre-registered experiments (n = 235)

Hypnotherapy and IBS: Implicit, long-term stress memory in the ENS?

The association between irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and psychiatric and mood disorders may be more fundamental than was previously believed. Prenatal, perinatal, postnatal, and early-age conditions can have a key role in the development of IBS. Subthreshold mental disorders (SMDs) could also be a significant source of countless diverse diseases and may be a cause of IBS development. We hypothesize that stress-induced implicit memories may persist throughout life by epigenetic processes in the enteric nervous system (ENS). These stress-induced implicit memories may play an essential role in

Shared Representational Formats for Information Maintained in Working Memory and Information Retrieved from Long-Term Memory.

Current theories propose that the short-term retention of information in working memory (WM) and the recall of information from long-term memory (LTM) are supported by overlapping neural mechanisms in occipital and parietal cortex. However, the extent of the shared representations between WM and LTM is unclear. We designed a spatial memory task that allowed us to directly compare the representations of remembered spatial information in WM and LTM with carefully matched behavioral response precision between tasks. Using multivariate pattern analyses on functional magnetic resonance imaging data

Taurine reverses long-term memory deficits caused by LPS induced neuroinflammation.

BACKGROUND: Despite neuroinflammation being an initially protective response made by the central nervous system (CNS), as it becomes chronic, it can lead to neuronal damage since the cytokines which are released by microglia potentialize cellular death due to excitotoxicity, and this, in turn, promotes the release of pro-inflammatory mediators, feeding this way a self-sustaining cycle of neuroinflammatory response, which favor subsequent neurodegeneration. Given the fact that until this moment, there are not any therapeutic alternatives able to stop the neurodegeneration, the objective of the

Designing for memory: how pathway configuration shapes long-term navigational representations.

BACKGROUND: Spatial memories undergo systems consolidation, typically transforming from flexible, hippocampal-dependent representations of spatial relations, to rigid, extra-hippocampal route representations. This study investigated whether environmental design influences this consolidation process to enhance long-term wayfinding. METHODS: We compared navigational performance in a virtual shopping centre featuring either a "Grid" configuration, which promotes flexible navigational representations, or a "Star" configuration, which encourages route-based sequence learning. In Experiment 1 (N =

Leveraging long short term memory in air pollution prediction in Nairobi.

Air pollution poses a major environmental health risk, leading to approximately 6.7 million premature deaths annually. Key pollutants like PM2.5, carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3) significantly affect air quality. This study utilizes a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) deep neural network algorithm to predict air pollution levels, focusing on PM2.5 concentrations in Nairobi. Sensor data from GeoHealth Hub was split into training, validation, and testing datasets. The LSTM model, optimized with the Adam algorithm and evaluated using Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), demonstra

Astrocyte and neuronal Panx1 support long-term reference memory in mice.

Pannexin 1 (Panx1) are ubiquitously expressed proteins that form plasma membrane channels permeable to anions and moderate sized signaling molecules (e.g., ATP, glutamate). In the nervous system, activation of Panx1 channels have been extensively shown to contribute to distinct neurological disorders (epilepsy, chronic pain, migraine, neuroAIDS, etc.) but knowledge of extent to which these channels have a physiological role remains restricted to three studies supporting their involvement in hippocampus dependent learning. Given that Panx1 channels may provide an important mechanism for activit

Repeat testing enhances long-term verbal memory in children with epilepsy.

To (i) determine whether accelerated long-term forgetting (ALF) can be found using standardized verbal memory test materials in children with genetic generalized epilepsy (GGE) and temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE), and (ii) to establish whether ALF is impacted by executive skills and repeat testing over long delays. One hundred and twenty-three children aged 8 to 16, (28 with GGE, 23 with TLE, and 72 typically developing; TD) completed a battery of standardized tests assessing executive functioning and memory for two stories. Stories were recalled immediately and after a 30-min delay. To examine w
