The authors report a patient who had five relapses of encephalopathy with seizures and aseptic meningitis that coincided with the end of the menstrual cycle. High titers of antithyroid antibodies and the patient's response to corticosteroids suggested Hashimoto's encephalopathy. Pharmacologic suppression of the menstrual cycle made it possible to withdraw corticosteroids.

It is known that women who smoke cigarettes and use oral contraceptives are more likely to have breakthrough bleeding than women who do not smoke. In this article, we review possible mechanisms by which cigarette smoke and its constituents may contribute to irregular bleeding, highlight differences in the activities of nicotine and cigarette smoke, and postulate further studies in the area.

Stress is a common cause of hypothalamic amenorrhoea. In our laboratory, we have studied the effects of an inflammatory-like stress on gonadotropin secretion and on the menstrual cycle in a nonhuman primate model.
