Course of acute nonspecific mesenteric lymphadenitis: single-center experience.

UNLABELLED: Available reports dealing with acute nonspecific mesenteric lymphadenitis do not address the total duration of symptoms. However, it is commonly assumed a time for recovery ≤ 4 weeks. The purpose of this report was to investigate the course of acute nonspecific mesenteric lymphadenitis in childhood. A review was made of the patients aged ≤ 16 years in whom the diagnosis of acute nonspecific mesenteric lymphadenitis was established between 2011 and 2015 at the Pediatric Emergency Unit. The records of the Pediatric Emergency Unit, those of the referring family doctors, and the result…

Cryptococcal mesenteric lymphadenitis: an unusual cause of acute abdomen.

Cryptococcal infection of intraabdominal organs or tissues is extremely rare. Herein we report a child with mesenteric cryptococcal lymphadenitis who presented with an acute abdomen misdiagnosed as acute appendicitis. Definitive diagnosis was established with 2nd look and lymph node biopsy. Clinicians should remember that cryptococcal infection of mesenteric lymph nodes may rarely mimic an acute abdomen and cause delay in diagnosis.

["Yersinia pseudotuberculosis" in a case of mesenteric lymphadenitis (author's transl)].

An eleven-year old girl's case of an inflammatory process of the right lower abdomen is described, with a positive agglutination reaction to … ated, further identified as "Y. pseudotuberculosis" type I-A. A comment follows on the frequency of mesenteric lymphadenitis as cause of inflammatory processes of the lower right abdomen in children and the rarity of isolation of "Y. pseudotuberculosis" as etiological agent as compared with the more common "Y. enterocolitica".

Mycobacterium branderi Infection in a Horse with Granulomatous Mesenteric Lymphadenitis.

Although relatively uncommon in horses, infections caused by Mycobacterium spp. may affect the gastrointestinal tract. Mycobacterium branderi is a non-tuberculous Mycobacterium (NTM) that causes respiratory infections in man. Non-tuberculous mycobacteria may also affect horses; however, infection by M. branderi has not yet been reported in this species. This report describes the clinical, pathological, microbiological and molecular findings of M. branderi infection in a horse, causing granulomatous mesenteric lymphadenitis. A 17-year-old Thoroughbred stallion had a 3-month history of chronic d…

[Omentitis and mesenteric lymphadenitis: is there a relationship? Apropos of 3 cases].

The authors report three cases of acute epiploitis diagnosed intraoperatively and discuss the etiopathogenetic hypotheses. They suggest a relationship between acute epiploitis and mesenteric lymphadenitis, as well as their common origin.

Acute Nonspecific Mesenteric Lymphadenitis: More Than "No Need for Surgery".

Acute nonspecific, or primary, mesenteric lymphadenitis is a self-limiting inflammatory condition affecting the mesenteric lymph nodes, whose presentation mimics appendicitis or intussusception. It typically occurs in children, adolescents, and young adults. White blood count and C-reactive protein are of limited usefulness in distinguishing between patients with and without mesenteric lymphadenitis. Ultrasonography, the mainstay of diagnosis, discloses 3 or more mesenteric lymph nodes with a short-axis diameter of 8 mm or more without any identifiable underlying inflammatory process. Once the…

Is mesenteric lymphadenitis a cause of ovarian reserve reduction? - Case Report.

Mesenteric lymphadenitis is a clinical condition that affects mostly children and teenagers. Its symptoms include fever, severe abdominal pain, nausea, and, in some cases, diarrhea, constipation, and acute abdomen. This paper describes the case of a 16-year-old patient with mesenteric lymphadenitis submitted to an exploratory laparoscopy for suppurative lymph nodes that evolved to a drastic reduction of ovarian reserve. Because of the patients age, she was offered cryopreservation of her ovarian tissue.

Characteristics of mesenteric lymphadenitis in comparison with those of acute appendicitis in children.

UNLABELLED: Mesenteric lymphadenitis (ML) is considered as one of the most common alternative diagnosis in a child with suspected acute appendicitis (AA). In this retrospective study, patients diagnosed with ML (n = 99) were compared in terms of demographic, clinical, and laboratory findings to patients diagnosed with AA (n = 102). This comparison was applied for both lymph nodes smaller and larger than 10 mm. When compared to patients with AA, patients with ML had significantly longer duration of symptoms prior to emergency department (ED) presentation (2.4 ± 2.6 vs 1.4 ± 1.4 days, P = 0.002)…

[A case of tuberculous mesenteric lymphadenitis and peritonitis with symptoms of acute abdomen].

Both of tuberculous mesenteric lymphadenitis and tuberculous peritonitis are now rather rare in parallel with the decrease of the incidence of tuberculosis as a whole. Here, we report a case of tuberculous mesenteric lymphadenitis complicated with tuberculous peritonitis. A 28-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with pulmonary tuberculosis. Antituberculous chemotherapy was started and his chest X-ray findings were improved. After 11 weeks of the treatment, high fever of 39.0 degrees C developed suddenly and he complained right lower abdominal pain. During laparotomy performed on suspicio…

Acute mesenteric and retroperitoneal lymphadenitis in systemic lupus erythematosus: case report.

In a young woman with clinical evidence of acute cutaneous, musculoskeletal, and neurologic manifestations of systemic lupus erythematosus, computed tomography (CT) showed enlarged, centrally hypoattenuating mesenteric and retroperitoneal lymph nodes. After treatment with steroids, the CT appearance of the lymph nodes returned to normal. The differential diagnosis of lymph nodes with central hypoattenuation includes Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection, metastatic disease (especially squamous cell carcinoma and germ cell tumor), Whipple's disease, and celiac disease in addition to lupus lympha

Acute mesenteric lymphadenitis due to Yersinia pseudotuberculosis lacking a virulence plasmid.

A serotype 4a strain of Yersinia pseudotuberculosis lacking the virulence plasmid pYV (pYV- strain) was isolated from the mesenteric lymph nodes but not from the stool or the appendix of a 10-year-old girl with a diagnosis of acute mesenteric lymphadenitis. Microscopically, reticulocytic abscess and lymphadenitis were persent in the enlarged mesenteric lymph nodes. Antibody against the isolate was detected in the serum. The isolate was negative for the presence of plasmid pYV and plasmid pYV-mediated properties, including autoagglutination and calcium dependency, but was positive for chromosom…
