BACKGROUND: Persistent descending mesocolon (PDM) is caused by the absence of fusion of the descending colon to the retroperitoneum. We herein report two colorectal cancer cases with PDM that were treated with laparoscopic surgery.
CASE PRESENTATION: Case 1: a 50-year-old man with sigmoid colon cancer and synchronous liver metastasis. After neoadjuvant chemotherapy, he underwent laparoscopic sigmoidectomy with lymph node dissection cutting the root of the inferior mesenteric artery (IMA) and synchronous liver resection. He experienced postoperative stenosis of the reconstructed colon possibly…

Schwannomas are a type of peripheral nerve sheath tumors with clinically indolent behavior. Though, they can occur anywhere in body, the incidence in retroperitoneum, mediastinum, and pelvis is exceedingly rare. We present a case of a 58-year-old female with a massive twisted tumor arising from sigmoid mesocolon. The tumor was diagnosed to be a case of cellular schwannoma, an exceedingly rare tumor in this location with rare presentation.

Sclerosing stromal tumour (SST) is a rare benign sex cord stromal tumour of the ovary. We report a case of sclerosing stromal tumour of the … ne because SST was least suspected. From literature this is the first case of SST in the transverse mesocolon reported in the West African subregion, and may probably be one of the rare cases of hormonally active SST.

Mesenteric cysts are rare and occur in patients of any age. They are asymptomatic and found incidentally or during the management of their complications. They commonly originate from the small bowel mesentery, although a proportion has been found to originate from the mesocolon (24%) and retroperitoneum (14.5%). A mesenteric cyst originating in the sigmoid mesocolon is a very rare finding.

The anatomy of the mesocolon can be seen on multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) scans, and its most important anatomic landmarks are the mesocolic vessels. The high spatial resolution of the current generation scanner coupled with the ability to generate high quality multiplanar images is very helpful in the delineation of the mesocolon. These vessels include the ileocolic and right colic vessels for the ascending mesocolon, the middle colic vessels for the transverse mesocolon, and the inferior mesenteric vein for the sigmoid and descending mesocolon. Knowledge of the anatomic landmarks …

Sclerosing mesenteritis is a rare, usually benign disorder of the mesentery. Depending on the predominant tissue component (inflammation, fat, or fibrosis), it is known as mesenteric panniculitis or retractile mesenteritis. We present a rare case of retractile mesenteritis of the mesocolon as a cause of severe abdominal pain. US, CT, and MRI were the imaging modalities used. We emphasize the MR finding of a fibrous capsula in retractile mesenteritis, as this is to our knowledge the first study to describe this entity. This finding may be valuable for establishing a diagnosis of sclerosing mese…

Investigation of a patient with rectal bleeding showed the hemorrhage to be due to a lipoma of mesocolon protruding into the transverse colon. A literature review failed to discover a report of a similar case.

An abdominal ectopic pregnancy is a rare and potentially life-threatening form of ectopic pregnancy, associated with a high maternal mortality rate. We report the case of a 25-year-old woman with an abdominal ectopic pregnancy who underwent three surgical interventions, including diagnostic laparoscopy, before definitive diagnosis and treatment. Management involved a multidisciplinary team of gynecologists, general surgeons, and interventional radiologists, using advanced imaging, selective arterial embolization, and laparotomy with removal of the abdominal mass and transverse mesocolon epiplo…

Hemolymphangioma is an extremely rare type of lymphatic and vascular malformation, histologically comprised of both cystic dilated veins and … ss, and resection was advised. The mass was completely excised laparoscopically from the transverse mesocolon. Histopathology verified the diagnosis of hemolymphangioma. The patient recovered uneventfully, and no recurrence was identified at 3 months follow-up. Hemolymphangioma is more common in women and occurs in the fourth to fifth decades of life. The i …

Ascariasis is an intestinal disease caused by Ascaris lumbricoides. Most patients with ascariasis are asymptomatic; however, the presence of many larvae in the bowel can cause gastrointestinal complications, such as intestinal obstruction, obstructive jaundice, cholangitis, cholecystitis, and pancreatitis. Herein, we report a case of ascariasis presenting as hematoma and active bleeding in the sigmoid mesocolon of a 74-year-old man on computed tomography (CT). Sigmoid colon perforation was also detected on follow-up CT. Laparoscopic low anterior resection was performed; there was a large hemat…

A 65-year-old man with bloody stools was diagnosed with sigmoid colon cancer on colonoscopy. A preoperative barium enema and a computed tomography colonography scan showed a medial displacement of his descending colon. The preoperative clinical diagnosis was stage cT1 colon cancer, N0, M0, cStage I . Laparoscopic sigmoidectomy was performed. We found adhesions between the descending colon mesentery and the pelvic wall, and noted that the descending colon was not fused with the retroperitoneum and was shifted to the midline. The patient was diagnosed with persistent descending mesocolon (PDM). …

A uterus-like mass is a rare, benign extra-uterine tumour composed of smooth muscle and endometrium. The majority of uterus-like masses occur in the ovary. Rarely, uterus-like masses occur in the broad ligament, small bowel, small bowel mesentery or uterine cervix. Here, we report a case of a uterus-like mass in the sigmoid mesocolon. A well-defined, markedly enhanced soft-tissue mass with central cystic change and haemorrhage was observed on CT. The current report describes the CT characteristics of this sigmoid mesocolon uterus-like mass together with the differential diagnoses.

BACKGROUND: Complete mesocolon excision (CME) and D3-lymphadenectomy concepts have gained popularity for the surgical treatment of right colon cancer in comparison to the conventional laparoscopic right hemicolectomy (CLRH). The rationale of CME is to dissect the embryological planes between the mesenteric plane and the parietal fascia to remove the mesentery within a complete envelope of mesenteric fascia and visceral peritoneum that contains lymph nodes, the central vascular ligation, and adequate bowel length to remove involved pericolic lymph nodes in the longitudinal direction, having as …

The case of a patient with surgically proven internal herniation of a loop of ileum through the sigmoid mesocolon is described. This 66-year-old man presented clinically with acute lower abdominal pain and an elevated white blood cell count. A computed tomography (CT) scan showed a thickened bowel loop with "bird-beak" appearance in the pelvis, centered towards the medial side and lying aside the effaced sigmoid colon. We think this CT picture is highly suggestive of internal herniation of the ileum through the sigmoid mesocolon, which is a rare clinical entity.

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows: To evaluate the benefits and harms of complete mesocolon excision (CME) compared to conventional colectomy in people undergoing surgery for resectable colon cancer, focusing on survival, recurrence, postoperative complications, and quality of life.
