Prostatitis is a common condition that is associated with a poor quality of life. A recent National Institutes of Health Consensus Panel classified prostatitis into the categories of acute bacterial, chronic bacterial, chronic nonbacterial, and asymptomatic. Bacterial prostatitis is usually caused by Escherichia coli and other gram-negative bacteria, but it is not frequently caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus infections are increasing. Moreover, 2 cases of methicillin-resistant S. aureus prostatic abscesses have been reported. We describe what w

Staphylococcus aureus is both a frequent commensal and a leading cause of endocarditis, bacteremia, osteomyelitis and skin and soft tissue infections and device-related infections. We performed this minireview to summarize the prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus among clinical samples and estimate the proportion of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The prevalence of Staphylococcus aureus among clinical isolates in Nepal is 34.5%. On average, the proportion of multi-drug resistance in Staphylococcus aureus is 57.1%. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus accounts for a total of

IMPORTANCE: Although classically thought to be primarily a nosocomial infection, the incidence of community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is rising. In this series we report 3 cases of community-acquired MRSA acute dacryoadenitis in adults presenting within a 3-week period.
OBSERVATIONS: All cases presented with pain and periocular erythema increasing over approximately 1 week. An S-shaped lid deformity was evident, and 2 of the 3 cases demonstrated multiple pustules/abscesses in the region of the lacrimal gland that were expressing purulent fluid into the superi

Staphylococcus pseudintermedius is an important opportunistic pathogen of companion animals, especially dogs. Since 2006 there has been a significant emergence of methicillin-resistant S. pseudintermedius (MRSP) mainly due to clonal spread. This article reviews research on MRSP with a focus on occurrence, methods used for identification, risk factors for colonization and infection, zoonotic potential and control options. Potential areas for future research are also discussed.

Methicillin-resistant staphylococci are mostly resistant not only to all beta-lactams but also to a wide range of other antibiotics, and have emerged as major nosocomial pathogens during the past two decades. Considerable variations in the prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) exist between institutions and between geographic areas. In Europe, in general, a north-south gradient is observed, MRSA strains being rare in Scandinavian hospitals (<2%) and far more prevalent in Mediterranean hospitals (>40%). Whether low or high, the rates of MRSA prevalence in European cou

Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) are resistant to all beta-lactams, and in more than 90% to ciprofloxacin and in 50-60% also to other groups of antibiotics, glycopeptides, quinupristin and linezolid excluded. A special problem is posed by glycopeptide intermediate susceptible S. aureus (GISA) which are until now rate in Germany, By molecular typing epidemic MRSSA can be identified which have a pronounced capacity for intra- and interhospital spread. MRSA are not more but also not less virulent than sensitive S. aureus.

This study was carried out at the Fann University Hospital Center in Dakar, Senegal between 1994 and 1996. The purpose was to assess the prevalence of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and to propose alternative treatments. A total of 149 stains of Staphylococcus aureus were isolated from a variety of clinical specimens. Sensitivity to various antibiotics was tested by the disc diffusion technique (anti-biogram). Resistance to methicillin was evaluated by the oxacillin disc diffusion technique on Mueller-Hinton agar containing 5% NaCl. The prevalence of methicillin resistance was 66.

Staphylococcus aureus (SA) is among the most important causes of skin infections. The incidence of Methicillin-resistant SA (MRSA) strains isolated from skin and skin structure infections was about 20-40%. In deep-seated pyoderma such as furuncle and furunculosis, MRSA was more frequently isolated than in other type of infectious diseases of the skin. But the incidence was gradually increasing. As to coagulase typing, type IV was most frequently isolated in MRSA. The damaged skin is easily colonized by high numbers of SA on its surface and within hair follicles. Through the indwelling catheter

Blepharoconjunctivitis caused by methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus epidermidis occurred in two hospitalized patients, a 74-year-old man and a 19-year-old man. Both strains were resistant to multiple courses of topical antibiotic therapy. Successful treatment in both cases depended upon antibiotic sensitivity testing. These methicillin-resistant strains of S. epidermidis, like methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus, demonstrated almost complete cross-resistance to cephalosporins despite apparent sensitivity on Kirby-Bauer disk sensitivity testing. Topical vancomyci

Staphylococcus aureus isolates resistant to several antimicrobials have been gradually emerged since the beginning of the antibiotic era. Consequently, the first isolation of methicillin-resistant S. aureus occurred in 1960, which was described a few years later in Chile. Currently, S. aureus resistant to antistaphylococcal penicillins is endemic in Chilean hospitals and worldwide, being responsible for a high burden of morbidity and mortality. This resistance is mediated by the expression of a new transpeptidase, named PBP2a or PBP2', which possesses lower affinity for the β-lactam antibiotic

All clinical methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates examined so far contain the mecA gene, a 2130bp stretch of DNA of non-staphylococcal origin which, together with a larger block (up to 40-60 Kb) of 'foreign' DNA, is incorporated into the staphylococcal chromosome. mecA encodes for the 78 Kd penicillin-binding protein (PBP) 2A, which has very low affinity for beta-lactam antibiotics. The sequence of the mecA gene contains structural motifs characteristic of cell wall synthetic transpeptidases. It is generally assumed that the mecA gene product (PBP 2A) acts as a surrogate

Staphylococcus aureus is a major pathogen both within hospitals and in the community. Methicillin, a beta-lactam antibiotic, acts by inhibiting penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) that are involved in the synthesis of peptidoglycan, an essential mesh-like polymer that surrounds the cell. S. aureus can become resistant to methicillin and other beta-lactam antibiotics through the expression of a foreign PBP, PBP2a, that is resistant to the action of methicillin but which can perform the functions of the host PBPs. Methicillin-resistant S. aureus isolates are often resistant to other classes of an

Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains are among the most common nosocomial pathogens. The most significant mechanism of resistance to methicillin in this-species is the acquisition of a genetic determinant (mecA gene). However, resistance seems to have a more complex molecular basis, since additional chromosomal material is involved in such resistance. Besides, overproduction of penicillinase and/or alterations in the PBPs can contribute to the formation of resistance phenotypes. Genetic and environmental factors leading to MRSA are reviewed.

We have compared methicillin-resistant (Mcr) Staphylococcus aureus isolates from Australia, the UK and the USA with regard to chromosomal inserts of the macrolides-lincosamides-streptogramin B (MLS)-resistance transposon Tn554. The American isolates were known to have a distinctive Tn554 insert, designated insert 6, which was closely associated epidemiologically with the methicillin-resistance phenotype. Southern blots of DNA from Australian and London, UK Mcr isolates were hybridized with a range of probes related to Tn554. The isolates had similar or identical Tn554 inserts, and we consider

The in vitro susceptibility to cephalothin and cefuroxime of 195 isolates of methicillin-resistant coagulase-negative staphylococci was determined by the agar-diffusion test, using 7.5% NaCl-supplemented agar. The distribution of the inhibition zone diameters for isolates of S. epidermidis (S. biotype 1) as well as for S. haemolyticus (S. biotype 4) was trimodal. While 4% of the isolates were found susceptible to cefuroxime, 39% of the S. epidermidis/S. hominis (S. biotype 1) isolates and 34% of the S. haemolyticus (S. biotype 4) isolates were found susceptible to cephalothin by this method.
