An anaerobic stable mixed culture dominated by bacteria belonging to the genera Dehalobacterium, Acetobacterium, Desulfovibrio, and Wolinella was used as a model to study the microbial interactions during DCM degradation. Extraction studies on butyl- and octyltins were conducted with three poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) product types: clear food container, rigid pipe and flexible membrane. Three solvents, tetrahydrofuran, xylene and methylene chloride were evaluated for extraction efficiency. An analytical method for determining butyltin chlorides in air at low nanogram-per-cubic-meter levels was developed. Butyltin chlorides investigated were mono-n-butyltin trichloride (MBTC), di-n-butyltin dichloride (DBTC), and tri-n-butyltin chloride (TBTC). These tin chlorides were trapped on cartridges packed with Porapak-N, eluted with methylene chloride containing 0.3% HCl, hydridized with sodium borohydride, and analyzed by capillary gas chromatography with flame photometric detection. On the basis of a 20 m3 sample, a detection limit of 0.05 ng/m3 can be achieved.

A simple and novel method for the synthesis of novel 1,3-dioxepine-fused (tricyclic) bispyrazoles is described. It involves a Cs2CO3-mediated O-alkylation of readily available pyrazolone derivatives with dichloromethane as the methylene source followed by PhI(OAc)2-mediated intramolecular oxidative biheteroaryl coupling under mild conditions. This scalable protocol was applied for the preparation of valuable and novel 1,3-dioxepine-fused (tricyclic) bispyrazoles that could find applications in medicinal or material chemistry.
