PURPOSE: To describe the clinical characteristics, diagnosis, treatment, and visual outcome of 61 cases of Fusarium keratitis in Mexico.
METHODS: Retrospective, comparative study of 61 patients with clinically and culture-confirmed Fusarium keratitis, who were attended at an eye hospital in Mexico City from 1981 to 2001.

Rabies in dogs was unknown in the Americas before the arrival of the Spanish "Conquistadores". Until the mid-1980s rabies in animals and, in turn in humans, changed little from year to year, with the number of dog vaccinations reported annually rarely reaching one million. In Mexico, the national rabies control programme using mass parenteral vaccination of dogs started in 1990 with about seven million dogs vaccinated the same year. Coccidioidomycosis, also known as San Joaquin Valley Fever, is an endemic mycosis restricted to the American deserts, caused by the ascomycete Coccidioides spp. In 2000 it was estimated that more than 100,000 cases of the disease took place in the United States, and that these numbers have been rising over time. OBJECTIVE: To review the Mexican studies published in the last 15 years on diabetes mellitus (DM) and pregnancy.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We found five descriptive studies on DM and pregnancy and six on the detection of gestational diabetes (GDM) in normal pregnant women using the oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT).

Tuberculosis (TB) still is an important health problem in Mexico. According to reported figures, an excess in the number of cases has occurred during recent years, mainly among young adults of both sexes. The present estimated rate of TB is 51.7 cases/100,000 inhabitants. This is the most frequent endemic infection among AIDS patients, ranking third among infectious diseases after candidiasis and P. carinii pneumoniae. In Mexico, scorpionism is an endemic public health problem. The exact number of human accidents is unknown, but partial statistics suggests numbers close to 200,000 per year. The documented number of fatality cases is in the order of 310 people per year. We currently use horse antiserum in patients who show a clear picture of intoxication. Our personal experience in treating 38,068 people, from which over 20,000 received serotherapy, shows that the antiserum is very effective, in that none of the patients died.

The seroprevalence of cysticercosis indicate that there is a high risk of contact with Taenia solium in Mexico, including both genders and all regions, socioeconomic group, and ages. An analysis of the transmission dynamics of rubella in Mexico based upon notified cases during 1983-1990 is presented. It is observed, for the first time, that the force of infection in the age-group of 15-44 years old and the average age of the infection at the national level show a slight increase simultaneously.
