A 63-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with fever and cough. Candidemia was diagnosed by blood culture and culture of IVH catheter. Although, the patient was treated with fluconazole, clinical symptoms and chest radiographic findings worsened. After micafungin was replaced with fluconazole, her symptoms, chest radiographic findings improved and stabilized. It is suggested that micafungin is useful for the treatment of candidemia associated with Candida parapsilosis.

We tested the efficacy of micafungin (FK) alone or in combination with other antifungals against systemic murine aspergillosis. FK alone at 10 mg/kg of body weight/dose prolonged survival (P = 0.01) and reduced CFU in the brain and kidney. Combination therapy that used suboptimal FK with amphotericin B or itraconazole prolonged survival. Although no survivors were free of infection, no antagonism was seen. Nikkomycin Z with FK showed significantly greater potency (P < 0.01) than either alone.

Little is known about the side effects of micafungin in extremely low birth weight infants. In a retrospective single-center study, 19 extremely low birth weight infants were analyzed for micafungin efficacy and safety. At a mean±standard deviation daily dosage of 7.5 ± 2.0 mg/kg, no clinically relevant side effects were observed. A significant increase of liver enzymes was reversible after treatment.
