Cefprozil is a new orally active cephalosporin which is undergoing in vitro and in vivo evaluations. Using the standard agar dilution method we compared the in vitro activity of this drug with other oral cephalosporins and ciprofloxacin against 637 recent clinical isolates from the Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital, Taiwan. Against Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, cefprozil showed good activity, inhibiting over 80% of these isolates at 8 mg/l. Like other oral drugs of its class, it had little activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter spp. Against Haemophilus influe

One hundred and five enterobacterial isolates from urinary tract infections were examined for ampicillin-susceptibility by measurement of molecular hydrogen production with a palladium metal oxide semi-conductor (Pd-MOS sensor). Eighty-one per cent of hydrogen producing strains could be placed in the same susceptibility groups as recorded by disc-diffusion tests. However, it was harder to separate susceptible from intermediate types than to determine resistance. In all but five strains the hydrogen production allowed determination of viability within 5 h.

The search for new compounds with antifungal activity is accelerating due to rising yeast and fungal resistance to commonly prescribed drugs. Among the molecules being investigated, plant lectins can be highlighted. The present work shows the potential of six plant lectins which were tested in vitro against yeasts of medical importance, Candida albicans, Candida tropicalis, Candida parapsilosis, Cryptococcus gattii, Cryptococcus neoformans, Malassezia pachydermatis, Rhodotorula sp. and Trichosporon sp. Broth microdilution susceptibility testing was performed in accordance with standard protoco

Although antimicrobial resistance among bacteria continues to increase and to be a clinical problem, the beta-hemolytic streptococci have remained remarkably susceptible to most antibiotics. For example, there has not been a single documented instance of a clinical isolate of a penicillin-resistant group A streptococcus. Moreover, available data indicate that the minimal inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of penicillin for group A streptococci have not changed during the past 4, decades. In one study, the MIC90 for more than 300 strains of group A streptococci was only 0.012 microgram/mL. Resist

Based on the difficulties experienced in the treatment of chromoblastomycosis, 12 primary human isolates of F. pedrosoi, were tested for their in vitro susceptibility to various antimycotics. We adapted the recommendations of the NCCLS for yeasts and followed the indications for mold testing from other authors in order to determine their MIC's and the MLC's. It was found that a significant proportion of the isolates were resistant to 3 of the 4 antimycotics tested, as revealed by high MIC values, as follows: 33% were resistant to amphotericin B (AMB), 58.3% to 5 fluocytosine (5 FC) and 66.7% t

The genus enterococcus has 12 species of which, E faecalis and E faecium are most important in human infections. A progressive resistance to penicillin and ampicillin has been detected in these species. The aim of this work was to identify Enterococcus species isolated in a hospital and to study their antimicrobial susceptibility. We studied 209 Enterococcus species coming from patients admitted to a public hospital. Their susceptibility to penicillin, ampicillin, imipenem, vancomycin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, ciprofloxacin, gentamicin and streptomycin was determined with the agar diluti

Vancomycin is a glycopeptide antibiotic that is active against staphylococci, streptococci, and other gram-positive bacteria. It is the drug of choice for the treatment of infections due to methicillin-resistant staphylococci, Corynebacterium jeikeium, and multiply resistant strains of Streptococcus pneumoniae. Vancomycin is an alternative treatment for serious staphylococcal and streptococcal infections, including endocarditis, when allergy precludes the use of penicillins and cephalosporins. Vancomycin is bactericidal against most strains of staphylococci and nonenterococcal streptococci. Al

Identification and in vitro susceptibility testing of fungi is necessary mainly in immunocompromised patients. So, after a survey of the epidemiological results, the authors specified the indications of susceptibility tests; their advantages and difficulties and the lots of variations related to the fungus, drug, medium and technic. The authors compared the more recent methods from their experience: susceptibility to 6 antifungals (amphotericin B, flucytosine and 4 imidazoles) was estimated in 122 yeast strains isolated from deep specimens by 5 marketed technics. They got a good correlation be

Norfloxacin is an oral fluoroquinolone antimicrobial agent recently released for the treatment of uncomplicated and complicated urinary tract infections. The drug antagonizes DNA gyrase, an enzyme essential for bacterial DNA replication. Norfloxacin is more potent and broader in spectrum than the earlier developed analogue, nalidixic acid, and is active in vitro against virtually all bacterial pathogens causing urinary tract and gastrointestinal infections, aerobic gram-negative bacilli causing sepsis in neutropenic patients, and Neisseria gonorrhoeae. The drug is administered orally twice dai

During the period 1966-77, 24 strains of Flavobacterium odoratum were identified from among strains of Gram-negative, non-fermentative bacteria submitted to the National Collection of Type Cultures for computer-assisted identification. The F. odoratum strains showed resistance to therapeutic levels of gentamicin, tobramycin, amikacin, and carbenicillin as well as to several other antimicrobial agents generally useful in the treatment of infections caused by Gram-negative, non-fermentative bacteria. Two strains isolated from amputation stumps and another three strains isolated in significant nu

A number of immunological and non-immunological techniques have been recently used to detect soluble microbial substances in body fluids of patients with acute meningitis, bacteremia, and lobar pneumonia. By the immunological methods capsular highly polymerized polisaccharide group- or type-specific antigens of the most common C. N. S. pathogens (N. meningitidis A, B, and C; Str. pneumoniae, H. influenzae type b, E. coli K1, mucoid Pseudomonas, Cryptococcus neoformans) can be detected and quantitated in spinal fluids, sera, urine and other fluids specimens from meningitic patients. BACKGROUND: Clostridioides difficile (C. difficile) is one of the primary pathogens responsible for infectious diarrhea. Antibiotic treatment failure, occurring in about 30% of patients, and elevated rates of antibiotic resistance pose a major challenge for therapy. Reinfection often occurs by isolates that produce biofilm, a protective barrier impermeable to antibiotics. We explored the association between antibiotic resistance (in planktonic form) and biofilm-production in 123 C. difficile clinical isolates.
RESULTS: Overall, 66 (53.6%) out of 123 isolates produced a biofilm, with most of t
