Bleeding frequency of patients taking ticagrelor, aspirin, clopidogrel, and dual antiplatelet therapy after tooth extraction and minor oral surgery.

BACKGROUND: Perioperative bleeding complications of ticagrelor, a newer oral antiplatelet, has not been studied in dentistry. Studies about bleeding status after oral surgical procedures in patients receiving continued antiplatelet therapy are also limited. We investigated the effects of continuing aspirin, clopidogrel, ticagrelor, or dual antiplatelet therapy on the frequency of bleeding events in patients undergoing tooth extractions or minor oral surgery. METHODS: In this retrospective study, patient demographic characteristics, medical history, type of antiplatelet therapy, dental procedu

Minor Hand Surgery Procedures.

While hand surgery has developed as its own unique subspecialty since the mid-twentieth century, other providers, especially those practicing in emergency or more rural settings, may be called upon to perform minor surgical procedures of the hand. With understanding of the relevant anatomy and basic surgical principles, minor hand procedures can be done safely and effectively. This article will discuss common hand injuries and pathologies and their respective management.

Lack of complications in minor skin lesion excisions in patients taking aspirin or warfarin products.

Many patients undergoing surgical procedures take medications that influence the coagulation system. It is common practice to discontinue the use of aspirin and warfarin products 7 to 10 days before any major surgical procedure. However, there is some controversy as to whether these medications should be discontinued for minor dermatological procedures. Our aim was to study the incidence of complications in patients receiving aspirin or warfarin and undergoing minor dermatological procedures. Two thousand three hundred twenty-six patients, operated on by a single surgeon, were studied for comp

Surgery in haemophilia patients with inhibitors, with special emphasis on orthopaedics: Madrid experience.

We report on a series of 92 surgical procedures (90 patients). It includes 35 orthopaedic procedures (33 patients) and 57 non-orthopaedic procedures (57 patients). The orthopaedic procedures include 27 radiosynovectomies (minor surgery) and eight major orthopaedic procedures. The non-orthopaedic procedures include 52 minor interventions and five major procedures. The average age of patients was 34 years (range: 8-56), and the average follow-up time was 3 years (range: 1-6). Of the 92 surgical procedures, 42 were performed with activated prothrombin complex concentrates [factor eight inhibitor

Minor and intermediate surgeries in lung transplant recipients.

BACKGROUND: Only limited data exist regarding the incidence and outcome of surgical procedures following lung transplantation (LTX). METHODS: A retrospective analysis of surgical procedures performed in all LTX patients (n = 250) between 1997 and 2008. RESULTS: Of 250 patients who underwent LTX, 68 (27.2%) required 154 surgical procedures. Mean age was 53 ± 13 yr. Mean interval between LTX and surgery was 41 ± 40 months. Mean follow-up was 21 ± 9.4 months. Fourteen (9.1%) emergency operations were performed. Sixty patients (39%) underwent general anesthesia, 12 (7.8%) regional anesthesia, an

WALANT Hand and Upper Extremity Procedures Performed With Minor Field Sterility Are Associated With Low Infection Rates.

BACKGROUND: The use of minor field sterility in hand/upper extremity cases has been shown to improve workflow efficiency while maintaining patient safety. As this finding has been limited to specific procedures, we investigated the safety of performing a wide array of hand/upper extremity procedures outside the main operating room using minimal field sterility with Wide-Awake Local Anaesthesia No Tourniquet (WALANT) anaesthesia by evaluating superficial and deep infection rates across a diverse series of cases. METHODS: This study was a case series conducted between October 2017 and June 2020

Comparison of Safety and Insurance Payments for Minor Hand Procedures Across Operative Settings.

IMPORTANCE: Surgical procedures can be performed in different settings, but the association between the operative setting and patient safety … ce setting is safe and less costly compared with ambulatory and hospital-based operations. Shifting minor surgical procedures to the office setting may lead to substantial cost savings for payers and patients without compromising care quality.

Serum myoglobin and creatine kinase following surgery.

Serum myoglobin (by radioimmunoassay) and creatine kinase were measured for up to 7 days in 30 patients following surgical procedures, including total hip replacement and bilateral subcostal abdominal incisions. Serum myoglobin reached a maximum of 1390 micrograms litre-1 (median 345 micrograms litre-1 for major surgery patients) on the first postoperative day but levels were still elevated by day 7 in some patients. Creatine kinase reached a maximum of 1339 i.u. litre-1 at day 2 (median 422 i.u. litre-1 for major surgery patients), generally peaking 1 day after myoglobin in individual patient
