BACKGROUND: Females and minorities have been underrepresented in clinical research despite legislative efforts, including in hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) and psoriasis (PsO) clinical trials.
OBJECTIVE: To identify differences in demographic breakdowns of HS and PsO patients between health care settings to uncover any causative health disparities.
METHODS: This study reports racial, ethnic, and sex of HS and PsO patient populations across the emergency department (ED), inpatient, clinical trial, and registry settings. In addition, 95% confidence intervals are used as proxies of statistical s

Incarceration is considerably more prevalent among sexual and gender minority persons (SGM) than among the general population. Once behind bars, they are at the greatest risk for health-related harms. Although a growing number of studies have assessed health disparities produced by mass incarceration, scholars are yet to systematically assess the health consequences of incarceration on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. We invite public health scholars to study the effects of incarceration on health in the SGM population and provide a roadmap to aid these research efforts. Fi

OBJECTIVES: To determine the influences of victimization experience and familial factors on the association between sexual minority status and psychological health outcomes among adolescents.
METHODS: We used data from the Child and Adolescent Twin Study in Sweden, a prospective, population-based study of all twins born in Sweden since 1992. Cross-sectional analyses included individuals who completed assessments at age 18 years (n = 4898) from 2000 to 2013. We also compared psychological health among sexual minority adolescents and their nonminority co-twins.
RESULTS: Sexual minority adolesc

Although there is substantial literature about sexual minority women's mental health and use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs (ATOD), only recently has attention been focused on chronic physical health disorders thought to stem from stress and exposure to ATOD use. The most extensively studied aspect of physical health has been weight, with the majority of studies reporting higher prevalence of overweight and obesity. In addition, many studies report higher levels of stressful experiences in both childhood and adulthood for sexual minority women. In this paper, the hypothesized relationshi

CONTEXT: Since the beginning of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization intervention in Kosovo in June 1999, few objective data have been available on relevant health indicators for the Serbian ethnic minority in Kosovo.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of undernutrition among Serbian adults aged 60 years or older and psychiatric morbidity among the adult Serbian population in Kosovo.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A systematic random sample survey of 212 households was conducted between September 27 and October 2, 1999, in Pristina, the capital city, and in 10 towns in the rural mu

1. Minority workers are overrepresented in the most hazardous jobs and, as a result, are at high risk of developing occupational diseases. 2. Due to various social and economic factors, minority workers with occupational diseases are less likely than white workers to come to health care attention and be correctly diagnosed as having an occupational disease. 3. Occupational health clinics and providers need to discuss options for treatment clearly with the client and, when appropriate, be persistent in negotiating with employers to reduce or eliminate harmful exposures, while remaining sensitiv

Sexual minority adolescents (SMAs) are at increased risk for adverse mental health outcomes (e.g., posttraumatic stress and depression symptoms, suicidal ideation) compared to heterosexual adolescents. Most research has focused on the relationship between minority stress (e.g., discrimination) and mental health among SMAs. However, the extent to which minority stress and other forms of victimization, including sexual victimization, simultaneously influence SMAs' mental health is understudied. Therefore, the goal of the current study was to examine the relative and interactive effects of minori

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations experience significant health disparities worldwide, many of which are exacerbated by barriers encountered within healthcare systems. This scoping review aims to map the existing literature on integrating SGM health into medical education, identify barriers to implementation, and examine the impact of educational interventions on learner outcomes. Scoping review was conducted in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar were searched for studies published between January 2010 and December 2024 using terms related

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Advances in HIV testing, prevention, and treatment, alongside increased awareness and harm reduction efforts for substance use disorder (SUD) have improved care and treatment access over the past decade. However, racial and ethnic minorities with SUD and HIV or at risk for HIV still face disproportionately high health disparities. Understanding and addressing the reasons behind these disparities is crucial.
RECENT FINDINGS: Structural and systemic barriers continue to negatively impact minoritized communities, due to lack of access to care, mistrust, and feelings of ostraci

PURPOSE: Adolescence is a phase when young people begin to explore their gender identity. Adolescents who identify as a gender minority are vulnerable to experiencing mental health problems due to stigmatization of their identity.
METHODS: A population-wide study compared gender minority and cisgender students (aged 13-14 years) self-reported symptoms of probable depression, anxiety, and conduct disorder, and auditory hallucinations, including the distress and frequency of hallucinations.
RESULTS: Gender minority students compared to cisgender students had four times the odds of reporting a

Cardiovascular disease (in particular, CHD) is the leading cause of death in the United States for Americans of both sexes and of all racial and ethnic backgrounds. African Americans have the highest overall CHD mortality rate and the highest out-of-hospital coronary death rate of any ethnic group in the United States, particularly at younger ages. Contributors to the earlier onset of CHD and excess CHD deaths among African Americans include a high prevalence of coronary risk factors, patient delays in seeking medical care, and disparities in health care. The clinical spectrum of acute and chr

Examined the utilization rates, treatment dropout rates, and length of treatment for minority adolescents in the mental health care system. Data from the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health from 1983 to 1988 were used. Ss were 853 African Americans, 704 Asian Americans, 964 Hispanics, and 670 whites. Analyses showed that Asian Americans and Hispanics are underrepresented in existing public mental health facilities while African Americans are overrepresented. For dropout rates, no ethnic differences are found between minority groups and whites; but, for length of treatment, Asian Ame

INTRODUCTION: Social and structural determinants of health (SDOH) significantly influence the management and outcomes of vascular surgical patients. Large databases, such as the Society for Vascular Surgery-Vascular Quality Initiative (SVS-VQI), are important platforms for conducting health disparities research. Moreover, evaluating the SVS-VQI registry variables is crucial to understanding how well it supports this purpose. This study reviews the extent to which current VQI variables facilitate minority health and health disparities research.
METHODS: A scoping review was conducted from VQI …

This study explored differences among older adults in mental health by sexual minority status. Data came from the 2021 U.S. National Health Interview Survey. The study sample included older adults (or those aged ≥50 years, N = 15,559), and of those, two percent (n = 380) self-identified as lesbian, gay, or bisexual (LGB). Older LGB adults had significantly higher odds of reporting a diagnosis of depression and anxiety and experiencing serious psychological distress than older non-LGB adults. Additionally, older LGB adults reported higher odds of experiencing depression and anxiety more frequen

BACKGROUND: Sexual minority adolescents are more likely to have mental health problems, adverse social environments, and negative health outcomes compared with their heterosexual counterparts. There is a paucity of up-to-date population-level estimates of the extent of risk across these domains in the UK. We analysed outcomes across mental health, social environment, and health-related domains in sexual minority adolescents compared with their heterosexual counterparts in a large, contemporary national cohort.
METHODS: The Millennium Cohort Study (MCS) is a birth cohort study in the UK follow

INTRODUCTION: Sexual minority women represent one of the highest-risk groups for hazardous drinking and comorbid mental health problems (eg, depression, anxiety). Research has identified cognitive (eg, expectations of rejection), affective (eg, emotion dysregulation) and behavioural (eg, avoidant coping) pathways through which minority stress (eg, stigma) places sexual minority women at disproportionate risk of hazardous drinking and comorbid depression/anxiety; yet no evidence-based interventions have been tested to address these pathways in this population. This article describes the design

OBJECTIVE: LGBTQ-affirmative cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) addresses the adverse impacts of minority stress. However, this treatment has rarely been tested in randomized controlled trials with LGBTQ youth and never using an asynchronous online platform for broad reach. This study examined the feasibility, acceptability, preliminary efficacy, and multi-level stigma moderators of LGBTQ-affirmative internet-based CBT (ICBT).
METHOD: Participants were 120 LGBTQ youth (ages 16-25; 37.5% transgender or non-binary; 75.8% assigned female at birth; 49.2% non-Latino White) living across 38 U.S. st

Sexual minorities (mostly heterosexual, bisexual, lesbian/gay) are more likely than heterosexuals to have adverse mental health, which may be related to minority stress. We used longitudinal data from 1461 sexual minority women and men, aged 22-30 years, from Wave 2010 of the Growing Up Today Study, to examine associations between sexual minority stressors and mental health. We hypothesized that sexual minority stressors (earlier timing of sexual orientation developmental milestones categorized into early adolescence, middle adolescence, late adolescence/young adulthood; greater sexual orienta

Guatemalan gay and bisexual men, men who have sex with men (MSM), and transgender persons carry disproportionate burden of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections compared with other Guatemalan subgroups. However, little is known about the determinants of sexual health to inform health promotion and disease prevention interventions among these sexual minorities. We sought to explore sexual health and HIV risk among Guatemalan sexual minorities, using a community-based participatory research approach. We conducted 8 focus groups (n = 87 participants total) and 10 individual in-depth inter

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has been shown to worsen mental health outcomes, particularly among minority youths. However, few studies have examined whether neighborhood composition-specifically greater co-ethnic density, which has been linked to better mental health in other contexts-might buffer against these negative effects. Furthermore, existing studies linking neighborhood ethnic composition to health tend to be based in the U.S., where racial/ethnic clustering is intrinsically intertwined with racial discrimination, making it hard to unpack the impact of neighborhood composition on
