A survey of human exposures to molybdenum, a trace metal essential for almost all forms of life, was made by analyzing human tissues of 381 subjects from around the world by emission spectroscopy, and foods and beverages by a colorimetric method. Molybdenum was present in all human livers, kidneys and adrenals examined. Total body content of United States subjects was less than 9 mg and most organs and tissues contained little. Unlike other essential trace metals, mean concentrations of molybdenum in liver and kidney were relatively low in the newborn, rising to a peak in the second decade of …

Molybdenum cofactor (MoCo) deficiency is a rare, autosomal-recessive disorder, mainly caused by mutations in MOCS1 (MoCo deficiency type A) or MOCS2 (MoCo deficiency type B) genes; the absence of active MoCo results in a deficiency in all MoCo-dependent enzymes. Patients with MoCo deficiency present with neonatal seizures, feeding difficulties, severe developmental delay, brain atrophy and early childhood death. Although substitution therapy with cyclic pyranopterin monophosphate (cPMP) has been successfully used in both Mocs1 knockout mice and in patients with MoCo deficiency type A, there is…

In 1930, Bortels showed that molybdenum is necessary for nitrogen fixation in Acetobacter, and in 1939 Arnon and Stout reported that molybdenum is essential for life in higher plants. Nitrogenase is the nitrogen-fixing enzyme complex, while nitrate reductase requires molybdenum for its activity. Molybdenum occurs in the earth crust with an abundance of 1.0-1.4 mg/kg. The molybdenum content of the vegetation is determined by the amount of this element in the soil and its pH-value. The weathering soils of granite, porphyry, gneiss and Rotliegendes produce a molybdenum-rich vegetation. Significan…

Macroscopic solid-liquid synergistic superlubricity based on two-dimensional (2D) materials and liquid molecules integrates the low interlayer shear strength of 2D materials with advantages of liquid superlubricity, significantly reducing friction and wear in industrial applications. However, the low load-bearing capacity of single 2D material and the unclear synergistic superlubricity mechanism severely constrain the design of long-lasting superlubricity systems. Herein, through innovatively introducing van der Waals interaction-induced molybdenum carbide/molybdenum disulfide (Mo2CTx/MoS2) he…

Molybdenum cofactor deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive disorder with devastating neurological manifestations, characterised by neonatal-onset encephalopathy mimicking hypoxic-ischaemic insult, intractable seizure, and feeding and respiratory difficulties. It is often fatal in the early life. We report an affected 8-year-old boy, who presented with severe neurological manifestations since birth, but without clinically-significant seizure. Molybdenum cofactor deficiency must be included in the differential diagnosis of patients presenting with unexplained encephalopathy in the newborn peri…

BACKGROUND: Molybdenum is an essential trace element and a component of xanthine oxidase, which catalyses the formation of urate. The toxicity of molybdenum in humans is considered to be low, but hyperuricaemia and gout-like symptoms have been observed sporadically.
METHODS: A case of hyperuricaemia and gouty arthritis in a young man with occupational exposure to molybdenum is described. Improvement during an exposure-free period was followed by a relapse after a reconstruction designed to quantify his molybdenum exposure.
CONCLUSION: This case seems to represent the first observation of gou…

BACKGROUND: The importance of molybdenum for plant growth is disproportionate with respect to the absolute amounts required by most plants. Apart from Cu, Mo is the least abundant essential micronutrient found in most plant tissues and is often set as the base from which all other nutrients are compared and measured. Molybdenum is utilized by selected enzymes to carry out redox reactions. Enzymes that require molybdenum for activity include nitrate reductase, xanthine dehydrogenase, aldehyde oxidase and sulfite oxidase.
SCOPE: Loss of Mo-dependent enzyme activity (directly or indirectly throu…

Molybdenum is an essential trace element taking part in the active site of three human enzymes: xanthine oxidase, aldehyde oxidase and sulfite oxidase, playing a role in the detoxification of the organism and/or the production of important intermediary products. The perturbation of the first two enzymes has no established clinical consequence, but a decrease in activity of the third one is harmful for the organism, particularly the nervous system during pre- or post-natal development. The anomalies in the function of these enzymes are generally inherited and linked to the impaired production o…

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is an important biological signaling molecule and one of three established gasotransmitters. Upon oxidation, H2S can form reactive sulfur species (RSS) that play a central role in protein persulfidation. Here we report that a molybdenum tetrasulfide can react directly with hydrosulfide to form polysulfides and oxidize the Mo center. Specifically, [NBu4][TpMoS(S4)] reacts with 2 equiv of [NBu4][SH] to form [NBu4][TpMoS3]. Trapping experiments with BnBr confirm the formation of polysulfides, as evidenced by the direct trapping of Bn2S2. This work demonstrates new reaction …

1. Large doses of tungsten, administered to the chick either by injection or by feeding, increased tissue concentrations of tungsten and decreased tissue concentrations of molybdenum and tissue activities of xanthine dehydrogenase. 2. The rate of loss of large doses of tungsten from the liver occurred in an exponential manner with a half-life of 27 h. 3. When tungsten was administered to chicks fed on a semi-synthetic diet containing abnormally low concentrations of molybdenum, the activity of hepatic xanthine dehydrogenase was reduced to negligible levels. 4. The alterations in molybdenum met…

Biological nitrogen fixation, the conversion of atmospheric N2 to NH3, is an essential process in the global biogeochemical cycle of nitrogen that supports life on Earth. Most of the biological nitrogen fixation is catalyzed by the molybdenum nitrogenase, which contains at its active site one of the most complex metal cofactors known to date, the iron-molybdenum cofactor (FeMo-co). FeMo-co is composed of 7Fe, 9S, Mo, R-homocitrate, and one unidentified light atom. Here we demonstrate the complete in vitro synthesis of FeMo-co from Fe(2+), S(2-), MoO4(2-), and R-homocitrate using only purified …

Through an earth-abundant molybdenum-catalyzed, borrowing hydrogen coupling reaction, a simple and efficient synthesis of tetrahydroquinolines from (2-amino aryl) methanol and α-branched alcohols has been reported. The current methodology proceeds via an atom-efficient and step-economic pathway, along with no need for further reducing agent, broad substrate scope, and operational simplicity, providing a practical and important way for the smooth synthesis of these types of biologically relevant products.

Molybdenum disulfide-graphite intercalation compounds (MoS2-GICs), featuring lateral dimensions of several hundred nanometers and a thickness of one to two molybdenum disulfide layers, were synthesized via intercalation of molybdenum chloride into graphite followed by sulfidation with hydrogen sulfide within the graphite interlayers. The resulting MoS2-GIC catalysts demonstrated superior activity and selectivity for the hydrodesulfurization of dibenzothiophene, as well as enhanced activity for naphthalene hydrogenation, compared to molybdenum disulfide supported on graphite (MoS2/Gmix), when e…

We report on the theoretical prediction and experimental realization of new ternary zinc molybdenum nitride compounds. We used theory to identify previously unknown ternary compounds in the Zn-Mo-N systems, Zn3MoN4 and ZnMoN2, and to analyze their bonding environment. Experiments show that Zn-Mo-N alloys can form in broad composition range from Zn3MoN4 to ZnMoN2 in the wurtzite-derived structure, accommodating very large off-stoichiometry. Interestingly, the measured wurtzite-derived structure of the alloys is metastable for the ZnMoN2 stoichiometry, in contrast to the Zn3MoN4 stoichiometry, w…
