Cardiac morphogenesis--recent research advances.

It has been demonstrated recently that a specific region of neural crest contributes cells to the septa of the outflow tract of the heart. Removal of this region of cardiac neural crest prior to migration from the neural fold results in persistent truncus arteriosus in chick embryos. Removal of other regions of cranial neural crest results in double outlet right ventricle. Since double outlet right ventricle is produced by manipulation of noncardiac neural crest, this malformation is thought to be an indirect rather than direct effect of neural crest ablation. The cranial neural crest forms th

Mandibular morphogenesis and craniofacial malformations.

Four questions have been addressed in this review. What is morphogenesis? I conclude that morphogenesis is simply development or change of shape and distinguish morphogenesis both from differentiation and from growth, although predominant growth along one axis can alter shape. Morphogenesis can be considered at all levels from the molecule to the population. I concentrated on cells, tissues, and organs. How does the mandible develop? A brief overview of the origin, migration, and differentiation of the neural crest and other cells which constitute the mandible has been provided. How is mandibu…

[Human cervico-facial morphogenesis. Evaluation of acquired data and current outlook. Second part: cervical morphogenesis].

After having recalled the formation of the so-called "branchial" organisation, each component of the segmentary units constituting this organisation is analysed, as well as their particularities. This lead us to recognize the existence of only five branchial arches in the human embryo, without an intermediary arch between the fourth arch and the pulmonary arch. This question is moreover linked to the signification of the so-called "ultimobranchial" body, which must be connected with the fourth pharyngeal pouch. The question of cervical segmentation is inseparable from the question of cephalic

The Morphogenesis of Cranial Sutures in Zebrafish.

Using morphological, histological, and TEM analyses of the cranium, we provide a detailed description of bone and suture growth in zebrafish. Based on expression patterns and localization, we identified osteoblasts at different degrees of maturation. Our data confirm that, unlike in humans, zebrafish cranial sutures maintain lifelong patency to sustain skull growth. The cranial vault develops in a coordinated manner resulting in a structure that protects the brain. The zebrafish cranial roof parallels that of higher vertebrates and contains five major bones: one pair of frontal bones, one pair

Vascular morphogenesis in the zebrafish embryo.

During embryonic development, the vertebrate vasculature is undergoing vast growth and remodeling. Blood vessels can be formed by a wide spectrum of different morphogenetic mechanisms, such as budding, cord hollowing, cell hollowing, cell wrapping and intussusception. Here, we describe the vascular morphogenesis that occurs in the early zebrafish embryo. We discuss the diversity of morphogenetic mechanisms that contribute to vessel assembly, angiogenic sprouting and tube formation in different blood vessels and how some of these complex cell behaviors are regulated by molecular pathways.

Control of tooth morphogenesis by Runx2.

Odontogenesis is a complex process in which the interplay of signaling cascades of the epithelium and mesenchyme is critical. Evidence for t … d in regulating the induction of mesenchymal signaling back to the dental epithelium for epithelial morphogenesis. In addition, we discuss the role of the two major isoforms of Runx2, and other Runx family genes, in odontogenic processes.

[Morphogenesis of hydatic cyst of the liver].

The morphological features of 138 cysts of different size were studied in 107 patients with Echinococcosis of the liver aged 14-75 years (39 men and 68 women) in order to specify the morphogenesis of Echinococcus cyst. The content of 23 cysts looked like a jelly-like mass, in 10 of them there were scraps of degenerating chitin. In 26 cysts there were solitary daughter cysts, in 11 they were multiple. In 10 cysts there was a relatively large volume of turbid fluid. In 99 cases the content of the cyst was a colorless transparent fluid with the invariable chitin membrane. Enlargement of the fibro…

Tooth morphogenesis and the differentiation of ameloblasts.

All vertebrate organs are formed from several cell types, and it is currently believed that interactions between the different components constitute the most important mechanism in the regulation of organ morphogenesis. In developing teeth morphogenetic interactions occur between the epithelium covering the facial processes and the underlying neural crest-derived mesenchyme. Morphogenesis is accompanied by differentiation of the various dental cell types, including the ameloblasts. Although ameloblasts differentiate terminally and start the deposition of enamel matrix only after the completion…

[Characteristics of morphogenesis of cryptorchism in childhood].

The main morphological features of undescended testes in children of 2-14 years old were incomplete cytodifferentiation of Sertoli cells (absence of transition of Sa = Sb cells into Sc type), reduced number of spermatogonia and dystrophic changes in germ cells. Intense progressive sclerosis developed in the interstitium and walls of seminiferous tubules. The dark Sertoli cells were described as a distinct cell type for the first time. The results of the morphological study indicated that cryptorchism should be surgically corrected during the first two years of life.

[Morphogenesis of cystic abnormalities of the lung].

The material used was the pathomorphological studies of cystic developmental lung defects with consideration of X-ray and clinical data. In total 126 cases have been studied including: 72 cystic lung hypoplasias, 38 solitary cysts, 8 sequestrations, 8 bronchogenic cysts of mediastinum. Cystic hypoplasia revealed branching of cystic cavities and sometimes their connection with respiratory compartments. The other above mentioned defects reveal sometimes the connection between cysts, bronchi and respiratory compartments. Consequently with the formation of cystic developmental lung defects the dev

[Morphogenesis of congestive fibrosis of the liver].

Genesis of the muscatel-like fibrosis of the liver was studied on section and experimental material. The methods of histological, histochemical and electron microscopy analysis were used. It was established that the rise of pressure in the system of hepatic veins in chronic cardiac decompensation was accompanied by drastic venous congestion, hemorrhages and necrosis of hepacytes in the circumference of the central and collecting veins and along the lines of their junction which resulted in inversion of the hepatic lobes. In the zones of venous congestion pericentral fibrosis developed, which o

Morphogenesis and Topography of the Mesorectal Fascia.

Background: First described by Carl Toldt in the late 19th century, the mesorectum has since been a topic of anatomical and surgical debate. Its clinical importance was redefined by Heald's introduction of Total Mesorectal Excision (TME), nowadays the golden standard in oncologic rectal surgery. This study aims to elucidate the embryological development and adult anatomy of the mesorectum and the mesorectal fascia, with a focus on clinically significant relations, particularly the peritoneum, and components of the hypogastric plexuses. Methods: We performed anatomical dissections on four 12-15

A model for maxilloturbinate morphogenesis in seals.

The nasal cavities of mammals contain the maxilloturbinate bones, which are involved in reducing heat and water losses. The maxilloturbinates of Arctic seals develop into particularly elaborate labyrinthine patterns, which are well adapted to retain heat and moisture from exhaled gas. These structures develop prenatally and continue to grow postnatally. The developmental mechanism of labyrinthine patterning is unknown. Here we report a model of maxilloturbinate pattern formation in prenatal and juvenile seals based on a simple algorithmic description and three key parameters: target turbinate

Pancreas morphogenesis: Branching in and then out.

The pancreas of adult mammals displays a branched structure which transports digestive enzymes produced in the distal acini through a tree-like network of ducts into the duodenum. In contrast to several other branched organs, its branching patterns are not stereotypic. Moreover, the branches do not grow from dichotomic splitting of an initial stem but rather from the formation of microlumen in a mass of cells. These lumen progressively assemble into a hyperconnected network that refines into a tree by the time of birth. We review the cell remodeling events and the molecular mechanisms governin

Facial morphogenesis of the earliest europeans.

The modern human face differs from that of our early ancestors in that the facial profile is relatively retracted (orthognathic). This change in facial profile is associated with a characteristic spatial distribution of bone deposition and resorption: growth remodeling. For humans, surface resorption commonly dominates on anteriorly-facing areas of the subnasal region of the maxilla and mandible during development. We mapped the distribution of facial growth remodeling activities on the 900-800 ky maxilla ATD6-69 assigned to H. antecessor, and on the 1.5 My cranium KNM-WT 15000, part of an ass
