Extinction of the acoustic startle response in moths endemic to a bat-free habitat.

Most moths use ears solely to detect the echolocation calls of hunting, insectivorous bats and evoke evasive flight manoeuvres. This singularity of purpose predicts that this sensoribehavioural network will regress if the selective force that originally maintained it is removed. We tested this with noctuid moths from the islands of Tahiti and Moorea, sites where bats have never existed and where an earlier study demonstrated that the ears of endemic species resemble those of adventives although partially reduced in sensitivity. To determine if these moths still express the anti-bat defensive b…

The Sting of a White Flannel Moth Caterpillar (Norape ovina).

The purpose of this report is to describe a case of urticarial dermatitis, or erucism, caused by the white flannel moth caterpillar (Norape ovina) in central Virginia. Many caterpillars are known to cause erucism, with the puss caterpillar (Megalopyge opercularis) being the most reported culprit in the United States. White flannel moth caterpillars are expected to cause erucism as they belong to the same family as the puss caterpillar (Megalopygidae) and have similar venom-containing hairs, but no reports of the reaction or clinical course have been documented in the medical literature. A subj

Respiratory and skin allergy to Galleria mellonella (bee moth).

This case report describes a patient with bee moth-induced rhinoconjunctivitis, asthma and contact urticaria. Immunoblot analysis showed IgE reactivity to two distinct bee moth proteins at 23 and 70 kDa, respectively. ELISA inhibition studies excluded cross-reactivity to the other popular live bait, fly larva.

Persistence of invading gypsy moth populations in the United States.

Exotic invasive species are a mounting threat to native biodiversity, and their effects are gaining more public attention as each new species is detected. Equally important are the dynamics of exotic invasives that are previously well established. While the literature reports many examples of the ability of a newly arrived exotic invader to persist prior to detection and population growth, we focused on the persistence dynamics of an established invader, the European gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) in the United States. The spread of gypsy moth is largely thought to be the result of the growth a

[Historical study on the moth repellent, "Fujisawa Camphor" (1)].

"Fujisawa Camphor" was introduced for sale as a moth repellent for home use in 1897. As a background that camphor was produced on a commercial basis, the following were studied: (1) Camphor was already used as a moth repellent by some people in the Endo Period. (2) With the Sino-Japanese War as a turning point, armaments were increased and they made military uniforms which were made of wool. It also made Western woolen clothes spread in general. (3) As people were in danger to catch infectious diseases in those days, they had a habit of avoiding bad odors and drifting fragrances like camphor w

Epidemic dermatitis due to contact with a moth in Cozumel, Mexico.

In early December 1989, an outbreak that was initially thought to be scabies was investigated among employees of tourist hotels in Cozumel, Mexico. Of 417 employees interviewed, only 19 (4.6%) met a case definition for scabies dermatitis, while 91 (21.8%) reported a nonspecific dermatitis of less than one-week's duration. Persons with nonspecific dermatitis related the onset of their dermatitis to skin contact with a moth that had been present in large numbers in November. At the time of the initial investigation in December, there were no active cases of dermatitis and the moth was no longer

Ontogenetic variability of the Siberian silk moth, Dendrolimus sibiricus.

INTRODUCTION: The Siberian silk moth Dendrolimus sibiricus is a major boreal defoliator whose outbreak dynamics vary with the proportion of larvae following 1-year versus 2-year life cycles, yet the physiological basis of this ontogenetic variability remains unclear. METHODS: We generated tissue-specific RNA sequencing datasets from male and female larvae expressing 1-year or 2-year life cycles, dissected into head, gut, and fat body tissue sets (49 libraries), and quantified life-cycle effects using principal component analysis and differential expression with functional enrichment. RESULTS

Explaining the monoaural directional hearing of the moth Achroia grisella.

Achroia grisella (Fabricius, 1794) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) is a pyralid moth with two ears in its abdomen that it uses for detecting mates and predators. Despite no connection between the two ears having been found and no other elements having been observed through X-ray scans of the moth, it seems to be capable of directional hearing with just one ear when one of them is damaged. It is therefore suspected that the morphology of the eardrum can provide directional cues for sound localization. Here, we use finite element modelling software COMSOL to model a simplified version of the eardrum, a

Ocular complications of tussock moth cocoon associated injury.

Insect-associated intraocular foreign body (IOFB) is a rare etiology of ocular injury. Ocular exposure to tussock moth hairs, or setae, have been associated with ophthalmia nodosa, endophthalmitis, cataracts, and long-term vision loss. We present a case of a vitreous hemorrhage and tractional retinal detachment induced by Tussock moth cocoon setae. A 12-year-old male suffered a left eye injury induced by Tussock moth cocoon setae, causing vitreous hemorrhage and tractional retinal detachment. He underwent pars plana vitrectomy with removal of IOFB, endolaser, fluid-air exchange, and injection

Moth-eaten alopecia and beyond: Syphilitic alopecia - Revisited.

Alopecia is usually an overlooked manifestation of syphilis commonly seen in secondary syphilis with a prevalence of 2.9%-7%. It is broadly classified into symptomatic and essential alopecia and the observed patterns include moth-eaten type, generalized thinning, and mixed pattern. Here, we report a 38-year-old male who presented with mixed pattern alopecia of the scalp and bilateral postauricular lymphadenopathy. Toluidine red unheated serum test and Treponema pallidum hemagglutination were positive in a titer of 1:128 and 1:720, respectively. Trichoscopy showed empty follicles, perifollicula

Mosquito feeding affects larval behaviour and development in a moth.

Organisms are attacked by different natural enemies present in their habitat. While enemies such as parasitoids and predators will kill their hosts/preys when they successfully attack them, enemies such as micropredators will not entirely consume their prey. However, they can still have important consequences on the performance and ecology of the prey, such as reduced growth, increased emigration, disease transmission. In this paper, we investigated the impact of a terrestrial micropredator, the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti, on its unusual invertebrate host, the Egyptian cotton leaf wor

A baker's occupational allergy to flour moth (Ephestia kuehniella).

BACKGROUND: Allergy to insects is common. However, few reports cover occupational sensitization to flour moth (Ephestia [syn. Anagasta] kuehniella). We describe a baker who suffered from IgE-mediated occupational respiratory allergy to flour moth. METHODS: The skin prick test (SPT) and serum IgE tests were used to evaluate the patient's sensitivity to flour moth. Allergen cross-reactivity with mites was evaluated in IgE-inhibition studies. Clinical sensitivity was evaluated by nasal challenge test. Pulmonary function tests were repeatedly monitored. RESULTS: SPT with flour moth gave a 6-mm w

Experimental gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) ophthalmia nodosa.

Ophthalmia nodosa is the nodular granulomatous inflammatory response of ocular tissue to caterpillar hairs. We experimentally simulated this condition by surgically implanting gypsy moth hairs in the rabbit cornea. We were not, however, able to produce ophthalmia nodosa solely by placing cilia in the rabbit cul-de-sac. The experimentally induced inflammation closely resembled human ophthalmia nodosa in both its clinical and histopathologic features.

Essential Oils from Cameroonian Aromatic Plants as Effective Insecticides against Mosquitoes, Houseflies, and Moths.

Recently, spices have attracted the attention of scientists and agrochemical companies for their potential as insecticidal and acaricidal agents, and even as repellents to replace synthetic compounds that are labeled with detrimental impacts on environment and human and animal health. In this framework, the aim of this study was to evaluate the insecticidal potential of the essential oils (EOs) obtained from three Cameroonian aromatic plants, namely Monodora myristica (Gaertn.) Dunal, Xylopia aethiopica (Dunal) A. Rich., and Aframomum citratum (J. Pereira) K. Schum. They were produced by hydro

The ocelli of arctiid moths: ultrastructure of the retina during light and dark adaptation.

The ultrastructure of the dorsal ocelli of two arctiid moths (Arctia caja (A. caja) and Creatonotos transiens (C. transiens) was investigated. The two ocelli are positioned laterally on the vertex of the head posterior to the antennae, close to the dorsal margin of the compound eyes. The biconvex corneal lens is located at the apex of a cone-shaped cuticular elevation, which encapsulates the retina. The corneagenous cell layer and the cup-like retina with about 100-130 receptor cells in A. caja (70-90 receptor cells in C. transiens) are adjoined proximally. The retina is completely enclosed by…

Two new species of Rhipidoglossum (Orchidaceae, Angraecinae) from Central Africa, probably pollinated by settling moths.

A revision of Central African specimens of Rhipidoglossum has revealed two new species from the Cameroon Volcanic Line (CVL) and the lowland and peripheric forests of the Guineo-Congolian rainforest block. Rhipidoglossum acuminifolium sp. nov. is endemic to the CVL and is morphologically related to R. delepierreanum from the Western Rift Mountains. This disjunction may suggest historical connectivity or long-distance dispersal between these montane systems. Footage from Mount Cameroon recorded the settling moth Afroracotis cf. squalida (Lepidoptera, Erebidae) as a potential pollinator of R. ac
