Role of Motorcycle Running Lights in Reducing Motorcycle Crashes during Daytime; A Review of the Current Literature.

In comparison to other transportation modes, riding motorcycle is prone to accidents. Motorcyclists are more exposed to physical injury than the car drivers. Many multi-vehicle motorcycles crashes occur, there is right-of- way violation takes place in which another vehicle turns in fronts of a motorcycle, or a sudden cross of path of an on-coming motorcycle. One main factor which leads to high rate of motorcycle crashes is lack of conspicuity of motorcycles by other road users especially during day time traffic. This paper highlights previous studies on the implementation of motorcycle DRLs, f…

Morbidity associated with four-wheel all-terrain vehicles and comparison with that of motorcycles.

BACKGROUND: The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission in their annual report (2001) of all-terrain vehicle (ATV) deaths and injuries concluded that in the late 1990s there had been a gradual increase in the number of deaths and injuries related to ATV collisions. The objective of our study was to describe the morbidity of four-wheel all-terrain vehicle collisions (ATVCs) and compare them with motorcycle collision (MCC) victims. METHODS: This was a 24-month (April 2000-November 2002) retrospective review of all trauma patients admitted. Statistical significance was defined at p < 0.05. RESU

Issues in motorcycle sensory and cognitive conspicuity: the impact of motorcycle low-beam headlights and riding experience on drivers' decisions to turn across the path of a motorcycle.

BACKGROUND: Crashes involving a passenger car and a motorcycle, where the car is turning across the path of the motorcycle, are a major crash type of motorcycle riders. It has been proposed that the incidence of such crashes could be reduced through improvements in motorcycle conspicuity. Operation of low-beam headlights on motorcycles has been discussed as one approach for improving the "sensory conspicuity" of motorcycles during daylight hours, whilst previous experience as a rider may serve to heighten "cognitive conspicuity" through raised awareness of motorcyclists on our roads. METHOD: …

Rural adolescent attitudes and use of helmets while riding ATVs, motorcycles and dirt bikes.

BACKGROUND: Head injuries are the most common cause of death in some motorized vehicles for which helmet use can significantly decrease the risk. Our objective was to determine rural adolescents' attitudes regarding helmets and their use while riding ATVs, motorcycles and dirt bikes. METHODS: A convenience sample of 2022 Iowa FFA (formerly Future Farmers of America) Leadership Conference attendees were surveyed. After compilation, data were imported into the statistical program, R ( https://www.R-project.org/ ). Descriptive statistics, contingency table, logistic regression and non-parametric…

Epidemiological patterns of motorcycle-related injuries in Cameroon: A comparative analysis of motorcycle users and pedestrians.

Motorcycles are a common mode of transport in major Cameroonian cities, contributing to a rising burden of injuries among both users and pedestrians. These groups differ in exposure, mechanisms, and vulnerability, yet both bear a disproportionately high injury burden. However, comparative data on their epidemiological patterns and outcomes remain scarce. To support targeted prevention policies, we analysed trauma registry data to describe demographic, crash, injury, clinical, and outcome characteristics across both populations. This was a retrospective analysis of the Cameroon Trauma Registry …

Severity of motorcycle crashes in Calgary.

Motorcycle riders would be more vulnerable in the event of a crash because of their lack of protection which would often result in them suffering more severe injuries than car drivers. This paper estimated three crash severity models to identify factors that contributed to increasing the severity of motorcycle involved crashes in the Canadian City of Calgary. We found that results from the ordered logit model, heterogeneous choice model and partially constrained generalized ordered logit model produced estimates that were very similar which attested to their robustness. Injury severity tended

Public policies and motorcycle safety.

Numerous studies have examined the effectiveness of alcohol and traffic policies in reducing automobile crashes and fatalities, but only a few have analyzed the impact of state-specific policies on motorcycle safety. Given the growing popularity and inherent safety risks of motorcycle riding, this study provides a comprehensive investigation of both fatal and non-fatal injuries. State-level longitudinal data from 1990 to 2005 are analyzed to determine how various alcohol and traffic policies impact motorcycle safety and whether there are differential effects by type of injury. The results cons

Motorcycle helmets and traffic safety.

Between 1997 and 2005, the number of annual motorcyclist fatalities doubled. Motorcyclist fatalities now account for over 10 percent of all traffic-related fatalities. However, over the last three decades, states have generally been eliminating laws that require helmet use among all motorcyclists. This study examines the effectiveness of helmet use and state laws that mandate helmet use in reducing motorcyclist fatalities. Within-vehicle comparisons among two-rider motorcycles indicate that helmet use reduces fatality risk by 34 percent. State laws requiring helmet use appear to reduce motorcy…

Motorcycling freedom: a paraplegics dream.

People with disabilities have the same rights as other members of society in directing and implementing the decisions which affect their lives, although it is not always afforded them due to physical limitations. A chance encounter by the author, a University of Western Australia mechanical engineering student, with a paraplegic man who expressed his dream of being able to ride a motorcycle again led to the design and build of a specially modified motorcycle that could be ridden safely and comfortably by a person without the use of their legs. The prototype involved several modifications which

Pingueculae and pterygia in motorcycle policemen.

PURPOSE: Pinguecula and pterygium are speculated to be associated with corneal and conjunctival microtrauma from exposure to sunlight and/or dust. Occupational motorcycle driving is suspected to be associated with such exposure, so we investigated the prevalence of pingueculae and pterygia in motorcycle policemen. METHOD: Silt lamp finding obtained by periodic eye checkup for policemen (783 motorcycle policemen and 207 control indoor workers) together with questionnaire were used for analyses. All pingueculae and pterygia were diagnosed under the definite criteria. RESULTS: The overall preva

Injury patterns in motorcycle accidents.

A retrospective study of 260 cases of motorcycle accidents which occurred over a 4 1/2 year period is reported. Approximately 8% died of their injuries. The vulnerability of the tibia to open fractures is noted, and the frequent association of these open injuries with severe contamination and devitalization of tissues resulting in a high complication rate. Severely comminuted intraarticular fractures of the distal tibia and radius were numerous, and one is tempted to name the injury the "motorcycle radius." Traumatic amputations were few and all involved the lower extremity. Fractures of the c

Injury patterns and outcomes in motorcycle passengers.

INTRODUCTION: Contemporary trauma literature on injuries to motorcycle passengers is scarce. The aim of this study was to examine the injury patterns and outcomes of motorcycle passengers with regard to helmet use. We hypothesized that helmet utilization affects both injury type and outcomes. METHODS: The National Trauma Data Bank was queried for all motorcycle passengers who were injured in traffic accidents. Participants were stratified according to helmet utilization into helmeted (HM) and nonhelmeted (NHM) groups. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to compare the injury p

Motorcycle helmets: What about their coating?

In traffic accidents involving motorcycles, paint traces can be transferred from the rider's helmet or smeared onto its surface. These traces are usually in the form of chips or smears and are frequently collected for comparison purposes. This research investigates the physical and chemical characteristics of the coatings found on motorcycles helmets. An evaluation of the similarities between helmet and automotive coating systems was also performed.Twenty-seven helmet coatings from 15 different brands and 22 models were considered. One sample per helmet was collected and observed using optical…

Aeroacoustic sources of motorcycle helmet noise.

The prevalence of noise in the riding of motorcycles has been a source of concern to both riders and researchers in recent times. Detailed flow field information will allow insight into the flow mechanisms responsible for the production of sound within motorcycle helmets. Flow field surveys of this nature are not found in the available literature which has tended to focus on sound pressure levels at ear as these are of interest for noise exposure legislation. A detailed flow survey of a commercial motorcycle helmet has been carried out in combination with surface pressure measurements and at e…
