Treatment of a 33-month-old girl who sustained severe ethanol intoxication resulting from mouthwash ingestion prompted us to review the ingestions, compositions, and sales of these common household products. Mouthwashes contain up to 26.9% ethanol (53.8 proof), and each of the leading brands markets single containers that can supply a lethal ethanol dose to a toddler. Mouthwashes are particularly hazardous because they are thought to be innocuous, and they are widely available, attractive, and kept within easy reach of children. Parent education, and restrictions on packaging and ethanol conce…

Volatile sulphur compounds (VSC), hydrogen sulphide, methyl mercaptan and dimethyl sulphide are by-products derived in oral cavity through putrefactive activity of microorganisms. VSC are the principal cause of physiological oral malodour. There are indications that these compounds are cytotoxic to oral tissues. Hence, it has been considered that the prevention of oral malodour has an important role in preventive dentistry. The objective of this study is to ascertain the effect of two mouthwashes, sodium azulenesulphonic acid and povidone-iodine, which are frequently used in dental clinics, on…

This study examined the effects of natural herbal mouthwashes, dipotassium glycyrrhizinate, propolis extract, and a 1:1 combination of both, on the tensile strength of sutures commonly used in oral surgical procedures. Two types of absorbable sutures, polyglactin (PGA) and poliglecaprone 25 (PGCL), in sizes 3/0 and 4/0, were evaluated. Tensile strength was measured before and after immersion in five media (artificial saliva, chlorhexidine, and three herbal solutions) for 24 h, 3 days, 1 week, and 2 weeks. A universal testing machine applied a 50 N load at a constant rate of 2 mm/min. Statistic…

OBJECTIVES: The objective of the study was to evaluate the in vitro virucidal activity of commercial mouthwashes against SARS-CoV-2 and variants of concern.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Antiviral activity was assessed at different time intervals, based on common use of these products by titrating residual viral infectivity on Vero E6 cells.
RESULTS: All the mouthwashes were effective to reduce the infectious titers of SARS-CoV-2 and its tested variants. Mouthwashes Listerine® Cool Mint milder taste and Listerine® Cavity Protection milder taste reduced the infectious viral titer by up to 3.9 log10 …

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to verify the influence of prebrushing mouthwashes on dental plaque removal in children.
METHODS: This study had a double-blind, randomized, controlled, crossover, 25-day experimental design, including 38 12- to 14-year-olds. Four solutions were used as prebrushing mouthwashes (Colgate Plax Magic, Listerine Cool Blue Agent, water and dye, and water) by each participant with seven days' washout. The plaque index was evaluated before and after tooth-brushing during the experimental period.
RESULTS: Intergroup comparisons showed no significant differences …

AIM: Mouthwashes are frequently used to treat oral discomfort, halitosis or superficial infections. Adverse effects of mouthwash use are recognized, e.g. mucosal peeling and stomatitis. In addition, mouthwashes have been accused of causing oral cancer. The aim of this study was to analyse the acute toxicity of mouthwashes in an in vitro testing system, the pollen tube growth test (PTG test).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty mouthwash brands were prepared for study. The mouthwashes were added to suspensions of pollen of tobacco plants (Nicotiana sylvestris) that were collected during the early st…

This study compared the short-term clinical effect of 0.12% chlorhexidine gluconate and placebo mouthrinses in 30 adolescents (ages 11 to 15) undergoing orthodontic treatment. Subjects were randomized into experimental (CHX) and control (C) groups. Baseline values were recorded 10 days after prophylaxis and included Plaque index (PI), Gingival index (GI), Rentention Index (RI), Discoloration index (DI), and probing depths (PD). Both groups (CHX and C) received soft toothbrushes with instructions to brush twice daily, as well as the CHX and placebo mouthrinses, respectively, with oral and writt

BACKGROUND: Myristica fragrans, commonly known as nutmeg, has been shown to have many medicinal properties including reduction of plaque and oral halitosis. In the present study, a mouthwash was prepared from nutmeg oil to compare its effectiveness with 0.2% chlorhexidine (CHX) gluconate mouthwash on halitosis and plaque control.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 60 participants having plaque and plaque-induced oral halitosis were enrolled and randomly divided into two groups as Group A (30) and Group B (30). Nutmeg and 0.2% CHX gluconate mouthwash were administered in Group A and Group B, re

The purpose of this in vivo double-blind study was to determine and compare the antimicrobial effectiveness of four commercial over-the-counter mouthwashes and a water control. Two of the products tested contained alcohol (Listerine and Scope) and two products were alcohol-free (Rembrandt Mouth Refreshing Rincs and Clear Choice). The antimicrobial efficacy of the products was determined against aerobic, microaerophilic, and anaerobic bacteria in saliva. Thirty human subjects participated in the study. At each experimental session for a given subject, a pretest saliva sample was taken. This sam…

The use of mouthwash is a practical approach to decreasing bacteria during orthodontic treatment. This study aimed to investigate the antiba … rease in CFUs of S mutans than the chlorhexidine group (P < 0.001). Both chlorhexidine and curcumin mouthwashes significantly reduced the number of S mutans colonies when used regularly. The results of the present study suggest that curcumin herbal mouthwash is a superior choice to chlorhexidine for orthodontic patients due to its long-term antibacterial prop …

PURPOSE: Mouthwashes often present acidic pH, which raises concerns about their potential contribution to erosive tooth wear. This study evaluated the erosive potential of commercial fluoride-free mouthwashes using a screening method.
METHODS: A convenience sample of 81 different mouthwashes was evaluated for their erosion potential (International Organization for Standardization, ISO/FDIS 28888:2013). This method measured the pH changes (ΔpH) of 25 mL of calcium phosphate solution (baseline pH 5.05 ± 0.05; mean ± standard deviation) once the test mouthwash was added (0.25 mL). Three citric a…

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of commercially available, fluoride-free mouthwashes sold in Indianapolis, IN, on Streptococcus mutans biofilm.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighty-one different mouthwashes were purchased. A 16-h culture of S. mutans UA159 was treated with the mouthwashes in three dilutions (1:3, 1:6, and 1:12), prepared in Tryptic Soy broth supplemented with 1% sucrose. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MIC), planktonic, and biofilm growth were evaluated using a spectrophotometer. In addition, the growth for minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was evaluated using five…
