[Cerebral mucormycosis in the cat caused by Mucor pusillus].

The pathologic examination of the brain of a pet cat, suspected of rabies, showed lesions of mucormycosis. The causal fungus, Mucor (Rhizomucor) pusillus was isolated and identified. The authors describe the lesions produced, the experimental pathogenicity for the rabbit and the morphologic and physiologic characteristics of the isolate.

Alteration of Fermentative Metabolism Enhances Mucor circinelloides Virulence.

The fungus Mucor circinelloides undergoes yeast-mold dimorphism, a developmental process associated with its capability as a human opportunistic pathogen. Dimorphism is strongly influenced by carbon metabolism, and hence the type of metabolism likely affects fungus virulence. We investigated the role of ethanol metabolism in M. circinelloides virulence. A mutant in the adh1 gene (M5 strain) exhibited higher virulence than the wild-type (R7B) and the complemented (M5/pEUKA-adh1+) strains, which were nonvirulent when tested in a mouse infection model. Cell-free culture supernatant (SS) from the …

Mucor ramosissimus Samutsevitsch isolated from a thigh lesion.

Mucor ramosissimus Samutsevitsch is presented for the first time as an etiologic agent of cutaneous zygomycosis in a patient with aplastic anemia on immunosuppressive therapy. This report also represents the third case caused by this species reported in the literature. A biopsy taken from a lesion on the patient's thigh revealed broad, nonseptate, nonbranching hyphae compatible in morphology with a Zygomycete; M. ramosissimus was cultured twice from the thigh lesion. The patient was treated successfully with amphotericin B. Identifying features of M. ramosissimus include the following: numerou…

Mucor cerebral abscess associated with intravenous drug abuse.

We report on a case of a 26-year-old intravenous narcotic abuser with a primary cerebral mucormycotic abscess caused by Rhizopus oryzae. He was treated with a combination of intravenous and intraventricular amphotericin B and surgical drainage with a successful outcome. There was no evidence that his infection was acquired by the rhinocerebral route, it seems likely that he injected himself with a contaminated batch of narcotic or amphetamine. Mucormycosis presenting in this way has been described previously but this is only the second such case to survive. Early diagnosis and treatment is ess…

Prosthetic mitral valve mucormycosis caused by Mucor species.

We report, to the best of our knowledge the first case of prosthetic mitral valve mucormycosis caused by Mucor species in an 18-year-old female after mitral valve replacement. She was successfully treated with surgery and antifungal treatment. Mucormycosis was documented by direct demonstration, isolation and histopathological findings of the fungus from embolus and prosthetic mitral valve thrombus.

Possible differences in pathogenicity between cane toad-, frog- and platypus-derived isolates of Mucor amphibiorum, and a platypus-derived isolate of Mucor circinelloides.

Platypuses (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) in the north of the island state of Tasmania, Australia, suffer from a serious disease called ulcerative mycosis, which is responsible for high morbidity and, presumably, mortality rates in areas where it occurs. The disease is caused by the dimorphic fungus Mucor amphibiorum, which is also found in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. However, it does not cause disease in platypuses in those states. It has been previously reported that a closely related fungus, Mucor circinelloides, may also be capable of causing this disease. This paper describes pa…

Antimycotic Activity of Some Medicinal Plants against Mucor circinelloides.

The in vitro antimycotic activity of the leaf extract of Catharanthus roseus, Lantana camara, Nerium indicum, Sida cordifolia, and Ziziphus mauritiana was studied against M. circinelloides. This fungal species causes mucormycosis (black fungus). Presently, mucormycosis is affecting COVID patients due to prolonged use of steroids. So, it is needed to require development of more effective and less toxic antimycotic agents for the treatment of mucormycosis. Plants and their extraction preparations have been used as medicine against infectious disease. In this research, aqueous, ethanol, and DMSO …

Subcutaneous mucor zygomycosis with potential life-threatening visceral complication.

A mass in right supraclavicular fossa in a diabetic patient mimicking tuberculosis (TB) adenitis that ultimately proved to be subcutaneous zygomycosis. A high degree of clinical suspicion is needed for diagnosis especially when these lesions occur at typical sites for the more common indolent infections like TB. This case is being presented not only because of its rarity, but to emphasize the role of early diagnosis and appropriate treatment to prevent serious complications due to proximity to major structures. Fluconazole was used despite not being the ideal drug, solely due to cost constrain

Anti-inflammatory drugs selectively target sporangium development in Mucor.

It is known that acetylsalicylic acid, an anti-inflammatory and anti-mitochondrial drug, targets structure development and functions of yeasts depending on elevated levels of mitochondrial activity. Using antibody probes, we previously reported that sporangia of Mucor circinelloides also contain increased mitochondrial activity, yielding high levels of 3-hydroxyoxylipins. This was, however, not found in Mortierella alpina (subgenus Mortierella). In this study we report that acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) also targets sporangium development of Mucor circinelloides selectively, while hyphae with…

[Benign sinusal mucor colonization in association with septal deviation].

Mucormycosis is a well recognised opportunistic infection caused by saprophytic fungi of the Mucoraceae family. Usually, the upper aerodigestive tract is the portal of entry. Patients who are debilitated or inmunosuppressed might present with these infections, although sometimes can happen in patients with good health. We present a case of benign mucor colonitation at the sinus maxillary associated a deviated nasal septum.

Benign Mucor colonization (fungus ball) associated with chronic sinusitis.

Mucormycosis of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses is an aggressive, life-threatening condition characterized by fulminant destruction of soft tissues and bone, vascular invasion, and thrombosis. Patients who have this infection generally are immunosuppressed or diabetic. The most effective treatment is immediate surgical debridement of all involved tissue, along with systemic antifungal agents. We identified four patients with chronic sinusitis in whom Mucor organisms were histologically confirmed within the sinus contents but not in the sinus mucosa. All four were successfully treated wi…

Mucor Osteomyelitis of the Distal Radius Necessitating Ulnocarpal Fusion.

This is a case report of a 60-year-old female who developed distal radius osteomyelitis secondary to Mucor infection from likely hematogenous spread that was managed with ulnocarpal wrist fusion. Following serial debridement and systemic antifungal therapy, ulnocarpal wrist fusion offered functional limb salvage rather than amputation in this patient with significant operative risk and comorbidities.

Rhinocerebrocutaneous mucormycosis caused by Mucor species: A rare causation.

Rhinocerebral mucormycosis is the most common form of mucormycosis occurring commonly in patients of diabetic ketoacidosis. Fungi of the order Mucorales belong to six families, among whom Rhizopus is the most common, while Mucor is a rare cause. We report a 45-year-old female with uncontrolled diabetes mellitus diagnosed to have rhinocerebrocutaneous mucormycosis caused by Mucor species. The diagnosis was confirmed on histology and culture. A high-index of suspicion is required for early diagnosis and timely initiation of therapy to optimize the outcome. Our patient succumbed to her infection.

Mucor irregularis-associated cutaneous mucormycosis: Case report and review.

Solid organ transplant recipients are at risk for invasive fungal diseases, and are also exposed to healthcare-associated mucormycosis. Mainly causing localized cutaneous mucormycosis, Mucor irregularis infection is reported for the first time in a kidney-transplant recipient. A healthcare-associated origin was highly suspected in this case. We performed a literature review and highlight the characteristics of this very rare fungus.

Mucor amphibiorum infection in platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) from Tasmania.

Mucor amphibiorum, a fungus previously isolated from frogs and toads, is reported from free-living platypus, Ornithorhynchus anatinus, from rivers in northern Tasmania. This fungus is responsible for the severe ulcerative skin condition originally described by Munday and Peel (1983). Mucor amphibiorum was isolated from dermal lesions on four separate occasions. The gross and histopathological appearance of the fungal lesions were similar to the earlier description. In vivo this fungus develops as spherical forms containing a number of daughter spherules; no mycelia are seen in tissue sections.…
