A 7-year-old girl was referred to our vascular anomaly center for further evaluation of multiple lung nodules. These nodules were incidentally detected on a CT scan during hospitalization for treatment of mycoplasma pneumonia at another hospital. The biopsy results suggested the possibility of vascular tumors. Physical examination revealed clear breath sounds without rales. Furthermore, no skin lesions or other positive signs were observed. The patient was not receiving supplemental oxygen. Before she came to our center, the patient had received antibiotic treatment for mycoplasma pneumonia. T

The article presents the case of a 44 years old female patient admitted in the hospital for a solitary pulmonary nodule discovered through a chest X-ray performed for left thoracic pain. Despite the young age, a lot of comorbidities were present: severe dyslipidemia, ischemic right cerebellar lesion, degenerative periventricular lesions, chronic autoimmune thyroiditis, uterine fibroma, fibrocystic mastitis, polyglobulia of uncertain etiology and Rendu-Osler disease. The investigation which showed the nature of the pulmonary nodule was the CT scan with intravenous contrast, which demonstrated t

We describe a 66-year-old woman with recently diagnosed cT2N0 mouth cancer and multiple hypo-dense pulmonary nodules discovered on a computed tomographic chest scan. These nodules were located in the anterior part of the right upper and middle lobe and were resected thoracoscopically. Histologic examination of these nodules revealed a lipoid pneumonia. Exogenous lipoid pneumonia is a rare but described pulmonary disease that typically presents as consolidations. An exclusive presentation such as multiple pulmonary nodules is very unusual.

Intrathoracic involvement is common in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). We present the case of a young woman with a secondary pulmonary lymphoma (SPL) of the centroblastic subtype, with B-cell characteristics. The chest radiograph at presentation revealed an extremely rare pattern of multiple cavitating pulmonary nodules. The radiographic patterns of intrathoracic NHL are discussed.

A 40-year-old woman (a nonsmoker) with history of idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura and a platelet count > 90,000 cells/μL without specific medication was referred to pulmonary clinic for evaluation of multiple pulmonary nodules. The patient presented to an outside hospital with fatigue, lack of energy, and dyspnea on exertion for 2 years. She denied fever, cough, chest pain, or weight loss. An initial chest radiograph showed bilateral multiple pulmonary nodules. A chest CT scan revealed multiple nodular lesions, varying in size, in all lobes of both lungs. There was no mediastinal lympha…

A 72-year-old man presented to our hospital with fatigue and anemia. Chest CT showed multiple nodular shadows. We first suspected lung cancer and multiple metastatic lesions because some nodules had spiculation. However, PET-CT revealed the small intestine, thyroid and rib as well as these nodules to be positive for FDG uptake, suggesting malignant lymphoma and lung involvement. For diagnosis, lung biopsy by video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) was performed. Pathologic examination of the lung biopsy specimen showed diffuse large B-cell lymphoma. We diagnosed secondary pulmonary malignant ly

Invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) is an aggressive fungal infection of the lungs characterized by tissue invasion by fungal hyphal elements. The definitive diagnosis is challenging because it relies on histopathological demonstration of fungal elements, and these days clinicians are relying more on bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) cultures and serum biomarkers (galactomannan and beta-D-glucan). We would like to emphasize through our case the necessity to keep a high index of suspicion for IPA despite negative cultures and serum biomarkers in immunosuppressed patients and consider surgical bio

BACKGROUND: The localization of multiple pulmonary nodules is challenging due to a high incidence of pneumothorax after each needle insertion into lung parenchyma. The aim of the current study is to verify the safety and effectiveness of a modified technique utilizing simultaneous Hookwire placement to localize multiple lesions.
METHODS: The proposed method comprises a row of metal wires, perpendicular insertion, simultaneous release of Hookwire, and a lateral position to modify a conventional localizing technique. From January 2015 to August 2016, 23 patients were subjected to the modified t…

BACKGROUND: Infectious mononucleosis is usually a self-limiting illness, but can be rarely associated with complications.
CASE CHARACTERISTICS: A 17-year-old boy with Epstein-Barr virus related infectious mononucleosis and cold antibody-mediated autoimmune hemolytic anemia with incidentally noted multiple pulmonary nodules.
OBSERVATIONS: Nodules regressed over the next few weeks without specific therapy.
MESSAGE: Pediatricians need to be aware of this rare clinical presentation of infectious mononucleosis so that further invasive testing can be avoided.

Benign metastasizing leiomyoma (BML) is a rare disease of pathologically benign, but the tumor metastasizes to other organs. The most common organ involved in BML is lung. Pulmonary involvement usually manifested as multiple nodules on chest X-ray, however we experienced an interesting case of a 52-year-old premenopausal woman who presented with multiple bilateral lung cavitations and nodules on a chest X-ray without any respiratory symptoms. Chest computed-tomography identified multiple cavitary lesions of 5-12 mm in diameter and well-defined nodules of 5-10 mm in diameter in both lung fields

Hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT), or Rendu-Osler-Weber syndrome (ROWS) is a very rare hereditary disease. The diagnosis is based on the clinical findings such as recurrent epistaxis, telangiectases, visceral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and family history. AVMs are found in the liver, lung or brain and could mimick the masses of these organs. Radiologic evaluation plays a critical role during diagnostic and therapeutic management of ROWS. Hence, radiologists should be aware of the diagnosis of HHT in the patients with AVMs, history of epistaxis and family history. We report a

Syphilis is a sexually transmitted disease caused by Treponema pallidum. The prevalence of this disease has recently increased worldwide. However, pulmonary involvement in secondary syphilis is extremely rare. A 51-year-old heterosexual male patient presented with multiple pulmonary nodules with reactive serology from the Venereal Disease Research Laboratory test and positive fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption testing. A hematogenous metastatic malignancy was suspected and an excisional lung biopsy was performed. Histopathological examination showed only central necrosis with abscess a…

Congenital cystic adenomatoid malformation (CCAM) of the lung is a rare congenital developmental abnormality, representing about 25% of all congenital lung lesions. It is very rare that presentation is delayed until adulthood. We report a case of 63-year-old woman without notable pathological antecedents in whom a systematic chest X-ray revealed multiple bilateral pulmonary nodules. The patient was asymptomatic and her physical examination was normal. CT scan showed bilateral liquid rounded thin-walled densities of various size, with a homogeneous non calcified content. The diagnosis was based

A 55-year-old woman visited our hospital for further examination of abnormal shadows on chest radiographs. Her routine chest radiograph showed two nodular shadows in the right lower lung field. A chest CT scan revealed other nodules, small patchy shadows in both lung fields, and enlargement of the mediastinal lymphnodes (#2, 3). Laboratory data showed polyclonal hyperimmunoglobulinemia. This case was initially considered on the basis of a transbronchial lung biopsy to be a plasma cell granuloma. However, serum gammaglobulin levels gradually increased, and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery w

Cat-scratch disease is an unusual bacterial illness that only rarely shows pulmonary involvement. The authors describe a 19-year-old woman with chronic renal failure who presented with multiple pulmonary nodules, a previously undescribed manifestation of cat-scratch disease.
