Effect of biofertilizers on leaf yield, nitrate amount, mineral content and antioxidants of basil (Ocimum basilicum L.) in a floating culture.

Hydroponics is one of the systems in agriculture which reinforce productivity by controlling environmental and growing conditions. In this study, we evaluated the effect of three bio-fertilizers, namely bacteria, micro-algae, and mycorrhiza, on basil leaf yield and quality (Ocimum basilicum L.) in a floating culture system. Soil has rich amounts of beneficial microorganisms, supporting plant nutrition, producing phytohormones, controlling phytopathogens, and improving soil structure. However, soilless culture usually contains no beneficial microorganisms if we do not include them in the system

Microbial symbionts affect Pisum sativum proteome and metabolome under Didymella pinodes infection.

UNLABELLED: The long cultivation of field pea led to an enormous diversity which, however, seems to hold just little resistance against the ascochyta blight disease complex. The potential of below ground microbial symbiosis to prime the immune system of Pisum for an upcoming pathogen attack has hitherto received little attention. This study investigates the effect of beneficial microbes on the leaf proteome and metabolome as well as phenotype characteristics of plants in various symbiont interactions (mycorrhiza, rhizobia, co-inoculation, non-symbiotic) after infestation by Didymella pinodes.

Elevated atmospheric CO2 alters the microbial community composition and metabolic potential to mineralize organic phosphorus in the rhizosphere of wheat.

BACKGROUND: Understanding how elevated atmospheric CO2 (eCO2) impacts on phosphorus (P) transformation in plant rhizosphere is critical for maintaining ecological sustainability in response to climate change, especially in agricultural systems where soil P availability is low. METHODS: This study used rhizoboxes to physically separate rhizosphere regions (plant root-soil interface) into 1.5-mm segments. Wheat plants were grown in rhizoboxes under eCO2 (800 ppm) and ambient CO2 (400 ppm) in two farming soils, Chromosol and Vertosol, supplemented with phytate (organic P). Photosynthetic carbon

Establishing the Relationship Between Flavonoid Content, Mycorrhization, and Soil Nutritional Content in Different Species of the Genus Passiflora in Colombia.

The genus Passiflora comprises more than 500 species distributed in tropical and semitropical regions. With a great diversity of species, it is estimated that one-third is found in Colombian territory. Besides the food importance, Passiflora species are important sources of biologically active compounds, such as flavonoids. The most important symbiosis between soil fungi and vascular plants related to plant nutrition and tolerance to stress conditions is mycorrhizae. Passiflora species form arbuscular mycorrhizae, with several species of Glomeromycota. This association has been reported to alt…

Introduced species shed friends as well as enemies.

Many studies seeking to understand the success of biological invasions focus on species' escape from negative interactions, such as damage from herbivores, pathogens, or predators in their introduced range (enemy release). However, much less work has been done to assess the possibility that introduced species might shed mutualists such as pollinators, seed dispersers, and mycorrhizae when they are transported to a new range. We ran a cross-continental field study and found that plants were being visited by 2.6 times more potential pollinators with 1.8 times greater richness in their native ran…

Physiological investigation of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi-mediated salt tolerance in persimmon (Diospyros kaki) seedlings.

INTRODUCTION: Climate change has increased the frequency of drought periods in the Mediterranean basin, including the Çukurova region, and is projected to exacerbate both drought stress and soil salinization in future agricultural systems. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are known to enhance plant growth and alleviate abiotic stress, yet their potential to improve salt tolerance in Diospyros kaki, a species considered sensitive to salinity, remains underexplored. METHODS: This study, evaluated the effects of two AMF species, Entrophospora etunicatum and Glomus clarum, on growth parameters,

Neurotoxicity and biomarkers of lead exposure: a review.

In plants, phosphorus (P) uptake occurs via arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis and through plant roots. The phosphate concentration is known to affect colonization by AM fungi, and the effect depends on the plant species. Stevia rebaudiana plants are valuable sources of sweetener compounds called steviol glycosides (SGs), and the principal components of SGs are stevioside and rebaudioside A. However, a detailed analysis describing the effect of the phosphate concentration on the colonization of AM fungi in the roots and the relationship of these factors to the accumulation of SGs and photoc

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi promote growth and enhance the accumulation of bioactive compounds in Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.).

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) have been known to enhance plant growth and nutrient uptake. In this study, we investigated the effects of Funneliformis mosseae, Rhizophagus intraradices, and their co-inoculation on the growth and biochemical composition of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants. The findings demonstrated that the inoculation of AMF significantly enhanced shoot and root length, shoot and root dry weight, number of fruits per plant, as well as concentrations of anthocyanin, phenolic compounds, and antioxidants in tomato plants. Both individual and co-inoculation of AMF also

Comparison of systemic and local interactions between the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Funneliformis mosseae and the root pathogen Aphanomyces euteiches in Medicago truncatula.

It has been shown in a number of pathosystems that arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi confer resistance against root pathogens, including in interactions between Medicago truncatula and the root rot-causing oomycete Aphanomyces euteiches. For the current study of these interactions, a split root system was established for plant marker gene analysis in order to study systemic defense responses and to compare them with local interactions in conventional pot cultures. It turned out, however, that split root systems and pot cultures were in different physiological stages. Genes for pathogenesis-rel

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi and Plant Resilience: Mechanisms of Drought and Salinity Stress Tolerance.

Terrestrial plants are frequently exposed to fluctuating abiotic stresses throughout their life cycle, and mycorrhizae can markedly enhance host plant resistance to such challenges. This review summarizes recent advances in our understanding of how arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) enhance host plant tolerance through multiple mechanisms. AMF promote stress tolerance through diverse mechanisms, including nutrient solubilization, polyamine accumulation, reactive oxygen species scavenging, physiological improvements, maintenance of ultrastructural stability via membrane integrity, accumulation …

Nitrate regulates rhizobial and mycorrhizal symbiosis in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.).

Nitrogen-limited conditions are considered to be a prerequisite for legume-rhizobial symbiosis, but the effects of nitrate-rich conditions o … trogenase activity, also extended the span of nitrogen-fixing activity. By contrast, for arbuscular mycorrhizae, continuous 10 and 50 mmol/L nitrate increased the percent root length colonization, concomitantly reduced arbuscule size, and enhanced ammonia transport without affecting phosphate transport. Therefore, in this manuscript, we have proposed the impo …

Diversity of phosphorus reserves in microorganisms.

Phosphorus compounds are indispensable components of the Earth's biomass metabolized by all living organisms. Under excess of phosphorus compounds in the environment, microorganisms accumulate reserve phosphorus compounds that are used under phosphorus limitation. These compounds vary in their structure and also perform structural and regulatory functions in microbial cells. The most common phosphorus reserve in microorganism is inorganic polyphosphates, but in some archae and bacteria insoluble magnesium phosphate plays this role. Some yeasts produce phosphomannan as a phosphorus reserve. Thi

Diversity-productivity relationships in ericaceous plants are influenced by interactions with ericoid mycorrhizal fungi.

The positive effect of plant diversity on ecosystem productivity is among the most widespread trends in ecosystem ecology. Most studies suggest that niche differences (complementarity) play a significant role in shaping these effects. As most plant species require mutualistic mycorrhizal fungi to access limiting nutrients, recent evidence suggests that these mutualisms may mediate the complementarity detected in plant studies. Yet, until now, previous studies have focused primarily on the role of mycorrhizal presence in altering these relationships, but no studies have examined the combined ef

Fruit quality and volatile compound composition of processing tomato as affected by fertilisation practices and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi application.

The effects of different fertilisation treatments with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) inoculation on AMF root colonisation, fruit yield, nutrient and total phenol contents, volatile compound composition, and sensory attributes of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) were investigated. Mineral, organic, and mineral + organic fertiliser application positively affected tomato yield (35%-50%) and phosphorus concentration (24%-29%) compared with controls. AMF application had a significant impact on the total nitrogen (+9%), manganese (+12%), and hydrophilic phenol (+8%) contents in the fruit. Volat

Fine-tuning by strigolactones of root response to low phosphate.

Strigolactones are plant hormones that regulate the development of different plant parts. In the shoot, they regulate axillary bud outgrowth and in the root, root architecture and root-hair length and density. Strigolactones are also involved with communication in the rhizosphere, including enhancement of hyphal branching of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi. Here we present the role and activity of strigolactones under conditions of phosphate deprivation. Under these conditions, their levels of biosynthesis and exudation increase, leading to changes in shoot and root development. At least for the

The genetic program at the root of the biological stock exchange.

Beneath the gardens, farmlands and forest floors that surround us, a hidden world blooms in careful cooperation and intense competition. The mutualistic symbiosis of the thread-like hyphae of fungi and plant roots (collectively termed mycorrhizae from the Greek mýkēs - meaning 'fungus', and rhiza - for 'root') is present in the vast majority of plant species. As with most intimate relationships, this symbiosis functions on a principle of 'give and take'. As an autotroph, the plant is able to synthesize all the sugars it requires through photosynthesis; however, its immobility hinders its capac…

From invitation to eviction: How plants control arbuscular mycorrhizal symbiosis.

Arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis is often presented as a linear sequence of fungal recognition, root colonization, arbuscule formation, and nutrient exchange. This view underrepresents the repeated regulatory transitions through which plants influence symbiotic establishment, function, and persistence. Here, we propose a checkpoint framework organized around invitation, admission, accommodation, investment, maintenance, and termination and renewal. We examine how nutrient status, carbon availability, hormonal and immune signaling, systemic root-shoot communication, and environmental conte

Effects of biogenerated ferric hydroxides nanoparticles on truffle mycorrhized plants.

Truffles are highly valuable ectomycorrhizal fungi that grow naturally in alkaline, calcareous soils. Iron deficiency chlorosis is a common problem in truffle (Tuber spp.) cultivation due to the high quantity of lime added to increase the pH of acidic soils. In this work, the effects of ferric hydroxide nanoparticles embedded in an exopolysaccharide (Fe-EPS NPs), extracted from cultures of Klebsiella oxytoca DSM 29614, were investigated on Quercus robur seedlings under greenhouse conditions. The plants were inoculated with Tuber borchii (the bianchetto truffle) and were cultivated with and wit

Drought Eliminates the Difference in Root Trait Plasticity and Mycorrhizal Responsiveness of Two Semiarid Grassland Species with Contrasting Root System.

Root traits and arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) fungi are important in determining the access of plants to soil resources. However, whether plants with different root systems (i.e., taproot vs. fibrous-root) exhibit different root trait plasticity and mycorrhizal responsiveness under drought remains largely unexplored. Tap-rooted Lespedeza davurica and fibrous-rooted Stipa bungeana were grown in monocultures in sterilized and live soils, followed by a drought treatment. Biomass, root traits, root colonization by AM fungi, and nutrient availability were evaluated. Drought decreased biomass and root

Reduced fungal dependency during in situ germination of the terrestrial orchid Bletilla formosana.

Orchid seed germination is generally considered to be obligatorily dependent on mycorrhizal fungi. However, some terrestrial orchids are capable of asymbiotic germination in water agar under laboratory conditions, raising questions about the degree of fungal dependency during germination in nature. Here, we investigated in situ germination and fungal associations of the terrestrial orchid Bletilla formosana in Taiwan using seed packet experiments, high-throughput sequencing, ink staining, and stable isotope analyses. B. formosana exhibited rapid germination and a relatively high germination pe
