We investigated the reliability of nalidixic acid (NA) susceptibility as a marker of ciprofloxacin susceptibility in Salmonella, analysing 302 stool isolates. NC53 of the MicroScan system was used for NA susceptibility tests and the E-test was used for ciprofloxacin susceptibility tests. Among the isolates, 178 (58.9 %) were serogroup B, 74 (24.5 %) were serogroup D, 27 (8.9 %) were serogroup C and 23 (7.6 %) were from other minor serogroups. Spondylodiscitis due to typhoidal Salmonella presents a therapeutic challenge for clinicians. Factors that complicate treatment include drug-resistant strains, poor antibiotic bone penetration, potential for neurological compromise and lack of established protocols and guidelines. A short term investigation on the Campylobacter enteritis among children under 10 years of age was carried out in Chennai. The study revealed an isolation rate of 11 per cent in 100 patients suffering from acute diarrhoea comprising C. jejuni (8%) and C. coli. (3%). Among the two culture methods used, the candle jar method was found to be superior to plastic bag incubation system in recovering campylobacters on charcoal cefeperazone deoxycholate agar. While all the isolates were sensitive to ciprofloxacin, all of them exhibited resistance to nalidixic acid.

A 3-day course of a new citrated formulation of nalidixic acid (Mictral) was assessed in fifty-four women presenting with acute uncomplicated cystitis. Over 96% of women with a significant Gram-negative bacteriuria were cured of the infection following a course of treatment. Only two relapses occurred in this group during the follow-up period. Relief of symptoms occurred in nearly 90% of infected patients and generally by the second day of treatment. Although the incidence of side-effects was about 20% they were not considered serious.
