[Application of narrow band imaging in early diagnosis of pharyngolaryngeal tumors].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the application value of narrow band imaging (NBI) in early diagnosis of pharyngolaryngeal tumors. METHOD: A total of 106 patients received NBI endoscopy in the endoscopic diagnosis. Lesions found under the white-light endoscopy mode and NBI endoscopy mode were compared in the morphology of capillaries on lesiorn surface and the clarity of lesion rim. Biopsy was performed in suspected areas with those two endoscopies for the lesions found under white-light endoscopy and NBI endoscopy, the morphology of capillaries on the surface of lesion and the clarity of lesion bo…

Diagnostic utility of narrow-band imaging endoscopy for pharyngeal superficial carcinoma.

AIM: To investigate the endoscopic features of pharyngeal superficial carcinoma and evaluate the utility of narrow-band imaging (NBI) for this disease. METHODS: In the present prospective study, 335 patients underwent conventional white light (CWL) endoscopy and non-magnified/magnified NBI endoscopy, followed by an endoscopic biopsy, for 445 superficial lesions in the oropharynx and hypopharynx. The macroscopic appearance of superficial lesions was categorized as either elevated (< 5 mm in height), flat, or depressed (not ulcerous). Superficial carcinoma (SC) was defined as a superficial lesi

Thiersch graft follow-up with narrow band imaging for acquired atresia of the external auditory canal: Canaloplasty with Thiersch graft versus vascularization evaluated with narrow band imaging.

Acquired atresia of the external ear canal is a narrowing of the external ear canal (EAC) that appears obstructed by fibrous tissue or bone tissue. Acquired atresia has two different phases: wet and dry stage. Computed tomography (CT) scan may show a scan where soft tissue fills EAC. Treatment may be medical and/or surgical. The surgical treatment of choice is represented by canaloplasty with a skin-free flap. To our knowledge, no article has reported data on the analysis of vascularization of acquired atresia of the external ear canal and vascularization of skin flap during follow-up with nar

Uncertainty-Aware Prediction Across Endoscopic Domains: Laryngeal Narrow-Band and Gastrointestinal Imaging.

Background: Deep-learning systems for endoscopic image classification are commonly evaluated with random data splits, which may overestimate performance under acquisition shift; uncertainty-aware selective prediction may improve reliability by allowing a model to abstain on uncertain cases. Methods: We evaluated binary abnormality detection in two endoscopic imaging domains: laryngeal contact-endoscopy narrow-band imaging (CE-NBI; 210 patients, patient-level) and gastrointestinal endoscopy (HyperKvasir; 6746 images, image-level, predominantly white-light). Use of Narrow Band Imaging to Guide Endobronchial Biopsy for Suspected Sarcoidosis.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosis of sarcoidosis often involves endobronchial biopsy (EBB), but studies have shown varying yields for EBB in suspected sarcoidosis, partly due to differences in identifying abnormal mucosa under white light (WL). Narrow band imaging (NBI) may assist in the visualization of abnormal mucosa, but its role in sarcoidosis remains to be characterized. METHODS: Individuals referred for suspected sarcoidosis were considered for enrollment. Bronchoscopy with both WL and NBI was conducted, followed by EBB. The main objectives were to characterize NBI abnormalities in this patient po…

Laryngeal Mucosal Tumor Mapping with Narrow Band Imaging and Confocal Laser Endomicroscopy.

Confocal laser endomicroscopy (CLE) represents an emerging probe-based intraoperative optical imaging modality, contingent on differential fluoroscein uptake, equipped to improve intraoperative identification of subclinical mucosal disease. In the analysis herein, we describe improved sensitivity, compared to narrow band imaging and small-volume tissue biopsies, of CLE in the discrimination of occult disease based on cellular and subcellular morphology during endoscopic resection of early-staged larynx cancers. Laryngoscope, 135:1767-1770, 2025.

[Narrow-band imaging endoscopy for diagnosis of adult laryngeal papillomatosis - case raports].

The laryngeal papillomas belong to the group of non-malignant tumours. The risk of getting sick increases with the number of contingent sexual contacts, smoking, alcohol abuse and untreated gastro-oesophageal reflux. This paper describes five cases presenting different levels of exposure to the risk factors and variable course of adult laryngeal papillomatosis. These people, in addition to routine diagnostics, were examined using endoscopy with the use of narrow beam of light, which turns out to be a useful diagnostic tool in the case of laryngeal papillomatosis.

Narrow band imaging for head and neck malignancies: Lessons learned from mistakes.

BACKGROUND: The accuracy of white light endoscopy in combination with narrow band imaging (WLE + NBI) for diagnosis of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) does not reach 100%. We evaluated the characteristics of the false-negative and false-positive cases. METHODS: Five hundred thirty lesions of the upper airways were evaluated. The WLE was followed by NBI examination before performing a biopsy. RESULTS: The false-negative lesions (7.36%) were represented by submucosal and non-SCC tumors. Among the 25 non-SCC tumors, 72% did not show any suspicious vascular pattern under NBI. The false-positive le…

Reliability of office-based narrow-band imaging-guided flexible laryngoscopic tissue samplings.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Direct suspension laryngoscopic biopsy performed under general anesthesia is the conventional management for obtaining pathological diagnosis for neoplasms of the larynx, oropharynx, and hypopharynx. Since the development of distal chip laryngoscopy and digital imaging systems, transnasal flexible laryngoscopy tissue sampling has gained popularity as an office-based procedure. Additional assessment with narrow-band imaging (NBI) can help to increase the diagnostic yield. The aim of the study was to evaluate the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of a novel diagnostic

Narrow band imaging facilitates detection of inlet patches in the cervical oesophagus.

BACKGROUND: Proximal esophageal heterotopic gastric mucosa or so-called inlet patch in the cervical oesophagus is easily missed on endoscopic examination because of its localisation, usually just below the upper oesophageal sphincter. We evaluated the clinical use of narrow band imaging for detection of inlet patches. METHODS: In this prospective, controlled observational study, 1407 subsequent patients underwent oesophagogastroduodenoscopy with or without narrow band imaging on withdrawal of the endoscope in the cervical oesophagus. RESULTS: One endoscopist who was not aware of the prospect…

Chromoendoscopy versus narrow band imaging for colonic surveillance in inflammatory bowel disease.

BACKGROUND: Mucosal dye spraying (chromoendoscopy [CE]) has been shown in controlled studies to enhance lesion detection in colitis surveillance. Narrow band imaging (NBI) potentially offers a more convenient mode of highlighting mucosal lesions. The primary objectives of this study were to compare CE and NBI in colitis surveillance with respect to lesion detection. A secondary objective was to assess the accuracy of the mucosal pit pattern (Kudo classification) with NBI in predicting mucosal histology. METHODS: Patients with colitis of 8 years or greater disease duration underwent screening …

Update on narrow band imaging in disorders of the upper gastrointestinal tract.

With the ever-increasing concern regarding morbidity and mortality associated with diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, the importance of an effective and efficient diagnostic tool cannot be overstated. The standard of care currently is an examination using conventional white light endoscopy. This approach may occasionally overlook areas exhibiting a premalignant change. Numerous image-enhanced modalities have been recently introduced. Narrow band imaging (NBI) appears to be the most prominent of these and perhaps the most commonly used. Thepresent review will focus on some of the newer stu…

Intraoperative detection of residual arteriovenous malformation using narrow-band imaging: illustrative case.

BACKGROUND: Complete obliteration of the nidus is the primary goal of microsurgical treatment for arteriovenous malformations (AVMs), yet small residual components may be difficult to detect under conventional white-light visualization. OBSERVATIONS: A 46-year-old man presented with a ruptured Spetzler-Martin grade III AVM with a large temporoparietal intracerebral hemorrhage. After endovascular embolization, microsurgical resection was performed using a 4K 3D ORBEYE exoscope system. Although the nidus appeared completely removed under white light, narrow-band imaging (NBI) revealed a small v
