Stenting the nasopharyngeal isthmus by nasopharyngeal airway after correction of acquired total nasopharyngeal obstruction: surgical procedure and results.

The objective of this study is to describe a simple surgical procedure for management of acquired total nasopharyngeal obstruction in adults. Five patients were diagnosed as having complete nasopharyngeal obstruction over a 3-year period. Three patients previously underwent uvulopalatoplasty, while for the remaining two it was due to pharyngoscleroma. In all the patients, nasopharyngeal obstruction was at the level of the inferior edge of the soft palate. Two of the post-uvulopalatoplasty patients had recurrent obstruction after scar excision and topical application of mitomycin-C without sten

Is acetaminophen as effective as an antihistamine-decongestant-acetaminophen combination in relieving symptoms of acute nasopharyngitis in children? A randomised, controlled trial.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the efficiency of drugs, which include antihistaminic-decongestant-acetaminophen agents versus only acetaminophen in symptomatic treatment of acute nasopharyngitis in children. METHODS: This clinical, randomized, controlled, single blind drug efficacy comparison research was conducted in 148 patients with acute nasopharyngitis between ages 2 and 12 years. After randomization, Group-1 consisted of cases (n: 86), which used OTC drugs [acetaminophen+diphenhydramine+pseudoephedrin] and Group-2 consisted of cases (n: 62), which used only acetaminophen. After receiving nasa…

Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma Cell Lines: Reliable Alternatives to Primary Nasopharyngeal Cells?

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a type of cancer that originates from the mucosal lining of the nasopharynx and can invade and spread. Although contemporary chemoradiotherapy effectively manages the disease locally, there are still challenges with locoregional recurrence and distant failure. Therefore, it is crucial to have a deeper understanding of the molecular basis of NPC cell movement in order to develop a more effective treatment and to improve patient survival rates. Cancer cell line models are invaluable in studying health and disease and it is not surprising that they play a critica

[A case of nasopharyngeal inflammatory myofibroblastic tumorafter radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor(IMT)is composed of the cable shape myofibroblastic cells which constitute soft tissue tumors.IMT is mostly encountered in the lung, its occurrence in the head and neck is relatively rare. Herein, we reported 1 case of IMT after radiotherapy of nasopharyngeal carcinoma(NPC)in the nasopharynx. The clinical symptoms and nasal pharynx imaging findings of IMT are similar to the NPC.Thus, the pathological and immunohistochemistrical examinations maybe helpful to make a correct diagnosis.

Nasopharyngeal brush biopsies and detection of nasopharyngeal cancer in a high-risk population.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is an important tumor in many countries. Ethnic and regional factors strongly influence disease risk. NPC is usually diagnosed late in disease development, and 10-year survival rates are as low as 10%. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), a possibly causative agent, is present in all cells of essentially all undifferentiated NPCs. We wished to determine the following: 1) whether an ambulatory nasopharyngeal brush biopsy could provide sufficient tumor cell DNA for the detection of EBV and 2) whether the detection of EBV in this locale reflects the presence of tum

Biomarkers for nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma (NPC) is a malignant tumor that is highly prevalent in Southeast Asia, particularly in China and Indonesia. According to the World Health Organization's global cancer statistics in 2022, there were 120,434 new cases and 73,485 deaths from NPC. Risk factors contribute to NPC development including genetic factors, dietary habits, and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. This paper reviews the comparison of different types of EBV test for NPC over the last few years and summarized the performance of novel diagnostic biomarker such as newly reported EBV antibody, anti-BNLF2

Primary nasopharyngeal tuberculosis.

No part of the human body is immune to tuberculosis, the most common site being the lungs. We report a rare case of primary nasopharyngeal tuberculosis without cervical lymphadenopathy nor pulmonary involvement. The only presenting symptom was an intermittent discomfort in the neck and throat. Several biopsies were performed to exclude nasopharyngeal carcinoma and to reach the final diagnosis of tuberculosis. The patient made full recovery following 6 months of treatment with antibiotics. A multidisciplinary approach by ear, nose and throat, radiology, pathology, and infectious disease colleag

[Radiotherapy for nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

Nasapharyngeal carcinoma is a rare disease. Oftenly, the diagnostic is made for advanced disease. Localized tumors, T1 or T2 NO observed a good prognosis and are locally controlled in more than 90 % of the cases by radiotherapy alone. The standard treatment of locally advanced disease is combined chemoradiation. A special vigilance of fast decrease of the volume of the pathological lymph nodes, sometimes associated to loss of weight might indicate an adaptive dosimetric revision. The treatment of recurrent disease is of great importance. Surgical indications are limited but should be discussed

Juvenile Nasopharyngeal Angiofibroma.

A 9 year old male presented with nasal obstruction and recurrent, unprovoked epistaxis for 1 week. Imaging revealed a highly vascular mass in the nasopharynx. The feeding vessels were subsequently embolized and the mass was removed completely. Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma is a benign but locally invasive tumor accounting for about 0.05% of all head and neck tumors. Patients usually present with nasal obstruction and epistaxis. The tumor can however be extensive on presentation with intra orbital and intra cranial extension. The treatment is surgical removal of the tumor and the approac

[Nasopharyngeal cancers, an overview].

Cancer of the nasopharynx is an uncommon malignancy in France (incidence  =  0.5/year/100,000 men) but is endemic in areas like in South-East Asia. Exclusive radiation therapy used to be the standard and results in local control rates for T3-T4 tumors around 50-75 %. Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) improves tumor coverage with a sparing of organs at risk and has to be privileged. Concurrent chemotherapy with IMRT achieved significant survival benefice with 5-year overall survival above 75 %. Concurrent radiochemotherapy with platinum is the most frequent scheme but induction and adjuva

[Immunogenetics of nasopharyngeal carcinoma].

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a complex multifactorial disorder involving both genetic and environmental factors. Genetic predisposition linked to the immune system has been associated with various tumors. This involves genetic diversity of the genes encoding the molecules of the immune response such as inflammation and anti-tumor surveillance. In this work, we examined the impact of the immunogenetic diversity on the risk of the NPC in different populations studied. These data show that the interindividual variability of the genetic regulation of immune processes increases the risk of NPC

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibroma.

Juvenile nasopharyngeal angiofibromas (JNAs) are rare, benign, highly vascular, locally aggressive tumors that primarily affect male adolescents. Historical treatment of these neoplasms has been primarily surgical. In the past decade, endoscopic resection of JNAs has become a viable and promising surgical treatment option. Endoscopic resection has many advantages over traditional open techniques, including better cosmesis, decreased blood loss, shortened hospital stays, and equivalent or improved recurrence rates. Emerging endoscopic technology continues to push the boundaries of resection of

Localized nasopharyngeal amyloidosis.

A mass in the nasopharynx often implies a malignancy in adults, particularly in the endemic areas of Epstein-Barr virus-associated undifferentiated carcinoma. We report an 86-year-old male patient who presented to our rhinologic outpatient department with postnasal drip for several years, with no other associated nasal symptoms. Physical examination with nasal endoscopy found a prominent bulge in the nasopharynx. Pathological examination of the biopsied specimens identified features consistent with amyloidosis. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated an enhanced soft-tissue mass localized to t
