Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is associated with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), the predominant form of primary liver cancer (PLC). In 2015, Georgia implemented the HCV Elimination Program to reduce high national prevalence. We analyzed linked national registry data to characterize primary liver cancer cases in Georgia and evaluate the burden and treatment patterns of HCV infection among affected individuals during the national HCV elimination program. Data from the Georgian Cancer Registry (GCR), the national Vital Registration System, and the HCV Elimination Program databases were linke

Uterine cancer is one of the few cancers with increasing incidence and mortality in the United States, reflecting, in part, increases in the prevalence of overweight and obesity since the 1980s (1). It is the fourth most common cancer diagnosed and the seventh most common cause of cancer death among U.S. women (1). To assess recent trends in uterine cancer incidence and mortality by race and ethnicity, CDC analyzed incidence data from CDC's National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) and the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) program and mortality d…

BACKGROUND: As human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccination becomes widely available in the US for cervical cancer prevention, it may also affect the rates of other cancers potentially associated with HPV. The objective of the current study was to describe the incidence rates of oropharyngeal and oral cavity cancers in the US with a focus on anatomic sites potentially associated with HPV infection.
METHODS: Incident cases diagnosed between 1998 and 2003 identified through 39 population-based registries that participate in the National Program of Cancer Registries and/or the Surveillance, Epidemiolo…

Historically, information on routes of diagnosis in cancer registration in Japan lacked reliability. The launch of the National Cancer Registry in 2016 produced a marked improvement in data accuracy. In this study, we aimed to estimate the proportion of screen-detected gastrointestinal cancers using the National Cancer Registry and to examine its correlation with cancer screening participation rates. We analyzed 2016-2020 National Cancer Registry data to identify screen-detected gastrointestinal cancers and assess the correlation between route of diagnosis and stage at diagnosis. Screening par

Genetic and familial susceptibility accounts for 10% of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) cases and represents a small but relevant subgroup in which early detection may meaningfully affect outcomes. Pathogenic germline variants (PGVs) in susceptibility genes, such as BRCA2/ATM/CDKN2A/STK11/PALB2/TP53, as well as mismatch repair genes, confer a substantially higher lifetime risk, while families fulfilling the criteria for familial pancreatic cancer (FPC) exhibit disease clustering in the absence of an identifiable PGV. Over the past two decades, surveillance strategies for high-risk indi

BACKGROUND: Clinical registries are designed to collect quality data about the care for cancer patients in order to improve it. They gather data that are generated during diagnosis and cancer treatment and also post-treatment follow-up. Analysis of collected data allows an improvement in the quality of patient care and a comparison with other health care providers. The aim of the present article is to describe the current version and practice of hospital-based cervical cancer registry in UKC Maribor.

Although the overall rate of colorectal cancer (CRC) has remained stable, studies have shown an increase in the rate of CRC in young patients (<50) nationwide. We hypothesize that the rectal cancer (RC) rate in young people has increased in rural Appalachia. The goal is to provide insight into the future of RC epidemiology in underserved populations. This Institutional Review Board-approved retrospective study evaluated RC patients diagnosed in 2003 to 2016, and compared the ratio of early-onset RC to the state and national ratios using West Virginia State Cancer Registry, North American Assoc

The National Exposure Registry (NER) was created as a comprehensive group of data repositories that sought, over time, to relate specific environmental exposures to dioxin, trichloroethylene (TCE), benzene, and trichloroethane (TCA) to registrants' health conditions. Some parts of the NER were well conceived, whereas others were not. The most important design deficiency of the NER was its inability to adequately assess exposure. This was the key missing element and the Achilles heel of the NER program. At least three other important issues were never satisfactorily resolved in the design of th

In Nepal, while no population based cancer registry program exists to assess the incidence, prevalence, morbidity and mortality of cancer, at the national level a number of hospital based cancer registries are cooperating to provide relevant data. Seven major cancer diagnosis and treatment hospitals are involved, including the BP Koirala Memorial Cancer hospital, supported by WHO-Nepal since 2003. The present retrospective analysis of cancer patients of all age groups was conducted to assess the frequencies of different types of cancer presenting from January 1st to December 31st 2012. A total

Histological classification of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) has become increasingly important for clinical management. We identified 295483 RCC diagnosed from 1998-2014 in the National Cancer Database (NCDB) to examine temporal trends in proportions of RCC with unspecified histology and several specific histologies from the 1998 and 2004 World Health Organization classifications of RCC. Further, multivariable log binomial analysis of 101062 RCC diagnosed from 2010 to 2014 was used to determine whether the association of diagnosing/treating facility type and the proportion of unspecified RCC is i

Cervical cancer is on the declining trend in India according to the population-based registries; yet it continues to be a major public health problem for women in India. Multifactorial causation, potential for prevention, and the sheer threat it poses make cervical cancer an important disease for in-depth studies, as has been attempted by this paper. This paper attempts to review the available knowledge regarding the epidemiology and pattern of cervical cancer; types of HPV (human papilloma virus) prevalent among cervical cancer patients and among women in general, high-risk groups such as com

BACKGROUND: A modeling method was developed to estimate recurrence-free survival using cancer registry survival data. This study aims to validate the modeled recurrence-free survival against "gold-standard" estimates from data collected by the National Program of Cancer Registries (NPCR) Patient-Centered Outcomes Research (PCOR) project.
METHODS: We compared 5-year metastatic recurrence-free survival using modeling and empirical estimates from the PCOR project that collected disease-free status, tumor progression and recurrence for colorectal and female breast cancer cases diagnosed in 2011 i…

Cancer cases are rising in India. However, despite attempts to make cancer a notifiable disease, the Ministry of Health in India has resisted this. Their reasoning is that cancer is not a communicable disease and does not have community spread. We highlight flaws in the logic of this argument and highlight how a legal mandate to report cases would give impetus to the decades-old National Cancer Registry Program. Robust record keeping would allow real-time epidemiological analysis and highlight those areas where priority could be given to both prevent and treat cancer.
