Neonatal Conjunctivitis Leading to Neonatal Sepsis--A Case Report.

Neonatal conjunctivitis is the most common occular disease in neonates. Most infections are acquired during vaginal delivery. In spite most of these cases are benign; some of them may progress to systemic complications like loss of vision if left untreated. The authors present a case of a newborn who developed late onset neonatal sepsis from E. coli positive conjunctivitis. The baby was treated with Injection Meropenem and Injection Amikacin for 10 days. The course was uneventful, after that baby responded well and discharged home on 24th day.

Incidence of Retinopathy of Prematurity in Neonates with Neonatal Sepsis.

BACKGROUND: One of the most important complications of premature birth is retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Sepsis may increase the incidence of this complication. The aim of this study is to compare the incidence of ROP in neonates with and without sepsis. METHODS: In a retrospective case-control study, preterm infants admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) of Ghaem hospital from 2014 to 2022 were examined. The case group consisted of 155 preterm infants with definite sepsis (positive blood culture and clinical signs of sepsis) and the control group included 145 preterm infants

Neonatal pneumococcal sepsis in association with fatal maternal pneumococcal sepsis.

A live male infant was born at 37 weeks' gestation after a normal pregnancy to a 34-year-old mother. The baby developed bacteraemia with Streptococcus pneumoniae and recovered completely following treatment with antibiotics. The mother simultaneously developed bacteraemia with the same organism and died from septic shock. Blood culture isolates from mother and child were both serogroup 23F, and were shown to be identical by DNA fingerprinting. The literature reports rare cases of vaginal carriage and/or endometritis with this organism resulting in neonatal sepsis. Transmission to the neonate m

Neonatal Sepsis: Mortality and Morbidity in Neonatal Sepsis due to Multidrug-Resistant (MDR) Organisms: Part 1.

The major causes of emergence of multidrug-resistant organisms (MDRO) in neonatal sepsis include empiric antibiotic prescriptions, unregulated use of over-the-counter drugs, high incidence of healthcare associated infections (HAI), lack of awareness about antibiotic stewardship program and under staffing of neonatal intensive care units. In general, mortality due to MDRO sepsis is significantly higher as compared to non MDRO sepsis. Reported morbidities include prolonged use of total parenteral nutrition, need for central venous catheter, invasive ventilation, increased duration of hospital st

Gut microbiome dysbiosis in neonatal sepsis.

Sepsis is a highly heterogeneous, life-threatening organ dysfunction primarily caused by a dysregulated immune response to counter bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, resulting in haemodynamic changes and significant morbidity and mortality across all ages. In recent times, it has become one of the foremost causes of morbidity and mortality among newborns globally. The neonates, particularly the preterm neonates, due to their immature immune systems and non-canonical microbial community acquisition in the gastrointestinal tract and other body habitats, are adversely affected compared to th

Toll-like receptors in neonatal sepsis.

UNLABELLED: Toll-like receptors are vital transmembrane receptors that initiate the innate immune response to many micro-organisms. The discovery of these receptors has improved our understanding of host-pathogen interactions, and these receptors play an important role in the pathogenesis of multiple neonatal conditions such as sepsis and brain injury. Toll-like receptors, especially TLRs 2 and 4, are associated with necrotizing enterocolitis, periventricular leukomalacia and sepsis. CONCLUSION: Toll-like receptor modulation may potentially be used as immunomodulators in the management of neo

Neonatal sepsis and meningitis in Haiti.

The aim of the study was to determine the etiology of meningitis and sepsis in the newborn at the State University Hospital of Haiti and evaluate the susceptibility 'in vitro' of the pathogens to the antibiotics commonly used. This was a prospective case series study over a 10-month period (May 1997-February 1998) of 42 newborns with sepsis and/or meningitis. Besides the clinical signs, a positive blood culture and/or a positive culture of cerebrospinal fluid was present in each case. Gram-negative bacteria were most commonly found as a cause of early onset sepsis, with Enterobacter aerogenes

[Initial antibiotic therapy of neonatal sepsis].

It is certain that in the past the types of bacterial agents responsible for neonatal sepsis and their sensitivity to antibiotics were not the same in all historical periods. However, the reports confirming the conclusion have been published only in the last three years. According to these facts, the bacterial causes of neonatal sepsis were analyzed in patients treated at the University children's hospital in Belgrade (S&M) as well as their sensitivity to antibiotics to determine the most effective initial therapy. Between January 2001 and June 2004, 35 neonates, aged from 1-30 days, with posi

[Neonatal sepsis and perinatal risk factors].

Numerous studies have identified perinatal risk factors of neonatal sepsis. Some authors have attempted to develop a score system and have shown that babies with septicemia usually had a significantly higher score than healthy newborns and infants with other diseases. The aim of our study is to verify the validity of a scoring method based on the following items: maternal disease; e.g. diabetes, severe toxemia, infection; rupture of the membranes more than 24 hours before the delivery; foul-smelling amniotic fluid; complicated delivery; Apgar score less than 7; umbilical catheterization; respi

Insight Into Neonatal Sepsis: An Overview.

There are approximately 1.3 million cases of neonatal sepsis reported worldwide with deaths occurring more commonly in preterm and low-weight newborns. Neonatal sepsis is the third major cause of neonatal deaths resulting in 203,000 deaths per year. It is divided into two subtypes based on time of occurrence: early-onset neonatal sepsis (ENS), occurring within the first 72 hours of birth usually due to perinatal risk factors, and late-onset neonatal sepsis (LOS) usually occurring after the first week of life and up to 28th day of life. There are many complications associated with neonatal seps

Infections in the NICU: Neonatal sepsis.

Neonatal infections remain an important cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. Neonatal sepsis is a systemic infection that can be classified as early-onset or late-onset pending the timing of presentation. The pathophysiology and causative pathogens of neonatal sepsis vary, with early-onset sepsis being associated with a vertically transmitted infection from mother to neonate versus late onset sepsis being commonly associated with nosocomial infections. The signs and symptoms of neonatal sepsis mimic those associated with prematurity, making timely diagnosis difficult for treati

Neonatal sepsis: within and beyond China.

Sepsis remains a significant cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality in China. A better understanding of neonatal sepsis in China as compared with other industrialized and non-industrialized countries may help optimize neonatal health care both regionally and globally. Literature cited in this review was retrieved from PubMed using the keywords "neonatal sepsis," "early-onset (EOS)" and "late-onset (LOS)" in English, with the focus set on population-based studies. This review provides an updated summary regarding the epidemiology, pathogen profile, infectious work-up, and empirical treatment

[Early neonatal sepsis and associated factors].

BACKGROUND: Early-onset neonatal sepsis (EONS) is an infectious disease of low incidence but high morbidity and mortality with severe consequences to the newborn prognosis. Identifying the associated factors related to EONS allows to start a timely treatment and to take preventive measures. METHODS: In this case and controls study we identified all the newborns (NB) with and without EONS (cases and controls), diagnosed through blood culture in a period of three years. We studied risk factors such as: low gestational age, gender, weight, maternal infections, and premature rupture of membranes.

Neonatal sepsis: progress towards improved outcomes.

Neonates are predisposed to infections during the perinatal period due to multiple exposures and a relatively compromised immune system. The burden of disease attributed to neonatal infections varies by geographic region and maternal and neonatal risk factors. Worldwide, it is estimated that more than 1.4 million neonatal deaths annually are the consequence of invasive infections. Risk factors for early-onset neonatal sepsis (EOS) include prematurity, immunologic immaturity, maternal Group B streptococcal colonization, prolonged rupture of membranes, and maternal intra-amniotic infection.
