Complete regression of melanoma associated with vitiligo.

A 53-year-old woman presented with vitiligo. A pigmented lesion was disclosed in the physical examination. Its histopathologic study showed the presence of a band of melanophages in an uneven distribution. Fibroplasia and telangiectasias were also observed, but neither nevus nor melanoma cells were found. A short time afterwards, the patient developed a metastasis in an inguinal lymph node. In spite of high-dose interferon treatment, the patient died two years after the diagnosis. This case associates two uncommon events: a) the whole regression of a melanoma and b) vitiligo associated with me

SPONTANEOUS REGRESSION OF RETINAL RACEMOSE HEMANGIOMA IN A PEDIATRIC PATIENT.

PURPOSE: To report spontaneous regression of a type 2 retinal racemose hemangioma in a pediatric patient during 6 months of follow-up without treatment. METHODS: Observational case report. RESULTS: A 12-year-old girl was diagnosed with unilateral type 2 retinal racemose hemangioma in the right posterior pole, confirmed on fluorescein angiography. After 6 months of observation without treatment, repeat examination and fluorescein angiography demonstrated regression of the arteriovenous malformation, without evidence of vascular occlusion or macular edema. CONCLUSION: Retinal racemose hemangi

Granular Cell Tumor of the Eustachian Tube: A Case Report.

Granular cell tumor (GCT), first described by Abrikosoff in 1926, is an uncommon neoplasm arising from Schwann cells. GCTs can occur in any part of the body and appear as gray-white or yellow lesions of variable size. The nasopharynx is an uncommon site of presentation, with only one other case reported. We present the first documented case to our knowledge of a GCT that exhibited complete spontaneous regression over a 13-year follow-up.

Spontaneous regression in mature T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

INTRODUCTION: Spontaneous regression (SR) is observed in some patients with mature T-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (MTCL), including adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), although the incidence is rare. AREA COVERED: We extracted 31 cases with MTCL who experienced SR based on a literature search and summarized the patient characteristics and clinical outcomes. EXPERT OPINION: MTCL with SR included various subtypes, the most common being ATL (n = 17). Five of 24 cases (21%) maintained SR for more than 5 years, and the median duration of SR was 2 years. Sixteen of 31 cases (52%) experienced tumor

Spontaneous Regression of a Third Ventricle Colloid Cyst.

BACKGROUND: Colloid cysts represent 0.5%-1% of intracranial tumors and most commonly occur in the third ventricle near the Monro foramen. Although benign, if the lesion obstructs the foramen abruptly, sudden death may ensue. Evolution of these cysts is poorly understood. Spontaneous regression has been reported in only 2 other cases. Management of such cysts depends on whether the cyst continues to grow, its location, and clinical presentation. Incidental asymptomatic colloid cysts are typically followed with neuroimaging surveillance. CASE DESCRIPTION: We present a case of an incidental thir

Spontaneous regression of colorectal liver metastasis.

A 72-year-old woman with advanced ascending colon cancer and an intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the pancreatic head was treated by right hemicolectomy (RHC) and pylorus-preserving pancreaticoduodenectomy (PpPD). Adjuvant chemotherapy was not administered. Multimodal examinations at 5 months after surgery detected a solitary metastatic liver tumor derived from cancer of the ascending colon. Liver resection proceeded at 7 months after the first surgery. A pathological study of a surgical specimen of the liver identified a necrotic nodule that did not contain viable tumor cells.

Rapidly involuting congenital hemangioma (RICH): a brief case report.

Congenital hemangiomas (CH) are benign vascular neoplasms that proliferate in utero and have completed development by birth. Two subtypes of CH are recognized: rapidly involuting congenital hemangiomas (RICH) and non-involuting congenital hemangiomas (NICH). Involution of the RICH subtype often begins in the first weeks of life. NICH does not involute, allowing the distinction between RICH and NICH. We report a case of an infant with RICH occurring on the scalp, examined at birth and followed for 26 weeks.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the tongue: report of an unusual case in a teenage patient.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor is a rare and distinctive lesion composed of myofibroblastic cells accompanied by an inflammatory infiltration of plasma cells, lymphocytes, and eosinophils that mainly affects viscera and soft tissues of children and young adults. It clinically manifests as a mass with rapid development that may occur at almost any site of the body, but predominantly in the lungs or the upper respiratory tract. It rarely arises in the oral cavity with approximately 15 cases reported in that location. We describe a case of an inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the tongue,

Spontaneous regression of Merkel cell carcinoma of the nose.

BACKGROUND: Merkel Cell Carcinoma (MCC) is a rare neurendocrine tumor of cutaneous origin. METHODS AND RESULTS: A 79-year-old woman was seen with a neck lump and a lesion in the left nasal vestibule. Biopsy of the lesion revealed a primary neurendocrine MCC of the skin of the nasal vestibule with metastases to the cervical lymph nodes. The patient decided against any further active treatment. Follow-up of patient for 30 months showed spontaneous regression of the lesions without any active treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Although spontaneous resolution of MCC has been described for other head neck s

[Regression in malignant melanoma. Definition, etiopathogenesis, morphology and differential diagnosis].

Malignant melanoma is a neoplasm that more often tends to undergo regression. Clinically, variation in color is perhaps the most important hallmark of primary cutaneous melanoma. The change in color to white, off-white, blue-white and gray-white is a sign of (spontaneous) regression in malignant melanoma. Histopathologically the process starts with a dense lichenoid infiltrate of lymphocytes, and ends with fibrosis and/or melanosis within a thickened papillary dermis. The dense infiltrate of lymphocytes permeates the thin melanoma and destroys the atypical melanocytes in the epidermis and the

Spontaneous regression of a rectal cancer.

A 42-year-old woman underwent a total colonoscopy due to haematochezia and weight loss. A rectal lateral spreading lesion with 2 5mm in diameter was identified and biopsies revealed villous adenoma with high-grade dysplasia. After referral to our centre, sigmoidoscopy confirmed the presence of a 25 mm lesion (NICE 3) with non-lifting sign and EUS showed a hypoechoic lesion with at least submucosal invasion and suspicious images of muscularis propria invasion - uT1/2N0. New biopsies shown the presence of adenocarcinoma. The patient was submitted to surgical anterior resection of the rectum. Int

A case of spontaneous regression of advanced colon cancer.

UNLABELLED: A case of spontaneous regression of colon cancer is reported. The patient, an 80-year-old man, was referred to hospital in January 2004. Colonoscopy revealed a type 2 tumour in the transverse colon which was diagnosed as an adenocarcinoma. A computed tomography scan also revealed a right renal tumour. Urological examination disclosed renal cell cancer. The patient subsequently refused surgical treatment and did not visit the hospital again for 6 months, during which time he received neither anticancer treatment nor any other medication. Another colonoscopy in August 2004 resulted i

[Spontaneous regression of thymoma; report of a case].

A 44-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with chest pain. Chest roentgenograms and computed tomography (CT) scan revealed an anterior mediastinal tumor and bilateral pleural effusion. However, CT scan 3 days after magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed regression of the tumor. Extended thymo-thymectomy was performed via median sternotomy. The tumor was in the right lobe of the thymus. Pathologically the tumor was diagnosed as a mixed type non-invasive thymoma, but some parts of the tumor cells were necrotic. This is the 10th case of spontaneous regression of thymoma reported in the

Angyomatous vocal polypus--a complete spontaneous regression.

The authors describe a male patient who had malignant lymphoma seven years ago which remitted with chemotherapy. Two years ago he developed dysphonia. An unilateral, pediculate smooth red lesion on the right vocal fold was later discovered. Even without benefit of medicamentosus treatment, the patient refused surgery. In a reevaluation using rigid telescopy of the larynx two years later, the lesion had disappeared, completely and spontaneously. As there are no existing publications on this topic, this case report is an alert that surgery should be recommended with extrema caution in this type

Congenital epulis of the newborn.

Two cases of Congenital Epulis of the Newborn, one treated by surgical removal, the other conservatively, are presented. In both patients the dentition erupted normally and although after five years a residual swelling remains in the patient treated conservatively, it is asymptomatic. It is suggested that the natural history of the congenital epulis is one of regression, and no treatment is required unless the lesion causes feeding or respiratory problems.
