Basal Cell Adenoma (BCA) known as monomorphic adenoma is a rare type of benign epithelial salivary neoplasm that mostly occurs in the parotid gland. Clinically BCA appears as a firm, mobile, slow-growing mass and is usually diagnosed during the histopathological examination of the resected surgical specimen. Histological differential diagnosis ranges from benign to malignant neoplasms such as pleomorphic adenoma, basal cell adenocarcinoma, adenoid cystic carcinoma and basaloid squamous cell carcinoma. The treatment of BCA is surgical excision, due to its varied prognosis with the different his

Werner's syndrome is an autosomal recessive disease characterized by juvenile cataracts, scleroderma-like skin changes, and a high incidence of neoplasms. A 57-year-old man had Werner's syndrome associated with a fibrosarcoma of the mediastinum and multiple basal cell epitheliomas. In two of these basal cell epitheliomas, since the sclerotic skin made it difficult to assess the extent of the tumor, microscopically controlled excision (Mohs' chemosurgery technique) was employed.

Basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma are three types of skin cancers. Skin cancers present as either non-invasive malignancies or invasive neoplasms. The non-invasive malignancies are referred to as carcinoma in situ; they only have cancer cells that are restricted to the epidermis and are not present as single tumor cells or independent nests of malignant cells in the underlying dermis. In contrast, invasive neoplasms demonstrate individual malignant cells or aggregates of tumor cells or both that are found in the dermis; in addition, cancer cells may also be located in

Nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn is a hamartoma that combines epidermal, follicular, sebaceous, and apocrine gland abnormalities. Classically, several types of cutaneous neoplasms have been associated with this hamartoma, with basal cell carcinoma being the most frequently described malignancy. We studied a series of 155 examples of nevus sebaceus of Jadassohn with clinicopathologic correlation. Several histopathologic changes related to the age of the patients were found. In our series, we could not identify any cases of authentic basal cell carcinoma. In contrast, several examples of primitive fo

Synchronous parotid neoplasms, especially synchronous neoplasms of two separate and histologically different types, are extremely uncommon. A review of the literature revealed that most reported cases were either a combination of two distinct benign neoplasms or a benign neoplasm and another malignant tumor. To the best of our knowledge, there has been no report of synchronous unilateral double primary carcinomas of the parotid gland. Here we report a 39-year-old woman who exhibited basal cell adenocarcinoma and mucoepidermoid carcinoma simultaneously in the left parotid gland.

Basal-cell carcinoma is a malignant epithelial neoplasm that arises from the germinative cells of the epidermis and its appendages. Various causative factors have been implicated in its pathogenesis. In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that alterations in serum zinc concentration may relate to neoplastic diseases. The objective of this study was to determine whether or not a relationship exists between abnormal serum zinc levels and basal-cell carcinomas. The data indicate that a statistically significant elevation in mean serum zinc levels is associated with this neoplasm. Th

It has long been suggested that subjects diagnosed with cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) have an excess rate of subsequent neoplasms. To provide further quantitative information on the issue, we have considered 1,780 histologically confirmed CMM diagnosed between 1974 and 1994 by the Cancer Registries of the French-speaking Swiss Cantons of Vaud and Neuchatel (760,000 inhabitants) and followed up to the end of 1994 for the occurrence of a second primary. A total of 194 neoplasms was observed vs. 111.7 expected, corresponding to a standardized incidence ratio (SIR) of 1.7 [95% confidence inte

Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome has as its hallmarks such diverse manifestations as numerous cutaneous basal cell cancers and epidermal cysts, palmar and plantar pits, keratocysts of the jaw, calcified dural folds, various skeletal anomalies, cleft lip and/or palate, and various other neoplasms or hamartomas. Inheritance is autosomal dominant. The etiology of all of the above findings appears to be a mutation in a tumor suppressor gene that also plays a role in normal embryonic development.

The transcription factor LMO2 is involved in vascular and hematopoietic development and hematolymphoid neoplasia. We have demonstrated that LMO2 is expressed nearly ubiquitously in native and neoplastic vasculature, including lymphatics. LMO2 reactivity is otherwise virtually absent in nonhematolymphoid tissues except in breast myoepithelium, prostatic basal cells, and secretory phase endometrial glands. Vasculature is LMO2- in adult and fetal heart, brain of older adults, hepatic sinusoids, and hepatocellular carcinoma. LMO2 is uniformly expressed in benign vascular and lymphatic neoplasms an

In a survey of dogs in Sydney, mastocytomas (16.1%) and histiocytomas (14.0%) were the most common in a total of 1,000 skin neoplasms. The basal cell and appendage group provided 25.5% of the neoplasms. The prevalence of the various neoplasms, the age of affected dogs, the proportion in the sexes, the common sites of occurrence and prevalence in the different breeds were broadly similar to findings in surveys in other countries, except that in the Syndeny dogs there was a greater prevalence of histiocytomas and haemangiopericytomas, a more common occurrence of histiocytomas in mature dogs, an

A patient with nodular sclerosing Hodgkin's disease and basal cell carcinoma syndrome is reported. Medulloblastoma and ovarian fibromas have already been associated with the syndrome and its coexistence with other malignant neoplasms has been described. The authors report here the first case of Hodgkin's disease with the multiple nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. The fact that the patient's mother also has the syndrome, and the maternal grandfather had Hodgkin's disease seems to indicate more than a chance association of two independent events.

Melanomas usually present as oval lesions in which the borders may be irregular. Other morphological features of melanoma include clinical asymmetry, variable color, diameter greater than 6 mm and evolving lesions. Two males whose melanoma in situ presented as linear skin lesions are described and cutaneous malignancies that may appear linear in morphology are summarized in this report. A medical literature search engine, PubMed, was used to search the following terms: cancer, cutaneous, in situ, linear, malignant, malignant melanoma, melanoma in situ, neoplasm, and skin. Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is an autosomal recessive genetic disorder of DNA repair in which the body's normal ability to repair damage caused by ultraviolet light is deficient. This leads to a 1000-fold increased risk of cutaneous and ocular neoplasms. Ocular neoplasms occurring in XP in order of frequency are squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma and melanoma. Malignant melanomas occur at an early age in patients with XP. We report a case of XP with massive orbital melanoma in an eight-year-old boy which is unique due to its amelanotic presentation confirmed histopathologically.

Samples from medullary, intraductal, tubular and adenocystic breast carcinomas were studied ultrastructurally, with emphasis on the patterns of myoepithelial differentiation and basal lamina deposition. Myoepithelial cells, while prominent in the intraductal and adenocystic carcinomas, were rarely found in the medullary neoplasms and appeared absent in the tubular neoplasms. Parallel to the above, basal laminae were most abundant and evenly deposited in the intraductal and adenocystic tumors, but were infrequent in the medullary tumors and seemingly absent in the tubular carcinomas. BACKGROUND: Although squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common burn scar neoplasm, other neoplasms have also been reported.
OBJECTIVE: To compile the burn scar neoplasm cases in the literature and to analyze their frequency and demographic characteristics.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Cases were obtained through literature searches.
RESULTS: There were 412 cases gleaned from 146 articles between 1923 and 2004. Seventy-one percent (293) of the tumors were squamous cell carcinoma, 12% (48) were basal cell carcinoma (BCC), 6% (23) were melanoma, 5% (21) were sarcoma, 4% (16) were other neopla

Development of skin neoplasms is the most important complication of radiation therapy. There are contradictive reports about the type of these neoplasms. Squamous cell carcinomas are considered the most frequent tumors arising on chronic radiodermatitis areas, but recent studies have demonstrated that the type of neoplasm occurring in response to ionizing radiation exposure depends on several factors. Herein we report a patient who had received low-dose radiation for the treatment of tinea capitis and developed multiple basal cell carcinomas in the radiated areas after a long latent period of

Basal cell adenocarcinoma is a recently defined category of salivary gland neoplasms. As the terminology implies, this group of tumors has many histopathologic features that are similar to the more well-known basal cell adenomas. To better characterize these tumors, 23 basal cell adenocarcinomas were reviewed and compared with 11 basal cell adenomas with the use of light microscopic and immunohistochemical methods. Evaluation of cytokeratin, S-100 protein, glial fibrillary acidic protein, carcinoembryonic antigen, epithelial membrane antigen, smooth muscle actin, vimentin, B72.3, Ber-EP4, and

Dear Editor, Germline loss-of-function variants in SUFU (MIM*607035), a component of the Hedgehog (HH) signaling pathway, have been associated with multiple hereditary infundibulocystic basal cell carcinoma (iBCC, MIM#604451). This is a yet undefined clinicopathological entity with features that are often distinct from basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS, MIM#109400). In carriers of germline SUFU variants, basaloid neoplasms tend to arise at a later age compared with BCNS; the iBCC subtype is more frequently observed, and jaw cysts have not been reported. [...].

Brooke-Spiegler syndrome is a rare disorder, characterized by the development of skin adnexal tumors, including cylindromas, trichoepitheliomas, spiradenomas. Although these neoplasms are benign in most patients, a malignant transformation can rarely occur. Furthermore, an occasional association between cutaneous adnexal tumors and basal cell adenoma as well as adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland has been rarely described, with approximately 20 cases reported. We report a case of BSS presenting with a malignant eccrine spiradenocylindroma, in a patient with previous history of parotid basal ce

Germ cell tumors of the basal ganglia are rare neoplasms that usually present with hemiparesis or other neurological symptoms. MR and PET/CT with different tracers have demonstrated their usefulness for the correct assessment of disease. Crossed cerebellar diaschisis refers to a depression in metabolism of a cerebellar hemisphere as a result of contralateral supratentorial lesions. We present a case in which MR and PET/CT were crucial for the assessment of left basal ganglia germ cell tumors with the presence of crossed cerebellar diaschisis.
