Intrauterine Device Use: A New Frontier for Behavioral Neuroendocrinology.

Intrauterine devices (IUDs) are the most-used reversible contraceptive method for women in the world, but little is known about their potential modulation of brain function, cognition, and behavior. This is disconcerting because research on other hormonal contraceptives, especially oral contraceptives (OCs), increasingly shows that exogenous sex hormones have behavioral neuroendocrine consequences, especially for gendered cognition, including spatial skills. Effects are small and nuanced, however, partially reflecting heterogeneity. The goal of this paper is to introduce IUD use as a new front

Cardiovascular Neuroendocrinology: Emerging Role for Neurohypophyseal Hormones in Pathophysiology.

Arginine vasopressin (AVP) and oxytocin (OXY) are released by magnocellular neurosecretory cells that project to the posterior pituitary. While AVP and OXY currently receive more attention for their contributions to affiliative behavior, this mini-review discusses their roles in cardiovascular function broadly defined to include indirect effects that influence cardiovascular function. The traditional view is that neither AVP nor OXY contributes to basal cardiovascular function, although some recent studies suggest that this position might be re-evaluated. More evidence indicates that adaptatio

60 YEARS OF NEUROENDOCRINOLOGY: The hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis.

This review provides an outline of how our understanding of the neuroendocrine control of the hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal axis has evolved since the publication of Geoffrey Harris' renowned monograph in 1955. Particular attention is directed to the neurobiology underlying pulsatile GnRH release from the hypothalamus, the neuroendocrine control of ovarian cycles, puberty and seasonality of gonadal function, and to ideas that have emerged as a result of examining the relationship between growth and the reproductive axis. The review closes with i) a brief discussion of how knowledge gained as a

Pituitary Apoplexy: A Rare but Critical Emergency in Neuroendocrinology.

Pituitary apoplexy is a rare and potentially life-threatening condition resulting from a sudden hemorrhage or infarction of the pituitary gland, often within a pre-existing adenoma. This report describes the case of a 45-year-old male patient who presented with an acute onset of a severe headache, visual disturbances, and cranial nerve palsy. Laboratory investigations revealed hypopituitarism with adrenal insufficiency, and magnetic resonance imaging confirmed a hemorrhagic pituitary macroadenoma compressing the optic chiasm. Prompt initiation of corticosteroid therapy and urgent transsphenoid

Historical contributions of research on birds to behavioral neuroendocrinology.

The contributions from bird research to behavioral neuroendocrinology are enormous and wide ranging. I have selected examples that illustrate how through the twentieth century to the present day, birds as experimental models continue to play a major role. Investigations on birds were pivotal in the beginnings of endocrinology, and have laid the foundations for present day developments in neurobiology, physiological ecology and evolutionary biology of neuroendocrine systems. The extensive literature on avian behavior also provides a unique and broad base for the field in general and future prog…

Pentagastrin infusions in patients with panic disorder. II. Neuroendocrinology.

Cholecystokinin (CCK) has well-documented anxiogenic effects in animals and normal people, and panicogenic effects in patients with panic disorder, but little is known about its neuroendocrine profile. We examined neuroendocrine responses to intravenous infusions of pentagastrin, a selective CCK-B receptor agonist, in 10 patients with panic disorder and 10 normal control subjects. Pentagastrin potently activated the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, but did not release growth hormone or any of several vasoactive peptides (neurokinin A, substance P, vasoactive intestinal peptide). The

Rumination in anorexia nervosa: Cognitive-affective and neuroendocrinological aspects.

Rumination about body weight/figure as well as food is common in patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and may be a maintenance factor of the disorder. While rumination can generally be considered as a cognitive-affective process, food-related rumination may be driven primarily by a physiological response to undernutrition. In the current longitudinal study, we integrate ecological momentary assessment of rumination and affect and, as a biological marker of undernutrition, plasma leptin levels collected from 33 AN patients. At the very acute stage and again after short-term weight-restoration pa

Psychopathological sequelae of female genital mutilation and their neuroendocrinological associations.

BACKGROUND: Anecdotal evidence suggests the frequently traumatic nature of female genital mutilation (FGM). At present, systematic research on the psychological sequelae of this tradition has remained limited. The study provides preliminary, high-quality psychodiagnostic data on potential psychopathological consequences of FGM, with a focus on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), shutdown dissociation and other stress-related variables. METHODS: We investigated a convenience sample of N = 167 women, supported by the women's affairs headquarters in Jijiga (capital of the Ethiopian Somali Regi

Neuroethological studies of these teleosts have now integrated a behavioral neuroendocrinology approach that has provided several examples of how hormone-sensitive neurobiological traits contribute to adaptive behavioral plasticity in natural habitats. As such, these studies provide guideposts for comparable studies in other groups of teleost …

Neuroendocrinology of aging: the potential of gene therapy as an interventive strategy.

OBJECTIVE: This paper reviews the current status of gene therapy in the neuroendocrine system and discusses the interventive potential of this methodology for neuroendocrine pathologies associated with aging. BACKGROUND AND RESULTS: A brief description is first presented of the viral-vector-based gene delivery systems being currently used in the neuroendocrine system, namely the adenoviral and herpetic (HSV1) vector systems. Next, an account of the neuroendocrine pathologies for which gene therapy approaches in animal models are being implemented is provided. This includes the treatment of ex

Neuroendocrinological aspects of histiocytosis X of the central nervous system.

Detailed neuroendocrine studies were carried out in a patient with histiocytosis X involving the hypothalamus. She presented with amenorrhea, galactorrhea, and diabetes insipidus. The diagnosis was established through needle biopsy with the aid of a computerized tomography (CT) scanner. The basic pathology and clinical features of the disease are outlined, with particular emphasis on the endocrine abnormalities seen in isolated hypothalamic histiocytosis X.

Roles of traditional chinese medicine regulating neuroendocrinology on AD treatment.

The incidence of sporadic Alzheimer's disease (AD) is increasing in recent years. Studies have shown that in addition to some genetic abnormalities, the majority of AD patients has a history of long-term exposure to risk factors. Neuroendocrine related risk factors have been proved to be strongly associated with AD. Long-term hormone disorder can have a direct detrimental effect on the brain by producing an AD-like pathology and result in cognitive decline by impairing neuronal metabolism, plasticity and survival. Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) may regulate the complex process of endocrine

Infundibulo-tuberal syndrome: the origins of clinical neuroendocrinology in France.

The birth of clinical neuroendocrinology can be dated to the year 1900, when the French neurologist Joseph Babinski (1857-1932) described a particular syndrome of adiposity and sexual infantilism in an adolescent with a craniopharyngioma expanding at the base of the brain. This condition of adipose-genital dystrophy, also known as Babinski-Fröhlich syndrome, represented the first clinical evidence that the brain controlled endocrine functions. Adipose-genital dystrophy forms part of infundibulo-tuberal syndrome, which groups the endocrine, metabolic and behavioral disturbances caused by lesion…

Developmental, sexual and reproductive neuroendocrinology: historical, clinical and ethical considerations.

Different milestones have marked the development of the field of neuroendocrinology. This is an essay in which a new direction is proposed; one in which the field is marked more by a concern for ethical considerations than experimental procedures. Among the primary concerns is the need for a national registry for intersex and transsexual cases to follow how they are managed and to assess the long-term results. As in Europe, the data in the registries should be available to qualified and certified researchers and clinicians for analysis. A secondary focus is on the surgery often imposed in case…

The student surgeon: a behavioral neuroendocrinology laboratory exercise in rats.

This article describes a two-part laboratory module taught at Wheaton College and provides resources to allow instructors to recreate this module at their own institutions. This module introduces students to basic surgical techniques and allows for in-depth discussion of 1) effects of hormones on behavior, 2) ethics of animal use in research, 3) psychopharmacology, 4) experimental design and 5) empirical data collection. This exercise provides students with the opportunity to replicate a classic behavioral neuroendocrinology study while developing critical thinking, experimental design and emp…

Löfgren Syndrome with Hypercalcemia and Neuroendocrinological Involvement: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Sarcoidosis is a systemic inflammatory disease of unknown etiology that can affect virtually any organ. Löfgren syndrome, characterized by erythema nodosum, hilar lymphadenopathy, fever and polyarthritis, represents only 20-30% of the cases of sarcoidosis. Only 2- 10% of the cases feature hypercalcemia. CASE: The case of a 42-year-old Hispanic woman with a history of erythema nodosum and three weeks of nausea, emesis, constipation, asthenia, adynamia, polydipsia, and somnolence, concomitant with hypercalcemia, but normal parathyroid hormone (PTH) and 25-hydroxyvitamin D has been p

Neuroendocrinological and neuropsychological correlates of dopaminergic function in nicotine dependence.

RATIONALE: There is multiple evidence that nicotine--as with ethanol and other drugs of abuse--stimulates dopamine release in the ventral striatum as a central part of the brain reward circuits. Chronic nicotine exposure leads to changes in these dopaminergic reward circuits. During nicotine withdrawal, an impaired dopaminergic function has been reported. On the behavioral level, this seems to result in motivational disturbances in abstaining smokers. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the impact of smoking on dopaminergic function in humans both on a neuroendocrinological and on a neuropsychological
