A case of an incidentally detected blue nevus of endocervix is presented. The nevus cells contained premelanosome and melanosomes. Pinocytotic activity, and interrupted basal lamina were disclosed by electron microscopic study. The histogenesis of these nevus cells from perineurial cells is discussed.

A case of blue naevus of the endocervix is reported with immunohistochemical and ultrastructural findings. The dendritic melanin-containing cells are analogous to the blue naevi cells of the skin. Electron microscopy showed melanosomes in dendritic cells but no cells with melanin-producing Schwann cells features were observed. Histogenetic hypotheses are discussed.

The clinical, gross pathologic, and light and electron microscopic features of three blue nevi of the endocervix were studied. Immunocytochemical studies for the localization of S-100 protein in the blue nevus cells were performed. A comprehensive review of 47 previously published cases is also presented. BACKGROUND: Blue nevus is an interesting finding, which aetiology and risk of locoregional and distant metastasis have not yet been fully clarified. It may be inherited or acquired, with sporadic cases usually presented as solitary lesions. It is often localised in the area of the head and less often on the arms, legs or trunk. Large plaque-type blue nevi with subcutaneous cellular nodules are rare tumors occurring on the trunk with deep extension into underlying soft tissues. The histopathologic appearance consists of deep nodules resembling cellular blue nevi with interspersed foci of common blue nevus. Nevus is a congenital pigmented malformation rarely found in the oral mucosa. Around one third of cases located in this anatomical region are of the blue type, a histological variant with considerable tendency to malignancy. This study reports the case of a male patient, chronic smoker, with a blue nevus measuring 5 cm in diameter on the hard palate. Blue nevus and its variants typically present as pigmented lesions. Dermal melanin is responsible for coloration and is an expected histologic finding. Herein, we report 20 cases of an unusual amelanotic variant of cellular blue nevus. Our series showed clinical demographics similar to pigmented counterparts. Benign stromal proliferations of pigmented melanocytes or blue nevi have been documented in several extracutaneous sites, such as uterine cervix, prostate, and lymph nodes. We report a 54-year-old male with melanocytic pigmentation of the adventitia of the ascending aorta. This would appear to be the first documentation of stromal melanocytosis (or "blue nevus") of the aorta.

A 54-year-old female patient was referred to the oral surgery department of a public university with a complaint of a dark spot on the palate that had been present for eight months. Clinical examination revealed a well-circumscribed, darkly pigmented macule measuring approximately 1.5 cm × 1 cm located in the posterior hard palate. A 64-year-old, nondiabetic, nonhypertensive Indian woman was admitted to our hospital for evaluation of lethargy that had been present for the past 10 months. In addition, she had developed multiple, gradually progressive, bluish nodules scattered over the skin and mucous membranes for the preceding 15 years. There was no history of recent weight loss, vomiting of blood, passing of bloody stool, or any other external bleeding. There was no significant family history and medical and surgical history was noncontributory. She had received iron preparations repeatedly in the past.
