Community Pharmacy-Based Blood Pressure Screening in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada for World Hypertension Day 2022: A Cross-Sectional Study.

BACKGROUND: High blood pressure (BP) is a leading cause of cardiovascular and stroke-related events. Office-based BP measurement has declined in recent years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which may have resulted in higher rates of undetected and uncontrolled hypertension. To gain a better idea of adult BP levels in Newfoundland and Labrador, we engaged community pharmacists in BP screening on World Hypertension Day. METHODS: Data collection and BP screening occurred on May 17, 2022. Pharmacists and pharmacy students collected 3 seated BP readings from participants, using an automated device. …

Suboptimal Adherence to Hereditary Cancer Risk Management Guidelines: A Cohort Study of High-Risk Individuals in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Hereditary cancer syndromes (HCSs), including BRCA 1/2-associated hereditary breast and ovarian cancer (HBOC) and Lynch syndrome (LS), confer substantial lifetime cancer risks, yet adherence to recommended risk-management strategies remains variable. This population-based retrospective cohort study examined cancer prevention practices, outcomes, and predictors of cancer occurrence among 476 BRCA and LS carriers identified through the Provincial Medical Genetics Program in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada (2001-2022). Linked genetic, surgical, screening, and cancer registry data were evaluated…

Pandemic Patterns: The Long-Term Health Outcomes of 1918 Influenza Survivors in the St. John's General Hospital of Newfoundland and Labrador.

OBJECTIVES: Research surrounding the 1918 influenza pandemic has primarily been a story of mortality despite theoretical and practical reasons to focus on the pandemic's long-term impacts. We investigate survivorship among individuals who were hospitalized with influenza and pneumonia (P&I) before and during the 1918 flu to explore morbidity and understand the effects of viral pandemic illness on long-term individual health. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We synthesize a novel dataset of hospitalization records from St. John's General Hospital in Newfoundland & Labrador with vital records to calculat

A single-case foodborne botulism outbreak caused by Clostridium botulinum type A1(B5) in diced garlic in Newfoundland and Labrador, 2024.

Foodborne botulism is a severe neuroparalytic disease caused by ingestion of foods containing botulinum neurotoxins, produced by Clostridium botulinum. In 2024, a 74-year-old woman from Newfoundland and Labrador with complete bilateral flaccid paralysis and respiratory distress was hospitalized and required intubation. From the broader differential diagnosis list, botulism was favoured prior to laboratory confirmation. Serum and feces samples initially tested negative for botulinum neurotoxins by mouse bioassay, yet viable C. botulinum type A was recovered from the feces. Food history investig…

Delayed diagnosis and issues with pump usage are the leading causes of diabetic ketoacidosis in children with diabetes living in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) has a very high incidence of type 1 diabetes (T1DM) and admission rate for diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). The purpose of this study was to identify characteristics and precipitating factors associated with pediatric DKA in this population. METHODS: This was a retrospective study on children diagnosed with DKA from 2007-2011 admitted to the province's only tertiary care pediatric hospital. Demographics, biochemical characteristics, and reasons for DKA diagnosis were analyzed. Chi-square and Fisher Exact tests were performed for categorical variables; t-…

Serological Evaluation of Human Antibodies of the Immunoglobulin Class A and G Against SARS-CoV-2 in Serum Collected in Newfoundland and Labrador.

The ability to detect antibodies to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is currently under investigation with various performance characteristics and indications for use. In this article, we analyzed the ability of the Abbott SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin class G (IgG), EuroImmun SARS-CoV-2 enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) IgG, and EuroImmun SARS-CoV-2 ELISA immunoglobulin class A (IgA) kits to detect evidence of previous infection with SARS-CoV-2. We tested 49 known coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) patients and 111 prepandemic stored serology specimens. This res

Translation of research discoveries to clinical care in arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy in Newfoundland and Labrador: lessons for health policy in genetic disease.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, a lethal autosomal dominant cause of sudden cardiac death in young people, is prevalent in Newfoundland and Labrador (genetic subtype ARVD5). In the absence of implantable cardioverter defibrillator treatment, death rates are extremely high. Research into arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVD5) began in the 1980s and the causative gene and mutation were discovered in 2008. The decades of research highlighted major issues associated with the ethical management of genetic information and the translation of research findings to clin…

Self-reported impact of the sugar-sweetened beverage tax on consumer attitudes among adults in Newfoundland and Labrador: A comparison with other Canadian provinces in 2021 and 2022.

OBJECTIVES: Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) became the first Canadian jurisdiction to implement a sugar-sweetened beverage (SSB) excise tax in September 2022. This study examined self-reported consumer perceptions and behaviours in Canada pre- and post-implementation. METHODS: Pre-post data were from national repeat cross-sectional surveys with Canadian adults aged 18-100 years (2021-2022). The sample included 8709 participants over the 2 years, including 813 from NL. Adjusted logistic regression models examined differences by region and year in self-reported SSB: (1) tax awareness; (2) percei…

Association of total energy intake and macronutrient consumption with colorectal cancer risk: results from a large population-based case-control study in Newfoundland and Labrador and Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: Diet is regarded as one of the most important environmental factors associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) risk. A recent report comprehensively concluded that total energy intake does not have a simple relationship with CRC risk, and that the data were inconsistent for carbohydrate, cholesterol and protein. The objective of this study was to identify the associations of CRC risk with dietary intakes of total energy, protein, fat, carbohydrate, fiber, and alcohol using data from a large case-control study conducted in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) and Ontario (ON), Canada. Promoting health by empowering women, strengthening partnerships, and enhancing health care systems: one Pap test at a time.

Invasive cervical cancer, a highly preventable disease, is the thirteenth most common form of cancer among Canadian women and third amongst those women 20 to 40 years of age (Public Health Agency of Canada [PHAC], 2009). Health care providers (HCP)s know that adherence to the Canadian recommendations for regular screening, using the Pap test, reduces incidence and mortality rates (Marcus & Crane, 1998). Yet, only 30% of women in Newfoundland and Labrador consistently participate in cervical screening (Newfoundland and Labrador CHI, 2006) and mortality rates are alarming. The most recent data r…

Hereditary diseases as causes of blindness in Newfoundland: preliminary report.

Hereditary disease appeared to account for more cases of registered blindness in Newfoundland and Labrador than indicated by the statistics of the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. The files of all 1013 people registered as of Dec. 31, 1981 were therefore reviewed, many persons were interviewed and examined, and pedigrees were researched. In 14.6% of cases either the diagnostic or the etiologic code had to be revised. The largest etiologic category was "genetic, established", which accounted for 24.0% of the cases registered. When cases of blindness presumed to be of genetic origin or…

Origins of the rabies viruses associated with an outbreak in Newfoundland during 2002-2003.

After being free of rabies of terrestrial mammals since 1988, an outbreak of rabies occurred on the Island of Newfoundland in December 2002 and continued into the middle of 2003. Twenty-one cases, all due to the arctic fox strain of rabies virus, were reported. To explore the immediate origins of this outbreak, viruses from the Newfoundland epizootic were genetically compared to two other rabies viruses recovered in mid-2002 from Cartwright, a mainland coastal community near the Island. While all Island isolates from the 2002-03 outbreak were genetically very similar, consistent with a single

Skewed distribution of hypothyroidism in the coastal communities of Newfoundland, Canada.

Several studies published in the recent past have shown that rising levels of thyroid disrupting chemicals (TDCs) in the environment affect … howing the regional distribution of hypothyroidism cases. We collected administrative data from the Newfoundland and Labrador Centre for Health Information on hospitalizations with hypothyroidism (from 1998 to 2012) in 41 coastal communities of Newfoundland and found that mean hypothyroidism rates of west and south coasts were significantly higher than in the east coast (1 …

Frustrations in delivering a dental service to the north coast of Labrador.

The delivery of a dental service to 4,000 people by 2-3 dentists, appears straight forward, in theory. It proves to be a different story in reality. Having prior knowledge of these problems, may be of help to dentists who wish to work here. One must experience the situation for oneself, however. There are certainly a "more than normal" amount of problems to confront on a daily basis. Accommodation and travel arrangements, seem to be the most pressing issues which need improvement. The usual work span of a dentist is between one and three years. The amount of work done by each dentist can vary

Melanocortin 1 receptor variation in the domestic dog.

The melanocortin 1 receptor (Mc1r) is encoded by the Extension locus in many different mammals, where a loss-of-function causes exclusive production of red/yellow pheomelanin, and a constitutively activating mutation causes exclusive production of black/brown eumelanin. In the domestic dog, breeds with a wild-type E allele, e. g., the Doberman, can produce either pigment type, whereas breeds with the e allele, e.g., the Golden Retriever, produce exclusively yellow pigment. However, a black coat color in the Newfoundland and similar breeds is thought to be caused by an unusual allele of Agouti,

Impacts of tropical cyclones on Northwest Atlantic seabirds: insights from a Category 1 hurricane.

Tropical cyclones are annual occurrences in the western North Atlantic Ocean, where many seabird species are vulnerable to the environmental factors associated with extreme weather events. We summarize the history of tropical cyclones in Newfoundland, Canada, which hosts globally significant populations of seabirds. We examine the interactions that historical tropical cyclones have had with breeding seabirds by plotting the temporal association of Category 1 hurricanes with the breeding phenology of colonial seabirds in Newfoundland and identifying which major colonies have fallen within the p
